Rated 5 out of 5 by from No more brush piles After looking at what was on the market, I decided to go with the CJ603E. I have to say I'm impressed. Here in the Northeast we have plenty of rock maple, oak, and pine that's constantly shedding branches. Add the branches that need to be pruned, and it adds up quickly. Assembly was easy, with only the two legs and the axle to be installed. It is pretty stable and easy to move. It was up and running in 10 minutes. I removed the cover plate and looked over the cutting mechanism. The "star wheel" cutter looks to be forged, and it is keyed to the gear box output shaft with a slide fit, so replacement or sharpening looks to be pretty easy. The aluminum counter plate has a steel hinge pin and looks good and beefy. I buttoned it back up and started clearing the brush pile. Understanding that the extension cord wire gauge was critical, I purchased a 12 AWG, 50 ft. cord and fired it up. The stuff I was cutting included all of the woods mentioned above and more. Most of it was dry, but some fresh cut maple branches were in the mix. It cut almost everything I fed into it. I gave it the acid test and fed a 1.5" fresh cut maple branch in. It ate most of it but finally stalled out, and I had to back the remainder out and toss it aside. It handled smaller fresh cut branches easily. Dry branches up to the opening size bogged it gown, but it ate them all. If the counter plate is set right it even cut very small twigs and dry wild grape vine. The output did clog sometimes when the odd leafy branch was fed through it, but it was easy to pull it down and into the bucket. It is not a leaf shredder, but for chopping up brush it does the job. It does tend to cut branches into 3/4" to 1 " long split chunks that will be used to mulch the flower beds. It's not a shredded mulch, but it looks ok, and it'll keep the beds looking clean. Having seen some videos where the machine bogged down on even small branches, my guess was that they used undersized extension cords. A properly sized extension cord is a must if you want to get the best performance. Last but not least, this isn't a commercial chipper, but it can cut up brush at a decent clip with no issues. Well worth the cost, and a decently powerful, trouble free machine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've used the chipper/shredder for a few hours now and... I've used the chipper/shredder for a few hours now and it has been a very useful tool for me. I'm excited that I can condense my ample amounts of yard waste considerably for use around the yard or a reduced number of trips to our town green waste facility. I didn't fully understand what this machine is before I bought it. I was imagining a high RPM device that grinds up branches akin to a big commercial chipper like the tree pros use. It is, rather, a high torque, low RPM machine, but it can handle most of what I'll be dealing with: branches less than an inch and a half in diameter. The instructions recommend letting trimmings dry/wilt for a few days. In general this works pretty well. In my first attempts some of the thinner greener sprigs (privot branches) wound around the chipping gear. There are some things that chop up well green, such as firethorn. I let some get too dry and it was difficult to get it to feed through the opening. My biggest question was adjusting the grinding gear/back plate distance. There isn't any way to get this right with the machine off as the manual directs. I'm very carefully adjusting the distance with the machine running until I hear the slight scraping. You will see metal filings. This will be counterintuitive for anyone mechanical where the object is to prevent metal-to-metal friction. But the distance has to be very close for optimum chipping, especially greener stuff. The intent of the design (I hope) is that a softer backing plate will have some give to a harder wheel and won't dull the latter. With proper understanding, the Sun Joe can be a real benefit reigning in explosive yard growth.

Is there a max length for the stick, or can it be many feet tall? I have piles of branches that are easily 5-6' tall and I'm hoping not to have to cut them down in order to use this machine. I understand the width max of 1.6", but is there a length max? Also, does the branch have to be pretty straight, or just relatively straight? Is there room for it to adjust if not perfectly straight? (like a rectangular shoot to allow movement vs a 1.6" circular shoot)
Asked by: jb
Eventually the pile of chips underneath will need to be cleared or it will jam, but it does not care how long the piece is as long as the diameter fits.

Asked by: Chandra
It will cut dried branches up to +/- 1.5" diameter. It can handle green brances as well, but in my experience leaves/pine needles, etc. will clog the output quite often.

I have been watching YouTube videos and comparing the 602 15 amp model to this 603 15 amp model. After watching the videos, this one seems to be a bit more powerful and accepts the branches better. Has anyone else noticed this as well or can Sun Joe give me their opinion on this matter? Thanks.

You can feed a decent sized Branch through it but if you hit a knot or a thick piece you're going to have to loosen the pressure plates to get it through the difference in the different machines is probably just the shape of the material coming out depending on their blade design

I wouldn’t worry if. A few got in there on the branches. But I think that acorns would probably be too hard for it to chop up

Does the machine pull sticks in on it's own power like a paper shredder or, do you have to stay at the machine and keep pushing the sticks down into the blade as it works?
Asked by: Storm
Depends. Sometimes you can put a branch in and leave it. Sometimes you have to keep pressure on for it to feed correctly.
