Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not recommended for flooring above unheated spaces On the positive side, it was easy to install and adds a bit of cushioning to the flooring. However, I gave it three stars for 2 reasons: 1) It's not as warm as we had expected based on it's advertisement. We thought it was at first but then the colder weather hit and we noticed a real difference (the room is over an unheated garage). 2) In the middle of the roll there was a damaged section about eight feet long that we had to cut out (wasting time and material in the process). I made the manufacturer aware but to no avail. Would I buy it again? Probably not for a situation such as ours where the room was above an unheated garage. It may be more suitable for a basement floor.

I am on the fence with this product due to a few quality control issues experienced. I will have to test it over the winter to see if it was worth the hassle. 1) Self Adhesive tape issues: About 1/3 of my 500 sq ft roll either didn't have the self adhesive strip or it was too far from edge to adhere to the previous run's overlap. It looked like the tape roll was swapped in the middle of my roll being produced and then broke a few times which left runs without any self adhesive tape. I ended up having to make an extra trip to buy my own seal tape.... 2) Punctured Padding: The outer part of the roll had random punctures in the top few layers and required repairing\sealing as it was rolled out. 3) The bottom reflective barrier was not properly adhered to the rest of the pad in multiple sections. This didn't cause a big issue when installing but the separation when unrolling or trimming was noticeable and a bit concerning as to the quality and ultimate efficiency of the product.

Makes each floor warm we installed (different styles of laminate vinyl aqua seal flooring) under your bare feet--you can feel the heat radiate under your feet while on the floor and makes you warm. Definitely worth the extra $ spent to have this. We have a concrete floor basement underneath with no heat down there--but you cannot feel any cold at all. Buy it--you will be glad you did.

We are putting a new ceiling in the living room. We want a sound deadening product we can put between the new ceiling and the floor of the room above. We're trying to expose beams so want a barrier that is as thin as possible while still doing the job.

Asked by: JStaples
This product should work perfectly. I am not clear on how you can have exposed beams and a full acoustic layer . Are you putting this under the flooring above or between the beams ? Good luck HC

Can I install this to the subfloor and then put 1/4" or 1/2" plywood down laying the floor?

i just bought a house with the intentions of gutting the first floor to replace all of the flooring... previous owner went the simple route (not saying it's wrong, just not my preference)... they decided to get a basic laminate flooring and just floated it over the old stuff. i have already started on the kitchen gut/expansion so this will be the perfect opportunity (at l least in my opinion) to do the flooring in a way that i would really like for as long as i decide to stay in this house. We do not wear shoes in the house, so it always sounds like a bunch of elephants are running around with the current flooring. Anyways, i apologize for all the extra details... and now back to my original question. I'm pretty sure my plan to put the plywood over the underlayment is probably overkill.... but I'm going to be putting down solid bamboo flooring for the entire first floor.... my thoughts on using the plywood would help further reduce the foot noise if i do both the underlayment and the plywood.... plus the plywood will help make the floor be even stronger (don't have subfloor problems right now, but I'm thinking this could help extend the life of the floor). i will also make sure to compensate the additional plywood height to make sure the cabinets line up properly, and won't have any problems installing the dishwasher. Any feedback pro or negative would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for taking the time to read this question!
Asked by: Bob
I would recommend you use this, rather, under the actual bamboo flooring, as it will noticeably affect the comfort of walking on the floors. I don't see why applying this between two layers of plywood subflooring would be more beneficial than laying it on top of the double subfloor. A double subfloor would be quite rigid and unlikely to create much noise. if youre still concerned about noise maybe you could adhere the two subfloor layers with both adhesive and screws.

Can this be used on top of a vapour barrier on a crawl space floor and if so which side up?

Asked by: Gary108
Yes- In fact Thermoquiet can be used as the vapor Barrier itself. In a crawl space silver side should face up to retain heat in the structure, Good Luck, HC

We will have a smooth drywall basement ceiling, which will be attached via strapping that is screwed to the joists (IE. A pretty typical set-up). Should I put this between the strapping and joists, or between the drywall and strapping?

Asked by: nrg1275
Best option is to go between the strapping and the joists - simply staple the product across the whole ceiling (every 3rd or 4th joist is fine ) so it is fairly tight and flat. Then screw your strapping straight through the Thermoquiet mat and then attach your drywall to the strapping . Good Luck, HC

Asked by: Heidi
It will be the blue side that is visible when you install it.

Can this be wrapped around hvac ducts in basement? Or is there something more practical? We live in an older home and the vents/ducts will echo with sounds due to change in temp. Thanks in advance!

Asked by: Couticus
This will work ,but can you access all sides of the ducts ? Also you would have to cut the roll down to 6 inch widths so you can actually warp the ducts with a spiral wrap. - If not and the ducts are square , I would recommend using the SilveRboard Acoustic kit sheets and cutting it to size in long strips and taping to the exterior of the ducts with Duct tape . Good Luck HC

Can this material be “glued” on the side of uninsulated garage to keep warm or cool? Thank you

Asked by: Heidi
I used it as an underlayment for tiling. The thermal insulation would be a "radiant heat shield" which is provided by a thin layer of foil. There are other products that would provide much more insulation.

Is this product good for underneath engineered hardwood in theatre rooms?  Our goal is to dampen noise

Asked by: Satkul
It certainly helps as far as dampening sound, but you'll probably still want to have some kind of an area rug on top of the floor to reduce reflection. Also, if you've got some relatively large floorstanding speakers (as I do), you may want to consider isolation pads for those to reduce vibration.
