Bought this mower (60V Toro SmartStow 22" push) to replace a 56V mower of another brand that I purchased from Home Depot five years ago. I'm including some comparisons in this review to help people who might be trying to decide which battery mower to buy from many choices now available. The old mower slowed down when it was three years old and died completely after the warranty expired. Based on frustrating service experiences with that one I looked for a different, established brand that had local service available; we have an excellent implement company in town that is an authorized Toro service center. After the first mowing, I am happy I bought this Toro. Most importantly, it mows better. Mulching is excellent. This Toro really does feel like it has the power of a gas mower--even when mulching, powered through thick grass that overloaded the old mower, and left my lawn looking better because this one cut all the grass and didn't leave some behind like the old one did. Steel deck is a mixed blessing--heavier, but sturdy and easy to clean. The deck and blade are the same ones used in their gas model, and of a superior design to more effectively lift, cut, and mulch grass. Grass did not stick and build up under the deck. I definitely worked harder pushing and pulling this one, but it's still easier than the gas mower I had borrowed to get me through, and I would not want self-propelled. The 6AH battery got me nearly all the way through my 1/3 acre lot; if I had set the cut a little higher and not mulched, or if the grass had been dryer I expect it would have got all the way through. The older mower would not have gone nearly as far on a full charge of its 5AH battery. Some aspects are not as good but I'll live with them, they aren't deal-breakers: --wheels need height adjusted individually; --handle is not padded and straight across not angled--gave me a blister (next time, will wear gloves); --fewer strategically-placed handles; --battery takes several hours to charge, the old one took less than one hour; On the other hand, --the Toro can be hosed off, and includes a hose cleanout port; --the 22" cut width is best-in-class; --it can be serviced without being sent halfway across the country, and parts are available; --build quality is excellent--simple and rugged; --okay this is frivolous, but the Toro looks like a real lawn mower, not a transformers toy. The warranty on the Toro mower is two years compared to five years of the other model (three year battery warranty for either), but at least if this mower does need service I know it can actually get fixed. A long warranty with poor service to back it up isn't worth much. Also, many of the battery mowers on the market are built to be disposable--they are cheaper to replace than fix, they are built to wear out, and end up in landfills, negating the environmental benefit of electric compared to gas. I shopped around, and as of today I believe this Toro is the best choice out there for a lawn at the larger end of the size recommended for battery mowers (1/3 acre or larger).

However, the battery run time is not sufficient for my quarter acre lot. The battery also takes up to 3 hours to recharge, even when it is still 25% full. I had another electric lawnmower that would mow my entire lawn and had charge to spare. The battery also did not take as long to charge, but it did not cut as nicely. I know Toro takes pride in the steel deck, but what is the real advantage of the added weight? Changing the deck height is also needlessly cumbersome. A separate lever for each wheel and the front & back wheels are reversed. Why?
