Rated 5 out of 5 by from First gas chainsaw We bought an electric Black & Decker chainsaw last year for basic yard maintenance. Did the job well up until we needed to cut wood for our wood stove. It became laborious and no fun as it lacked the power we needed. I had never used a gas chainsaw until I was helping a friend fall a couple trees to clear a spot for an addition to his garage. It was a huge difference! I started looking at gas saws and found the Troy Bilt and it seemed to fit what we were looking for. First use yesterday and I was buzzing through wood with ease. I know it’s new out of the box, but I am super happy with. Starts easily and I will definitely get lots of use out of it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good for the price,and very handy I bought this chainsaw last year,as my first private saw. I cut Iverson 40 trees including frozen,and wet. Cut from maple,poplar, oak,Manitoba maple 40" with no problem. I prefere it than stihl as it is less than 1/2 price and it has more power. Only problem is,that chain oil is leaking non stop. I fixed it just storing the saw on the side instead on the bottom. A lot of power,can cut using one hand ,well balanced.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Clutch slips. Exhaust leaks. Difficult hot starts. I bought the 20" model of this Troy Bilt chainsaw to deal with a few trees in my yard. I've put only about 15-20 hours on it. Overall I'm very disappointed with it. The clutch slips (so the chain stops) while cutting anything larger than 6-8", there is a massive exhaust leak between the cylinder and the muffler, and it is very hard to start when hot. Because this is a modest-priced saw my expectations were modest, but this product fails to meet those modest expectations in almost every way. Presumably it's too late to return this product to the store :-(

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very happy For the price it's a great buy.. I've been cutting a massive maple stump with it. I can run it hard for 30 minutes no problem. Then let it sit for a bit to cool down. Small poplar dropped it and cut it up no problem about 45 minutes.. Chain oil leaks alot.. So what I do is fill it as I need it. Fill it a quarter of the way use the saw keep an eye on it.. And if you need a little more just add a little bit. If you need a good chainsaw for occasional cutting without having to cut for hours at a time this is perfect.. Otherwise go spend $600 or more on top name saws.

Some difficulty at first starting it and was becoming frustrated with it. Some difficulty understanding the gas oil ratio. I did research into my issues and found the problems I was having were easy to solve. I was going to return it but I solved my issues and kept it. Learn how to start this model properly and give it rest breaks or it will shut itself off. If you push this saw it will overheat.

Does this saw need ethanol free fuel ?

Hello Ed71. The chainsaw does not require ethanol free fuel, however, it does require the ethanol amount to be less than 10%. Anything ethanol amount higher than 10% may damage the engine and void the warranty. Thank you for your question.

WRT the Troy built 16-inch 42cc gas chainsaw. Will it take any 16” universal replacement chain, or must it be by Troy built? Thanks in advance.

Thank you for your question. For safety and best performance we recommend using original equipment chain 3/8" LP Pitch; .050" Gauge; 56 drive links.Other chains can be used, Tri-Link Model # TL-S56-16 available at Home Depot Item # 1001540161 is a good choice.
