Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worked out good, durable finish. I used this for the first time to coat oak vaneer stair treads. Product is virtually odor free and applies nice. My top suggestion would be to not aggressively stir or over work the clear coat while applying. I found that there was the odd bubble appear and I could make another complete brush stroke end to end in order to get rid of the bubble. For whatever reason about half way through my 11 stair treads I had one that developed about a dozen large bubbles but it was to late to go back over it with the brush. I allowed it to dry for couple days, sanded out bubbles and applied a second coat that went on well. I used 2 coats on all treads.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Maybe for Pro painter, Not for DIYer I tried this product and there was so many brush mark. I had to sand it again and apply it for the second and third time. I returned to store and purchased the classic PU and tried with the stain pad and Nylon brush. The result was great and not comparable with TT-PE. That being said, this Product might be great for a professional painter that has expertise to use it, or maybe right tools like sprayer ,but definitely not for DIYer like me that is going to work with this finish for the first time. Maybe Hone Depot paint associates should qualify the customer and based on their level of knowledge provide them with right products. I am happy with classic PE and recommend that one to DIYers like myself.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolute Trash I bought this because it seemed to be the only matte clear available, i am usually a Watco user if i'm forced to use one of these cans. I am so angered by the performance that i signed up for an account just to leave this review. The instructions say to apply a light mist, but all that does is provide a pebbled texture which is what exactly zero percent of the population wants. Secondly it says "dries to the touch in 1 hour." 1 hour later it was still as wet as when it came out of the can. 4 hours later? still extremely tacky. Next day? Even with a thick even coat to actually get a finish someone would actually want, it was as splotchy as a rorschach test. Lesson learned. Next time i will spend the extra time and money to go down to my lacquer supplier and get a proper product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not worth the premium I thought that I would try this in "Santa's workshop" as the big day approaches. The label suggests that I could save coats (and time) but, of course, the prep was the same and it took just as many coats to get the finish I expected with this product as with any other that I have used. As this product is 50% to 100% more expensive than similar finishes, I can only suggest that the other products offer much better value.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Over priced, still needs multiple coats I bought this as I was in a time constraint and had high hopes I could only apply 1 coat. Sadly I was wrong. The first coat dried then had to be sanded smooth to get the brush strokes out of it then a 2nd and 3rd coats applied (with more sanding between coats) but at least it was more than double the price or regular Varathane (which I have used with great success) Will never buy this product again!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Blurb says it only takes one coat... Blurb says it only takes one coat. They forgot to mention the four or five hours of sanding that it would have taken if I hadn't done a test first. I tried several application methods the first of which was to follow the instructions on the can to the letter. This left me with ridges from the $30+ brush I bought based on the instructions on the can. BTW, not even close to self-levelling as the can claims. The brush left deep ridges, a roller left stippling, a foam brush left bubbles…. I returned it and bought a regular semi-gloss polyurethane (not Varathane or Rustoleum), applied it to a small test patch using a $1 foam brush in less time than it took to open the can, waited a couple of hours, gave it a light sand and a second coat. The finish turned out perfect…no ridges, streaks, stippling or bubbles…just a nice finish. Long story short, save yourself the work and just get a normal polyurethane finish.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Forget what you you knew about applying finishes Did two big projects with this stuff, pretty acceptable results, but it depends highly on application and desired finish. It really is triple thickness, which makes for a nice thick first coat, but it also means it takes 3x as much work to apply. Forget what you thought you knew about applying a finish in a single even brush stroke, this stuff NEEDS to be worked or you'll end up with an uneven finish. Problem with a triple thick polyurethane is it's also 3x thicker than you want it to be when applying! Brush marks? Yes. Foam brush, soft bristle, poly, doesn't matter. You WILL get brush marks, LESS so if you work it thinner, as a contradictory matter of fact. This stuff is also very resistant to air bubbles, which is fantastic news since you'll be brushing back and forth quite a bit, which traditionally works air into the finish. If you apply it quick enough, you should be able to run your brush across your piece in full length low pressure strokes, which will help knock down those brush marks! Final hardness is good, don't let your dog walk on your table or anything, but it holds up to normal use pretty well after it's fully cured (3 days or so). 24hrs after applying, I like to knock it down with a fine scotchbrite pad or sanding sponge. It knocks down the brush marks really well, but will dull your sheen. You could buff it after to regain some lost sheen. If you're looking for a really glossy window finish, you're probably not going to get it with this stuff unless you're planning to buff it. I'd recommend going for a single thickness poly if you want something that finishes sans brush marks and you don't want to sand. So, sample piece: Right half is the triple thick poly with matte finish. Top side is untouched after applying, lower side has been brushed with a scotchbrite pad. Note; the reflection is even on both sides, it's just that the sheen has changed. Left half is oil based poly in a satin finish. Workpiece also done in matte, has a finer finish, worked in. The brushmarks are much finer, but will disappear after a light sanding. Without a direct reflection you can't see them anyway.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not oil based as description suggests. I made the mistake of not reading the product description and going by what the title says - this is not an oil based product as the title suggests. It also never cured to a hard smooth finish as it remained soft and tacky after 24hr. Suggest using their Professional line instead.

What is the best way to get rid of the smell?

What is the best way to get rid of the smell?

In ideal conditions, Rust-Oleum Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane Spray fully cures after 7 days and after that point any solvents will have dissipated from the surface. To help with the odor, make sure the surface is an in area with proper ventilation and gently clean the surface with a mild detergent and water once the coating has cured. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Can this be applied over oil based paint or just bare/stained wood? Just finished painting my cab...

Can this be applied over oil based paint or just bare/stained wood? Just finished painting my cabinets with flat black oil based Rustoleum paint. They look great and I think they will hold up ok, but I would like the extra protection of poly if possible.
Asked by: BPMG
I have used this Varnish on all kinds of painted wood and it works fine. The trick is to wait a few days to be sure the paint is completely dry, not just to the touch but completely dry. This will avoid any bubbling of the paint from the application of the varnish. I had that happen the first time I applied to paint that was just 24 hours old.

This model #334447, in the product title and specifications says it is oil-based, however in the overview for the product it says it is water-based. Which is it? Thank you!

Hi L1G2, Our Varathane Triple Thick Interior One Coat in aerosol is oil-based in order for the product to be able to be sprayed. We hope this new information is helpful.

I’ve stained pine tough and groove and it’s on the ceiling can use this as a final coat?

Asked by: Tladouce1
I wouldn't use it on a ceiling because of the difficulty of applying a spray upwards! Better to use a product you can roll on, less splatter.

Hi, I'm thinking on this product for a Black Walnut dining table,  wondering if anyone out there have done a big piece or similar project and how was the out come, just thinking about water proofing the table a little better, any input will be great.

Asked by: Kikeper77
I used this to waterproof my dinner table. It is semi smooth as I wanted to show the big saw marks in the wood. If you want a matte clear, this is the one! I tried another matte clear to compare and the more coats I put on, the more sheen it gained! I really like this stuff and will be doing my bamboo counter tops also.
