Rated 5 out of 5 by from Watery consistency, strained paulownia with it and it came out decent. It takes quite a few coats on this particular wood if you're using a foam brush - I'd recommend a paint brush with bristles. Used for a ring box (3*3*2 in) and I barely used much. I want the grain to pop on a previously staind/sealed oak cabinet that I sanded, but I don't want blotchy results. Am I better of with a Rust Oleum oil rubbed bronze? There is a picture on the Rust Oleum oil rubbed bronze site review from dfwfoodiegeek September 30, 2014 that shows a front door that looks more like what I want, but it looks like a stain.
Asked by: Beth
Thank you for reaching out, Beth! While Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain will have a more transparent finish, it must be applied to a bare wood surface. We do not recommend it for use on previously finished wood, as it will not properly penetrate and dry. Please keep in mind, our Universal Metallic Sprays will have an opaque finish to it and not allow any grain to show through. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

I bought this product and applied on dresser, after 24 hours it is still sticky and not dry why/

Asked by: RAaa
Maybe poor ventilation? Maybe surface wasn't properly prepped? I used this on benches. Can't remember how long it took to dry but now we use them every day and they look beautiful.

Can I use this product to stain my wood floor and stairs? Any additional steps before and after I apply this product to wood floor?

Asked by: shelly
Hi Shelly, Yes, you can apply our Classic Penetrating Oil Based Wood Stain on wood floors and stairs. For unfinished wood; Begin sanding with #120 grit sandpaper and progress through #150, #180 and #220 grits. Before staining, remove all sanding dust using a rag dampened with mineral spirits, or vacuum. If a filler or putty is used, make sure that it does not contain wax and allow for enough time to dry thoroughly. Soft woods such as pine, fir and maple require a wood conditioner. Use Varathane Premium Wood Conditioner before sanding and staining. After application, you can top coat with either an oil based finish after 8 hours or a water based finish after 24 hours.

Can this product be used on an exterior cedar deck? I know what the can says, I'm seeking a professional opinion. Every exterior deck product I've used does not stand up on the flat deck surface.

Asked by: dk506
Hi dk506, This Penetrating Wood Stain will not hold up to the outdoor elements, even if you topcoat with an exterior finish. We recommend trying our Varathane Premium Gel Stain. While it is listed as an interior product; if using outdoors, you can protect the stain with an exterior oil based finish.
