Rated 4 out of 5 by from Little bit lighter than shown, but satisfied Stain is a little lighter than shown in the picture. I probably could have gotten it a bit darker by leaving it on longer, doing a second coat, or a bit heavier application, but all of those were a little more time than expected. I used this for refinishing of red oak hardwood floors which were fully stripped and sanded to 100g. That being said our floors turned out great. Ensure to mix well. Mix it longer than you think and ensure to get all of the settled solids at the bottom. I would recommend it, but a little disappointed by the lightness.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Satisfied with product Covered well with 2 coats on my unpainted chest of drawers. I left the drawer fronts unstained for a 2 toned mid century mod look.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Misleading I bought the 'weathered oak' last evening and applied it today ... it turned out nothing like the picture on the can ..... it's just plain gray!! So disappointed ... after applying several coats, I finally accepted I was duped by the misleading label on the can. I, now have to sand it off and start again with another product.... Not happy

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stain without Pain. This oil based stain is one that I've used for many outdoor home projects. It's by Verathane, a well known producer for years. I find it goes on much smoother when I use a lambswool type of pad. If you wait till the wood has weathered for a month or so then apply you'll find it has excellent weather resistance and will only require a quick seasonal touchup. Years of good looking outdoors wood.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly recommend I used this product on a table previously painted grey that I stripped. Easy to apply, easy to clean off skin. Really nice and natural finish that brings stripped wood or other surfaces to life. Very pleased with this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Looks like a bad spray tan This stain is not as pictured. Unless you want bright orange wood, I would not buy this stain.
Date published: 2020-05-05
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not as shown, not even close... Mysteriously, the label photo of the stain's color fails to reveal what "Hazelwood" is: a distinctively gray stain which couldn't be more different than the picture. Too lazy to return it (bought during Covid curbside pick-up and paid by PayPal), I'll find some other use for it.

Without sanding can this be applied over stained oak hardwood floor? If yes, is it durable?

Asked by: Joseph
This stain is durable. It can be applied overtop of existing stain without sanding it, but only if there are no other sealers on the wood, such as polyurethane. Applying it over other stain may, however, create a different colour than what is advertised.

I bought this product and applied on dresser, after 24 hours it is still sticky and not dry why/

Asked by: RAaa
Maybe poor ventilation? Maybe surface wasn't properly prepped? I used this on benches. Can't remember how long it took to dry but now we use them every day and they look beautiful.

I have a new piece of furniture built from 3/4" Maple Plywood. Can this product be used without prestain and still have the same quality of finish?

Asked by: Joel
The plywood veneer may have different rates of absorption. I would do a test on the underside of furniture with stain only. If it’s not to your liking sand it lightly and use conditioner and stain .

Can this product be used on an exterior cedar deck? I know what the can says, I'm seeking a professional opinion. Every exterior deck product I've used does not stand up on the flat deck surface.

Asked by: dk506
Hi dk506, This Penetrating Wood Stain will not hold up to the outdoor elements, even if you topcoat with an exterior finish. We recommend trying our Varathane Premium Gel Stain. While it is listed as an interior product; if using outdoors, you can protect the stain with an exterior oil based finish.

Is varathane shiny? CA it be used outside?

Asked by: JoLee
Hi, Great question! Our Classic Penetrating Wood Stain dries flat. However, if excess stain is not wiped off before it has dried, it will dry shiny. Also, this stain is for interior surfaces only and is not recommended outdoors.

Can I use this product to stain my wood floor and stairs? Any additional steps before and after I apply this product to wood floor?

Asked by: shelly
Hi Shelly, Yes, you can apply our Classic Penetrating Oil Based Wood Stain on wood floors and stairs. For unfinished wood; Begin sanding with #120 grit sandpaper and progress through #150, #180 and #220 grits. Before staining, remove all sanding dust using a rag dampened with mineral spirits, or vacuum. If a filler or putty is used, make sure that it does not contain wax and allow for enough time to dry thoroughly. Soft woods such as pine, fir and maple require a wood conditioner. Use Varathane Premium Wood Conditioner before sanding and staining. After application, you can top coat with either an oil based finish after 8 hours or a water based finish after 24 hours.

Curing time.  How long would this product take to cure? As I am intending to use staircase i am concerned how long it will be toxic.  Is it safe to use indoors while we live in there?

Asked by: Yuujjnn
Hi Yuujjnn, Our Penetrating Oil-Based Wood Stain is fully cured usually between 7-14 days. This depends on how many coats were applied, the temperature and humidity in the home, etc. Once cured it it no longer off-gassing. It is safe to use indoors while you live there. However, have plenty of air flow and if there is an odor that is troublesome, we recommend running fans to create air circulation or head outdoors for fresh air.
