It actually made soft, spongy wood quite solid. I was skeptical, because the instructions said to remove all the "decayed and soft wood." And if you do that, what's the point? If the wood were not "decayed and soft," I wouldn't need a wood hardener. Still, I thought it was worth a try, since the alternative would have involved replacing a section of flooring. I removed the parts that were rotten to the point of really disintegrating and hoped that somehow it would work on the remaining semi-rotten wood. It did. The wood soaked it up and, after it dried, I applied a second coat and it got even harder. Then I filled a few large gaps in the wood with Bondo for Wood and, at least so far, it seems to be a very solid surface. If your area is hidden, or if you're willing to paint afterwards, this might work.

I purchased this product to treat a spalted maple hollow form bowl that I turned on a lathe. Spalted wood has very interesting color and pattern but since spalting is the beginning of rot, it is much softer than wood not spalted. This product allowed me to sand and finish to a nice shine. It definitely met my expectations.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from caution: this is an acid I bought this to harden rotting wood on a soffit. It comes in a metal can with a hole the size of a quarter. You have to brush it on. I poured some in to a red solo cup and it immediately dissolved the cup. I was not expecting an acid as a hardener? Poured all over my leg and pool deck, which i now have to scrub with acetone to get the hardener off. This should either be a spray or have a removable top so you can actually get a brush on there. I recommend getting a soup can to pour it into

I transfer this to a small squeeze bottle with a long snout, and I can squirt this stuff into compromised wood very easily. It hardens the wood in an hour or so then I paint right over it. I use it mostly on old sheds where strong wood is more necessary than looks, so I never follow up with the wood filler putty. Its expensive, though. I wish I could by it in a gallon, or larger size.

I followed the instructions and used it on some wooden window sills and surrounding areas which were having some problems with rot. I applied the hardener and was surprised how thin the liquid was. I let it set and then did it several more times, but it barely hardened the wood. I will now need to find a more substantial product and will likely return what is left. Maybe it would work better in other applications, but it didn't do the trick for what I was trying to do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works like a CHAMP! I had a can of this product in my shed for over 20 years and used it very little. It finally got lost. I recently bought a fresh can and tho I felt it was pretty high priced, I needed it to harden up some water damaged legs on a bench I was working on. It did a great job and after I was finished hardening the legs I mixed some with very fine sawdust I had from sanding projects to even out some voids on the bottom of the legs. This worked great too! No complaints but be careful not to get it on other surfaces when applying it as this just creates extra work bringing these surfaces back to where they belong. You might say, "I learned the hard way." I would definitely buy it again.

Excellent sets up quickly, but you must were gloves and don't let it spill on you, it's very fast drying and very hard to remove. But it does the job well.Don't pour into a plastic cup, it ate right through in two minutes. I couldn't get it off my shoes.

I used this product to harden some dry rot in the bottoms and ends of my 12 foot long clear cedar decking, which has been in place for 26 years. Rather than replace the deck boards for a small amount of dry rot at the ends and bottoms. Note that you should not use this product to try to reinforce any structural/load bearing areas. It's strictly for appearance issues, and also it hardes the compromised dry rotted wood, allowing for surface filling, for appearance and water shedding surface, The Wood Hardener dries quickly, and within 2 - 4 hours you can apply bondo, shape for appearance and bearing surface it on the underside next to support joists. I've also used this product in the past to treat minor appearance dry rot on my roof rafter ends, where gutter overflows caused some minor dry rot. Clean out the loose dry rot, treat with hardener, fill with wood filler/bondo, shape, prime and paint. Matches the rest of the painted house. So far after 5 years, no degradation of those treated ends.

Asked by: Lonewolf
Thank you for reaching out. Rust-Oleum Varathane Wood Hardener must be applied with a bristle brush. We don't recommend using a sprayer as it will not perform or dry properly as a result. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

I used channel lock pliers to get the lid off. Don't know why they use that design but the Minwax brand wood hardener has the same type cap.

Can tong oil be used after applying this wood hardener? Will hardener change color of wood?
Asked by: John
If you apply this product as directed, applying multiple times until the surface is shiny and allowed to cure, the wood won't absorb the oil and it will be a little darker. Prevention of water or other fluid penetration is one purpose of this product.

I have painted exterior trim that is soft from water damage. Is this effective if applied to painted wood, or does the paint need to be sanded or stripped? BTW, the Use and Care Manual download just shows a picture of part of the container. It would be nice to have a users guide or instructions.
