Pine, fir, alder, birch and other soft woods have uneven grain structure, which may cause uneven, blotchy colour without proper conditioning. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great on Pine and Spruce I use this on all of my SPF projects before staining. Works great. I apply a liberal coat without pooling, and wait about half an hour. Smells very chemical-ly but the smell dissipates pretty quick once dry. Definitely recommend.

How strong is its smell? and for how long does it stay?

The Varathane Wood Conditioner is oil-based, and has a solvent smell. The smell will not linger long, and should dissipate soon after the product has dried.

Would this be good to use on Maple?

Hi Adam, Yes, our oil based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner can be used on Maple. We recommend not allowing the conditioner to dry. Apply the stain right after wiping off the excess conditioner.

Hi woodlove, When our Oil-Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner is applied on exterior surfaces, it will crack and peel from the exposure to moisture.

The product description on the HD website said it's good for both oil- and water-based stains while the container says it is NOT RECOMMENDED for water-based stains. What should I do if I want to use a water-based stain after applying this conditioner?

Hi Shak, The label is correct and our Oil-Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner is not recommended for use with water-based stains. We recommend getting our Varathane Water-Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner instead as it works under water based stains. We hope this new information is helpful.
