Rated 1 out of 5 by from Tacky finish Used this product to finish an antique oak tabletop. Thoroughly sanded and wiped down the surface so that it was smooth and all traces of the old finish and dust were removed. Applied one thin coat and 18 hours later the finish is still tacky. I was careful to follow all the instructions and stirred the stain before using and a couple of times throughout the process. I agree with other reviews that it goes on streaky and has a paint like pigment. I did not read all the reviews as I trusted that Varathane is a tried and true brand. I’ll go back and change my review if this stuff ever dries hard to the touch but right I’m very frustrated as I took great pains to make sure the wood was perfectly prepped.

can this be used on plywood outside in the garden?

Hi DDubya, Unfortunately, our Oil-Based Stain & Polyurethane is for indoor use only. For your plywood, you could try our Varathane Premium Gel Stain. While it is listed as an interior product, you can top coat it with an exterior oil based finish to protect it.
