Rated 5 out of 5 by from I used it for hardwood floor!!!! Although the product is not for hardwood floor, I used it for floor anyway due to the concern about high odour from oil-based formula. I applied one coat of this product and then applied two coats of regular water-based poly withing 3/4 hours along with light sanding between coats. I got a beautiful color and a smooth finish. It's already been three or so month. The floor seems to be fine under heavy use for now. So, it seems like a good product overall.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible Results and NOT "Single Step" Worst junk out there. I had vague recollections of about 15 years ago using a product like this that I think came from Minwax. It worked great. I see Home Depot has dropped that product line so I thought I'd give this a go. With foam applicator, this stuff does not sink in to the wood at all but tends to pool on top instead leaving really ugly blotches. To get rid of the blotches on this cherry stain, I had to put three thick coats on and now my oak looks like it's been painted almost black. The next piece of trim, I put a much lighter coat on and it barely colours the wood. So much for "single step". If I get this to darken to it's advertised colour, I'm guessing it will take about 4 coats., Never again. I'll go find the minwax product or go back to the old fashioned way of stain + varnish.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible Results Results from this are disappointing to say the least. Product looks great after first coat but raised the grain. Any attempts to sand (using the prescribed 320 grits) resulted in removal of the stainin a patern similar to a brush stroke. The finish is very uneven. Additional coats completely hide the wood grain. Think of this product more as a translucent paint than the clear product advertised. The results are ugly. Use at your own risk.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dries very quickly. Test on scrap first. Dries very quickly. Make sure you test in on a piece of scrap wood first. I used this on Birch plywood and it gave a nice finish, but it doesn't feel very smooth. You can't really use it to 'touch up' a spot; you will need to repaint a large area to make sure the paint blends in. Make sure you test in on a piece of scrap wood first.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A bit too dark I liked the quality of the product - went on easy and evenly. My only complaint would be that it was definitely darker than "Golden Oak" after a second coat.

thinking of using this on my kitchen cabinets, currently somewhere between golden oak/pecan. Hoping to get a stain that is medium in regards to light/darkness, & is kind of like ashy brown. If this colour would not fit that, is there one you recommend?

Asked by: Leanne
Hi Leanne, I used this on a whole set of railing inside a York region school. The directions are accurate, stirring frequently is best to use the whole can without build-up. It’s a rich dark tone, but not ashy or grey. Simple application, dries in 20 min, multiple coats it asks for scuffing after 24hr period.

Is this stain good for stair rails and spindles?

Asked by: Melissa
It depends what's on them now. It's likely an oil-based varnish, so it's best to prep the surface before applying water-based polyurethane. The advantage of water-based is no smell and easy cleanup, so if that's why you're thinking of it, then follow the tips at this location: https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/water-based-finishing-tips/

Can I apply this product on top of an existing finished wood floor so as to give the floor a slightly darker colour?

Asked by: John
I mostly use it for furniture projects, although I did use it on a bedroom floor, I sanded the hardwood completely and applied 3 coats, it looked beautiful but wasn’t very durable at all BUT I didn’t use a sealer so that may have been the problem. You would definitely have to sand the floor first to remove whatever sealant is on the floor.

Is this suitable for flooring?

Hi Peter, Unfortunately, our Stain & Polyurethane was not designed for floor applications as it will not hold up to the foot traffic.

What is a fast and easy way to stain cupboards?

First time stripping paint from kitchen cupboards. I am looking for a colour which is not to dark, to use and how to apply? Most of the cupboards are the same shade after stripping but a few of the drawers are a reddish colour Thanks for any help
Asked by: Anonymous
There is no real fast way to complete this project. If you are down to bare wood then you can use this product to stain and seal the cupboards. I hope this helps.

What is the shelf life for this and the other Varathane stain product line up? What can I do to extend the viable service life of this stain after the initial use? I'd like to use it now. Then resume using it in ~5 months.

Asked by: rpiggott
Hi rpiggott, Great question! Our Water-Based Stain & Polyurethane has a shelf life of 3 years. To extend the life of your can, we recommend sealing it tight after each use to avoid moisture from getting trapped inside. As well, while in storage, keep the can in an area where the temperature will not drop below 10C as the contents will freeze. We hope this new information is helpful.
