Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as intended I did a full strip and refinish. Once you get the thickness of each coat down it goes on fine. Used the varathane applicator. Ensure to mix extremely well, mine had a ton of solids settled at the bottom of the can. I didn't realize this on my first can and ended up with a lot of waste on the first go. Still turned out great. Did 4 rooms, appx 1000 sq ft and used 4 gallons. 3 coats in 3 rooms, 2 coats in a lesser used room. One thing I would change next time is better scuff sanding and dust removal after the first coat. This is a critical step and I did end up with some dust particles.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great top coat I like that finish I use it to seal and protect all my chalk paint projects... I have repainted a bedroom set, a desk and a bathroom vanity all holding up excellent to every day use. I usually do 2 coats and I wait at least a day before I apply the second coat. Works well for me,,, I use sponges to apply.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Soft and Scratches Easily Feels like soft plastic, and scratches very easily. Gently rubbing a fingernail on it to test the surface hardness, and it scrapes right off without much effort. Other objects resting on the table left deep marks. Very disappointed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This is one of the worst wood finishing products I've ever used. The spray from the can is not properly atomized, and comes out in uncontrolled large droplets rather than a mist. The large drops land on the project and quickly dry into uneven dots. Subsequent sprays don't improve it and simply add to the poor finish. If you spray enough material to form a film, the film does not self-level and sets into an uneven, botchy finish. Don't waste your money and time!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this product It is hard to find a quality water-based clear coat for furniture. This is it!! Lovely barely-there sheen and no brush strokes!! The only issue is I have to drive 200km to pick it up as my local Home Depot fails to keep it in stock.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great matte finish I've used this product for years, primarily on distressed or antiqued items to avoid adding any sheen to them. Fast drying, light coats.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Complex floor with many different materials The finish it provided was a rich colour and really brought out the grains. The flooring project was a very complex one of wood discs, stone and sand therefore the tough yet elasticity of the product was important. Make sure the area is well ventilated.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Zero Integrity - Do Not Buy Absolute garbage product, do not waste your money. 5 days after applying the final coat on my oak hardwood floor I did a hardness test using my fingernail. The coating scratched off right down to the bare wood with very little pressure. Then after moving furniture back into the room I found the coating full of deep scuffs and scratches, again right down to the bare wood. After 5 coats and plenty of drying time this product does not hold up. If you were thinking about using this on your next project, think twice.

How soon will I be able to place bedroom furniture back on my floors after final application? How many days will it take for zero odour/safely sleep in the room again?

Asked by: How many days
I recommend three days curing before replacing furniture. Set the furniture in place do not slide in place. It’s best to use felt pads also. Odour is mostly dissipated in one day. Excellent product. Too bad it’s doubled in price in three years.

I thought I followed proper directions for this product but after several days the clear coat is scratching off like a thin wax coating on the stained table top, how do I properly remove the finish coat now without damaging stain finish?

Asked by: Jennyk123
Hi Jennyk123, We're sorry to hear about this! While the finish can be handled after a few hours, it can take between 7-14 days for full cure hardness, depending on how many coats were applied. Sanding will be the best option to remove the finish. However, you should still be careful not to remove the stain underneath.

I made a book box for my infant son, while I don’t foresee him eating it, I just want to confirm that this product is safe for me to use to finish my project as he will be touching it lots. Is it food/baby safe?

Asked by: Shawn10
Hi Shawn10, Once the product fully cures, which can range from 7-21 days, depending on temperature and humidity, the coating will be non-toxic. That being said, the product is not food safe even when fully cured. We hope this new information is helpful.

Can this be used on stairs (to a basement), and would it make it slippery or safe?

Asked by: Amberj
Hi Amber, Our Premium Wood Finish for Interior is not recommended for floor applications as it will not hold up to the foot traffic. We recommend our Varathane Diamond Wood Finish Floor Water-Based instead. However, it can be slippery if the surface was to be wet.

4 years ago I stripped and sanded our Oak kitchen table, I applied the "crystal clear" varathane. It was beautiful for a year or two, then it got sticky or tacky on top. We tried cleaning it, So this week I'm doing it again, what did I do wrong?

Asked by: jj36
Hi jj36, It doesn't sound like you did anything wrong with your initial application. There may have been something else that caused the stickiness as our stains and finishes do not change over time from use.

I'm going to use this for refinish hardwood floor, but wondering if I can directly apply this right after I use the sander to remove old painting. Thanks

Asked by: maggie
It you are applying it to bare wood, it will work.

Hi a couple questions. Is this suitable for bare pine tongue and groove walls and ceiling? Can this be sprayed? What is the appropriate respirator for spraying this?

Asked by: bert
It is perfect for bare pine. It’s water base so it does not have a harsh smell, I used it on home made poplar (aspen) cupboards, I used a paint brush and sanded smooth after the first coat, poplar tends to have fibres raise when wet, then light sanding if you apply a third coat, what I like the most of this finish is that it will not yellow the wood like the oil based polyurethane,

Can this be sprayed and is it safe to use over a painted surface

Asked by: the_count
Yes and yes. I spray it all the time with a gravity fed HVLP pneumatic spray paint anywhere from 40-60psi. Full strength, don’t thin it.  It’s also great over paint. 2-3 light coats. Sand with a 400-600 grit in between if you’ve got texture but not necessary if it lays down smooth. Does not yellow unless it’s left to pool in an area. Drys fast and wears great!
