Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product with a nice result I used this stain/poly mix as part of a refinishing project of my kitchen table and chairs. I was very pleased with the outcome. I would recommend applying with a small foam roller for an even coat. I originally used a high quality brush and it dried with visible streaks so I had to resand and applied with a roller. I have added some photos that show the chairs and table before and after. FYI I used a light blue chalk paint and clear coat for the non stained parts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Varathane’s Stain & Polyurethane Is The Real Deal! This stuff is easy to work with and looks Great! The Bannister that I refinished turned out Absolutely Beautiful!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible product. Stay far away. I have been refinishing furniture for many years and have used just about every product on the market. This stuff, which markets itself as being easy to use and simple since its a stain and Poly in one, is an absolute joke. It starts drying immediately, which means you have no time to fix mistakes or flick out that brush hair, but takes about 6 hours to fully dry, and even then its still a little tacky. You need about 8 coats in order to fully cover the wood (and this was with pine). It goes on like glue, and is one of the hardest things to get off your hands, so wear gloves at all times. They stupidly make the different surface finishes all with the exact same label so you need to do a fine print read to make sure you're getting the right finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful color If painted on with stain brush it is very dark. Rub excess off with a cloth to see the wood grain. Love the color!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not recommended Even with a recommended paint brush, I couldn't eliminate the brush marks. This product sets up too fast to evenly apply. I found that if you touch an area after about 3 to 5 minutes, you have wait until it drys and redo that area to fix the mark you left. Then I needed to purchase another can to complete the project, and the color and shine was noticeably different even tho it was the same product from the same store. Now, I will be stripping this product off my 100 year old cabinet and starting over. Going forward, I will be using a stain first then putting on a clear coat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 1 coat for sure Goes on very thick. Definitely good for one coat if you're using the correct brush.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One step stain and polyurethane Easy one application. By one step , I don’t mean one coat (3 coats on my railing) I mean no additional sealant to purchase and apply.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your money or time I bought this as I make a lot of handmade wood signs, and thought it would speed up my process. This product is thick, goopy, very sticky and impossible to apply evenly. If you put it on too thinly you can't see it, too thick and it pools and drips. I've never had a product this difficult to work with, I'll be returning it. Stick to stain and poly as separate products.

How long does it take the smell to dissipate?

Asked by: Brendan
Hi Brendan, Once the One Step Oil-Based Stain & Polyurethane has full cured, it should not longer be off gassing. Full cure can depend on how many coats applied, temperature and humidity, etc. The product usually takes 7-14 days to fully cure.

HI, DO I HAVE TO DO A LOT OF SANDING IF I USE THIS OVER TOP an exisitng medium brown coloured old dresser Thanks

Asked by: NipissingLights
Hi NipissingLights, Our Varathane Oil-Base Stain & Polyurethane can be applied to a existing paint or stain with no extensive sanding. However, if there is a an existing clear finish applied over the brown colour, we recommend scuff sanding with 220-grit for maximum adhesion. We also recommend cleaning the surface really well and test on a small inconspicuous area first to make sure you are satisfied with the colour and that it is adhering and drying properly.

Is this safe to use on a butcher countertop?

Asked by: Collin Cloudveil
Hi Collin Cloudveil, Yes, our One Step Oil-Based Stain & Polyurethane is safe to use on a butcher countertop. Just keep in mind, countertops get washed and dried several times a day, so touch ups may be required on high traffic areas. When painting countertops, our recommendation is to leave items to dry in a well ventilated area for one week after painting. This allows for the most complete curing as well as maximum coating hardness. As with any coating product, care should be taken to ensure that accidental ingestion does not occur.

Hi Katerina, Our One Step Oil-Based Interior Wood Stain & Polyurethane is not recommended for floor applications as it will not hold up to foot traffic and will crack and peel off.

can this be used on plywood outside in the garden?

Asked by: DDubya
Hi DDubya, Unfortunately, our Oil-Based Stain & Polyurethane is for indoor use only. For your plywood, you could try our Varathane Premium Gel Stain. While it is listed as an interior product, you can top coat it with an exterior oil based finish to protect it.
