Rated 2 out of 5 by from Caveat emptur: Does what it says, but that may not be right for you The product does what the label says it does: it goes on in one coat, and it does not require the prior application of a wood conditioner (which is generally employed before staining raw wood in order to ensure that there is no lifting of the wood grain when the stain is applied). But the product does other things which the labeling does not make clear, and which you ought seriously to consider before you choose to use it. First, the product is very thick: it absolutely cannot be applied with a cloth (though the label implies that it can), but must be brushed on. (And yes, Rustoleum, I did shake the can before I applied it.) Second, and related to this, the product cannot be layered on deliberately, in order to control color and depth - which is typically something that wood finishers would do with ordinary stains applied with cloth. In short, you get the color you get - and you'd better like it, because there is absolutely no way to change it without removing the finish. And believe me, removing the finish is the last thing you will want to do after putting work into crafting a beautiful wood project - it you can do it at all. As other reviewers have noted, this product is really more like a paint than a stain - though there is absolutely nothing in the labeling or marketing of the product to indicate this. If you are looking for a quick way to stain a piece of wood and be done with it, this product may be right for you. But if you put a lot of work into your wood and you are looking for a way to bring out the beauty of your project, you should avoid this and opt for a more traditional product. It may take you longer to finish, but you will have much more control over the results, and are less likely to be disappointed in the end.

I am confused as to what this product is. I have read conflicting information. It says to sand down to bare wood, and it penetrates the wood, yet it also says it will cover fiberglass and products that are not wood or already stained wood. I need to know what it can be applied over and if it sits on top like a gel stain, or if what doesn't penetrate needs to be wiped off
Asked by: ST
Happy to clear things up! This is a listing for Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain. This product is intended for use on bare, sanded wood, so that is can best penetrate and stain the surface. Excess stain must be wiped away to allow for proper drying. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Can i use it on top of varathane classic water based pre-stain?

Asked by: AB
Good question, AB! We don't recommend using the Rust-Oleum Varathane Fast Dry Wood Stain over the Varathane Water-based Pre-Stain as it will not be able to penetrate properly due to the difference in formulation. You'll need to use the Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-based Wood Stain instead. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Classic-Water-Based-Pre-Stain-Wood-Conditioner-340226/305626728 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

Color question. I applied Cognac Varathane wood stain last year. It is too reddish color than I expected. I already sanded the wood using 100 grid and then 200 grid. The Cognac stain became much lighter color, but not as much as raw woods. If I apply Dark Walnut over the Cognac, will the cognac stain will be covered and turn to dark walnut color? Or will be two different color mixed and give totally different color? If Dark walnut is too light to cover Cognac, what other color do you recommend except Ebony(it is too dark)?
Asked by: Mike
The Dark Walnut should cover and stay true to a very dark color. I applied over old floors that were heavily stained and abused. The coverage was just what I needed and turned out great. After a coat of polyurethane (oil based) they looked like new

Can I use Varathane premium interior wood stain on exterior Mahagony doors If I top coat with Varathane spar urethane exterior water base semi-gloss

I believe you can use the stain indoors or outdoors as long as it has a protective coat. This is a rich stain with great coverage. I used it to refinish 55 year old floors and they turned out absolutely beautiful!

I realize this is oil based, however, I'm wondering how quickly the fumes will dissipate? I want to stain my fireplace mantle but the house will need to be reoccupied within ~6 hours by my wife, who is pregnant, and our young daughter. The house will be ventilated with our 4600 CFM whole house fan while the product is drying. Is 6 hours enough time for the VOC's to dissipate? Does the product continue to off-gas after it has dried the way an oil-based enamel does?
Asked by: Matthew
I just stain a table top and the fumes were gone within 2-3 hours. It dries quick
