It does not heat right away like a heating pad. However, it does get to temperature. The mat is thick and water resistant. We set this up in our basement, along with a light, and started planting. So far the seedlings look great--even though the basement is not heated, this warming mat maintained the proper temperature for the seedlings to grow and thrive. So I put them on the mat in my basement, with a grow light above them. Temperature in my basement is about 64 degrees. Set the temperature for 78 degrees to test it. Checked on it an hour later and the temperature was at 78. Now I just checked on it each night when I get home, give them a little water if they need it and after a week several seeding are starting to spout. Rated 4 out of 5 by LittleBigheart from 80 degrees with help. I placed 2 trays of seedlings with plastic covers on mat and set thermostat to 80 degrees. House temp. was 62 degrees. Heat mat began to feel warm immediately. Max temp after 1/2 hour was 73.4 degrees. I heard my son get up to take his shower before going to work so turned house thermostat up to 72. As house temp rose so did that of the heat mat. Temp finally rose to 80 degrees and stayed there until house temp started falling below 68. I turned the mat's thermostat up to 82 and eventually 85 degrees to try to maintain the 80 degree mat temp in a cold house. With house temp at 65, the best temp I could get with mat thermostat set to 85 was 77 degrees. I covered the plastic tops of the seedling trays with very thin kitchen towels. The mat thermostat temp rose to 82 so I turned it back down to 82 degrees. The temp remained stable at 80 degrees with that setting and trays lightly covered while house temp was at 62 degrees. The mat is big enough for 2 lasagna sized pans. There was no assembly other than plugging it together and plugging it in. The mat arrived rolled up and it took a while and several heavy books to get it to lie flat. You're not suppose to get the thermostat probe wet but still needs to be close to your seedlings so the set up is not elegant. The thermostat turns the heat mat off when programmed temp achieved and back on again when temp falls below it. Thermostat is easy to program. Directions included. Rated 5 out of 5 by MARK from Good for Early Planting I got this heat mat for germinating my vegetable plants this spring but couldn't wait until then to try it out.so I set it up on a table in my shop, which is not heated, and put some of the small seed starter pods on the mat with some tomato and squash seeds. This system is good in that I do not need to heat an entire room to germinate the seeds but they must still be inside during cold months so not to freeze after sprouting as this device only heats the container w/soil. It took a while to find the right temperature setting and I recommend using a small thermometer with a probe to insert in the soil to get the right temperature; this is where the thermostat really comes in handy. You can find the soil temperature requirements online or from your local county extension agent. This set up is very easy to use and it works! I am looking forward to getting a head start to an early spring planting this year. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
