I've never used anything like this before and wasn't sure that I would like them. I was wrong! These are great! They are easy to set up (I have mine on a table on my patio) and easy to use. The media that came with it was packaged very nicely and really holds in moisture for the plants. Definitely recommend! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I got these to grow mint plants and i have a few critical things to say about this set up. the kit comes with enough coconut coir to fill 7 gallons each not 10 gallon. kit coconut coir filled only 2/3rd of each bag and after planting and watering in the coconut coir settled another full inch and the sides of the bags folded in making it hard to water them.. and i have used the same bags 5 gallon plastic bag pots and the plastic became brittle and unusable but this one kit came with enough coconut coir for two seven gallon pots after rolling the sides down to lower to soil level so in reality they are 7 gallon kit and not 10 gallon. on the positive the mint plants are growing vary good in the bag pots and coconut coir [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I’ve used coconut for my orchids for a long time but was skeptical that it would be any good for “regular” plants; I was wrong – the plants seem to love it. When you get it, the coir is really compacted down; it’s not something you can break apart unless and until you’ve soaked it in water. The directions say to soak in 18 gals of warm water but since it was over 100 degrees at my house all day, I just popped it into a wheelbarrow and stuck the hose in and added what looked to be sufficient water and it worked just fine. Because it was so compacted, I figured it’d take at least 2 hours for the brick to soak up enough water to be usable but in about 1.25 hours, it was damp and easily broken up. It didn’t need an entire 18 gallons to work – that makes it a little soupy for my preference but then it’s still very easy to scoop up and put where you want it. I’ve never worked with coir this fine before and I really like it. It has the texture of very fine mulch and holds water very well. I bought vegetable plants and flowers to test it out and both kinds are doing very well even with the really high temperatures we’ve been having. There are holes in the bottom of the bags to drain excess water so the plants won’t become waterlogged. I was worried that with our temperatures between 99 & 103 degrees , the plastic would wind up baking the roots but this is not the case. I imagine it’s because the outside of the bag is white to reflect heat. You could use this not just for planting but as a top-dressing mulch as well. You can use it straight or you can mix it with the soil of your choice. The coir included with the bags is enough for the bags without additional dirt. If you want just the coir without the bags, here is a link to the 2 pack: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Viagrow-11-lb-Coconut-Coir-Block-Soilless-Grow-Media-2-Pack-VCCB5-2/206034918 [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Perfect size for the backyard gardener.I cut the block in half and activated half in the container provided .I have a few places that I need to do an overseed in my lawn. I'll try mixing the coco with topsoil a little peat and some nitrogen starter mix and see what happens. the areas I'm overseeding are problem areas due to a poor irrigation system maybe the coco in the mix will help retain the moisture. The rest of the block I will cut off portions as I need it for potting projects, very storage convenient. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

The coir is somewhat amazing. The block expanded to the 2 cubic feet just as promised, maybe a little more. Getting it wet and crumbling up was much easier than anticipated, you just have to be patient and let the block sit in the water for about 15 minutes then is crumbles easily by hand. Two pictures show the before hydration and after, one picture shows the 10 gallon in the foreground and the 7 gallon in the background. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

The bag is soo dense and heavy, that its like a giant brick of concrete. I used a plastic storage container because the instructions told me it would take a considerable amount of 9 gallons of water to soak this in for it to expand and it did. What I got was a nice fluffy material that is like peat moss only clean. It is very good for potting any kind of indoor or outdoor plants because it drains well. You can even use this for hydroponic applications without soil. The volume you get is amazing. The plastic grow bags make it easy to grow veggies in for the season outdoors and then save it for next year. I used this to repot several house plants, a cactus, some peppers, and a peach tree seedling. It is suppose to last 2 years before breaking down. Only time will tell how good it works and how long it lasts. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

The media really holds moisture and, in the hot summertime, that is a huge plus. The bags are easy to fill and look stylish and cool. My plant certainly seems very happy in its new home and I expect with the combination of potting soil and the media, it will thrive very nicely. I would definitely recommend. I would say they actually probably hold over 10 gallons. You are basically getting the bags for free with the coco coir so its a good deal even if you aren't sure about using the bags. When filled, the bag is 18 inches wide 12.5 inches tall. The coco coir seems to be good quality so far and hydrates as expected. The included block makes 18 gallons so you'll need to supplement the bags with a bit of perlite or vermiculite for a soilless grow media. I mixed mine with soil, compost, and vermiculite for a more traditional potting mix. If you want to know the type of bag that this is: think of the kind of thick plastic that garden soil would come in. This grow bag would be similar to just poking holes in the bag that the soil comes in and growing your plants directly in that. Some people actually do that and it does work for the most part. The grow bag is hard to move around, but I was able to do it. The bottom of the bags do indeed come to a point rather than being flat. I included some pictures to prove that (with some simple origami skills) you can square up the bag so that it sits flat. Since this bag holds so much soil, I would say you could most likely grow an indeterminate tomato or other large annual in these with not much trouble.
