[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have never used coconut to grow plants in place of peat but it works very well. On my first bag, I packed in the the bricks and added the water. They expanded too much for what I was doing. I should have read the instructions first. I ended up blending potting soil with the coconut. That works well. The bags are durable so I will get a few uses out of them. They make a good prepotting environment for transplants. The bags have holes in them so I placed the whole thing in a pie pan to catch the drainage.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I like this coconut coir product because it is 100% natural, renewable, holds a lot of water and it maintains aeration. It is easy to use, remove the block out of the bag, place it in a large container, such as a wheel barrel or cart, and soak it with a lot of water. Watch as the block of coir fluffs up and magically expands. One block expanded and it filled 3/4 of my large wheeled cart. If I had used warm water as instructed, it would have expanded all the way to the top. I mixed the expanded coir with soil to plant my ornamental palms in a plastic grow bags and pots. The three gal plastic grow bags are durable, so I expect to reuse them a lot. They come with precut holes which will help with drainage. Once filled with soil media and plat, it stands upright. They are easy to move and transport. The coconut coir is more environmentally friendly than peat moss because of its sustainability. A single coconut tree can product many coconut throughout the year. Peat moss comes from peat bogs (northern swamp and marshes), which take many years to grow. Coconut coir, on the other hand, is an eco friendly because it is renewable and it a byproduct. After processing a coconut for its water and meat, what is left is the hard shell and the fiber husk. This byproduct(s) is excellent for horticultural applications. If they don't get used, they end up in landfills or large compost mounts.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a nice sized 3 gallon grow bag that will support most vegetables and edibles, in singles. The bag are made of PE and are BPA free. They are durable and reusable for multiple growing seasons. These bags are also lightweight and easily repositionable, as needed. Drainage holes are pre-punched; the bags stand up when filled with soil or grow media. Inside is black, outside is white and the bags can be reversed to adjust soil temperature. Its design makes them suitable for indoor or outdoor gardening as well as hydroponics. The grow bags come with 5 kg block of Viagrow premium coconut coir growing media. This is growing medium that is excellent by itself or as an enrichment for soil. The coir is composed of three different types of compressed coconut fibers. This makes coconut coir very friendly alternative to sphagnum peat most, which is very environmentally destructive. It is a high quality medium that is also low sodium. Coir does not contain fertilizer so addition of hummus or another ecofriendly and natural fertilizer is recommended. Viagrow coir maintains optimum air to water ratio, increases nutrient retention and allows for a proper aeration. It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor gardening. It is flushed of excess sodium and has pH range of 5.5,6.5 and a low EC of 0.5. Since the coir is heavily compressed, it expands about 5 times when water is added. This is a fun process to literally watch the medium grow. This is a great alternative to typical pots. The grow bags are durable, super easy to handle, reusable and very practical. 3 gallon size is ideal for most vegetables and edibles. The coconut coir is a superb product to use by itself as soilless medium or blended with soil or other amendments. It is also super ecofriendly alternative to the environmentally devastating peat moss.

I will try all three methods suggested in the description of this product in the Home Depot referenced below. I also read all the reviews shown on that reference. Also see how it worked out for me. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am fascinated with Coco Coir. It is somewhat more environmentally friendly than sphagnum peat. It feels gritty and doesn’t seem to settle as much when you fill containers. I must admit that I do cut the coir mix that I use with a peat lite mix at a ratio around 3 parts coir and 1 part peat lite mix. I can’t explain why I do it, but I do have good luck with my mix so I’m sticking with it. I have used this mix to successfully root Sago Palm pups among other things. This is the highest quality coir that I’ve worked with. The coir brick was easy to wet and expand as the brick seemed to shed from the outside in the presence of water. It does go a bit more quickly if you use something to help it along. I used a Dutch weeder to scrape the outside of the brick as it moistened. I don’t have access to warm water in my work area. I’ve done bag culture production of tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers before using a drain and waste system with great results but it’s been a while (If you manage the timer properly, balancing irrigation time with the plants’ needs as they grow, waste is almost nonexistent). There’s a bit of nutrient in the peat lite mix that I incorporated into the mix but that’s all that I intend to add prior to planting. Since my growing system includes constant feed irrigation my plants should be okay. If I was using the Coir and Grow Bags to grow garden plants I’d do that part differently and definitely incorporate a bit of dry fertilizer and possibly some garden soil. The bags are high quality made from relatively safe material and easy to use but a bit smaller than I expected. Once filled, they support themselves. They are a reversible white and black, but I’d be just as happy if they were just black. I read that the bags are reusable so it will be interesting to see how many growing seasons they last in my greenhouse. I like things that last. All in all this is a pretty good deal.

What are the dimensions of the bags? What are the dimensions of the blocks before hydrating?
Asked by: Heather
The compressed bricks of coir measure 12" X 12" X 5". Seems small, but it expands to an awesome amount of soil. The bags sitting filled and with the bottom sitting flat measure approximately 8" X 7" X 13". I thought they would measure squarely but it didn't turn out that way.
