Rated 1 out of 5 by from Uniquivocally not Premium cedar mulch !!! I typically buy my mulch in bulk from my local garden centre, but ran a little short this year. I decided to buy a few bags of this product to finish my projects, that was a big mistake. When I opened the first couple of bags I noticed some colour variations, initially I thought it was due to uneven dye application but on closer examination I found blue wood chips - old skids ? previously varnished chips, even laminated pressboard furniture chips. Made from 100% Canadian white cedar. Really - Shame on you Home depot. And Vigoro's description of "Natural forest products" must be slang for any old piece of wood. Buyer beware.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 2 stars for inaccurate description This mulch is good, for the price. Definitely not 100% cedar, as described here, and even what it says on the bag, “natural forest products”, is also dicey. It contains large pieces of milled wood, as well as processed wood products. Attached is a photo of a piece of mulch that came in my most recent bag, with the dye rinsed off to show detail. It’s a square piece of either plywood or OSB. If you’re looking for an all-natural product, free of contaminants, this is not it. That said, it’s cheap, it looks good and typically holds its colour pretty well in my yard. For the price, it’s a solid option for a decorative covering that keeps moisture in and weeds out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from VIGORO BLACK MULCH I purchased 48 bags of this mulch, which garnered a lot of compliments from passersby and Neighbors. It definitely makes your landscaping “pop“! One thing I hadn’t noticed is that it gives a colour retention guarantee of one year. So I think I would be disappointing if it just faded… Something to note: my hands and feet were black after each application/ spreading. So I’m not sure what they dye it or stain it with. That is why I only gave it 4 stars. Price was excellent fir the volume. In addition it was great to just pull in and have them loaded in my truck. They are NOT so heavy as to cause undo strain. I’m 5’3” 158 lbs. and hauled it all out of the truck myself (two separate Also, it is petty fine pieces. No huge chunks.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not mulch Not black I bought six bags of this and the first two weren't bad but the remaining bags are more like sawdust than wood chips. Fortunately the better bags went on the front garden, but the stuff I used on the back garden was more like wood shavings than mulch. The process they use to colour the chips leaves a lot to be desired, as the "black" was more like grey with lots of untreated whitish material threw-out. Not please and not impressed with their 12 month colour fast warranty when it isn't even the right colour to begin with. Would NOT PURCHASE again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Faded in just over a day... Claims to have a colour guarantee of 12 months? The colour barely lasted 12 hours. I spent several hours installing the product, only to see the rain wash away the deep, black colour to reveal a dull, grey tone literally overnight. Very disappointed and hoping I can be reimbursed for this purchase. What a waste of time. I wish there was a photo/video upload option so I could show potential consumers what I have experienced with this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from More Like Hog Fuel I hate writing poor reviews, hate dissing products, so would like to just let folks know this wasn't what I thought it would be. I couldn't decide between the Vigoro mulch and another company's so purchased the Vigoro on the advice from the staff at the garden centre. I put it down a couple of days before there was any chance of rain and was alarmed, initially, at how coarse it was, not really what I thought a mulch should be. After the rainfall I was even more alarmed at how much it had already lost colour. Today I purchased a couple of bags of the other brand, and put it down right beside the Vigoro product. There was such a difference I felt I should add a photo. The mulch on the left is the Vigoro product, the mulch on the right is the other brand. I'll be cleaning out all of the Vigoro mulch and disposing of it, and replacing it with the other. By the way, the Vigoro mulch has only been down for less than a week, and has only been through one rainfall.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Quality changed I have bought this product for a few years and it appears that something changed this year. The colour is still a similar black but the content has quite a few pieces of painted wood and some plastic. Further, in previous year I would lay this down and smell the cedar, which i love. This year there is no cedar smell at all and the first impression was a very chemical smell. I looks ok but I will not be buying this again. Very disapointed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from very poor colour I had five bags left from 2019 so I bought 15 bags of the black mulch two weeks ago. The 2020 purchased product was very poor quality compared to 2019. Black dye was light, approximately 20% was still undyed (natural wood colour) and faded dramatically after first rain. Also, 40% of the product was almost sawdust as opposed to chips or larger aggregate. Very dissappointed and recommend to ask to open a bag at a minimum before purchasing.

What is the mulch dyed with? Also does this product decompose and provide nutrients to the soil?

Asked by: JRad
Good day and sorry for the delay, We use iron oxide and carbon black base pigments. Cedar composts very slowly, contrary to other mulches. The advantages of cedar mulch on the conservation of soil moisture and its slow decomposition dominate the absorption of nitrogen which can be involved. However, it is not recommended to mix mulch with the soil at the end of the season, since it will seek to use nitrogen for its decomposition to the detriment of your next season plants

Is it safe to use this mulch in a vegetable garden?

Asked by: Dave
Good day, we use iron oxide pigments widely found in nature for coloring and has been used as pigments for centuries. They are not endangering the environment or human beings. However, straw will be more appropriate. Cedar mulch does carry a pH that is also not ideal for vegetable garden Regards

Is this actually made from Cedar?  I don't see any mention of cedar on the product itself.

Asked by: Addy
I went to my local HD to see if the picture was accurate. Indeed the picture is an accurate representation of the bag, which means that this product is NOT cedar (despite what the website description says). This product is made from "natural forest products and colorant", which is a euphemism in the industry for non-cedar.

Is this safe for pets?

Asked by: Shosh
Good day, mulch as you know is a residue of wood, so it is not recommended for dogs to eat wood. There is nothing attracting to the pet like the cocoa beans mulch for instance but still your pets should avoid eating it.
