Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not consistent I have bought lots of Vigoro Black Earth, the consistency is that of composted mulch & provides fairly good drainage. I decided to top dress some garden areas as I didn’t want to mulch all my gardens until spring. I bought 12 bags and bag #5 is very different and I’ve already dumped it onto the garden. It’s got pearlite in it and looks nothing like the stuff that I’ve already spread :-(

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lumber & soil Wish I could’ve picked my lumber but decent for raised beds and the soil was as advertised. HD does many things pretty good.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not as advertised I bought this because my usual brand was out of stock. It does not at all look like any Black Earth I have purchased in the past. For one, it is light brown not dark at all, two, even when mixed with current soil, it makes your garden look dry and cracked instead of healthy even with daily watering. This product also claims to be weed-free, but the two garden beds I used it in are literally saturated with weeds and the ones next to them that I did not use the product on have a handful of weeds. I would absolutely not recommend this product to anyone.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Soil is soil, but time is money The soil was too wet out if the bag, it also had more pieces of wood that didn't break down than I like. Soil is soil, but I had to rake it out more than usual.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Substituted Didnt recieve any, got substituted for black mulch!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Strong stinky manure like soil The more nutritious the soil, the more manure content there will be. That is how I would describe this stinky manure soil. When you first pour out the soil, there is a strong manure smell. Make sure you you wear your old worn out shoes and clothes. It will ruin a good outfit. On the other hand, the plants are really growing well.

We bought four bags of this yesterday. It is certainly not "odorless!" What was added to this humus to make it smell so bad? It was fine last year. Will the vegetables I was forced to plant it be safe to eat?

Asked by: Yemaia
I used it about a year ago, and like you, I thought it was fine. If it smells kind of musty, that means the bags have been left very wet. Since I don't know what it smells like, I can't say. I have a very good nose, so I'd smell something. Also, it's not just soil that's in there. You can see pieces of wood, so you never know what's been mixed.

not sure but sound like this would be good to grow pineapple in? yes?

Asked by: juan69er
This soil is mixed with tiny wood chips, and have a feeling it would dry out if not checked frequently. However, I used it outside, so I don't know if it would work for what you want to do.
