Rated 1 out of 5 by from More Like Hog Fuel I hate writing poor reviews, hate dissing products, so would like to just let folks know this wasn't what I thought it would be. I couldn't decide between the Vigoro mulch and another company's so purchased the Vigoro on the advice from the staff at the garden centre. I put it down a couple of days before there was any chance of rain and was alarmed, initially, at how coarse it was, not really what I thought a mulch should be. After the rainfall I was even more alarmed at how much it had already lost colour. Today I purchased a couple of bags of the other brand, and put it down right beside the Vigoro product. There was such a difference I felt I should add a photo. The mulch on the left is the Vigoro product, the mulch on the right is the other brand. I'll be cleaning out all of the Vigoro mulch and disposing of it, and replacing it with the other. By the way, the Vigoro mulch has only been down for less than a week, and has only been through one rainfall.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Acceptable Overall the quality is acceptable for the price. It has good coverage but the mulch is quite fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product, good coverage Met our needs to provide coverage across various gardens in our yard. The $3.33 price was great against products in the market.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Colour Faded Quickly Late in the season I bought Vigoro's Black Mulch. I really liked the fine shredded texture of the mulch, it spread easily. But, the product states it has a 1 year colour retention guarantee, but now after 7 weeks or so, the colour has already faded to a charcoal grey colour and even lighter in some spots. 6 to 8 weeks is not 1 year.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Uniquivocally not Premium cedar mulch !!! I typically buy my mulch in bulk from my local garden centre, but ran a little short this year. I decided to buy a few bags of this product to finish my projects, that was a big mistake. When I opened the first couple of bags I noticed some colour variations, initially I thought it was due to uneven dye application but on closer examination I found blue wood chips - old skids ? previously varnished chips, even laminated pressboard furniture chips. Made from 100% Canadian white cedar. Really - Shame on you Home depot. And Vigoro's description of "Natural forest products" must be slang for any old piece of wood. Buyer beware.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Misrepresented terrible product - read reviews 1st I bought 5 bags of this black "mulch" in May to put in my vegetable garden (tomato plants and beans). I have an awesome garden every year. The idea this year (first year with mulch) was to put newspaper down around the tomato plants and either side of the bean rows followed with this black "mulch" to keep the weeds down while maintaining moisture for the plants. Well it worked well for the weeds but I think it actually dried out the tomato plants because of the black colour which felt very warm to the hand when touched. As well the colourant was coming off on my hands so I had to wear gloves! The worst part of all of this is that 2 of the 4 tomato plants have now died in mid July despite constant watering and the other 2 are right behind. I have bought 2 more mature tomato plants to replace them and pulled the mulch back from around all the tomato plants. The beans are coming through but no beans yet! I read where the use of some mulches will react with the soil in depleting the nitrogen needed for the tomato plants but worse than that I worry that the black colourant chemical is affecting the plants negatively and may make any fruit if any ever develops unhealthy to eat! I would only use this product for weed control in beds where desired plants are not being grown as it seems to kill more than just the weeds. Amzaing that it's Vigoro name leads one to believe it is going to help the garden or flower bed plants. I think my garden is a financial and growing loss this year and will rake eveything out for garbage disposal before I start again next year. I think the Canadian Dept. of Agriculture should have a good look at this stuff. Yes it looks like whatever wood they could lay their hands on got ground up and an unlisted black chemical added. In my case though, unlike other comments, this black chemical is there for the duration and not fading out. I think it is a totally bad product! If I still had the plastic bags and bill I'd take it back to H.D. for a refund or just to lay there for them to dispose of! Amazing that their garden guy said "Oh, yes this will work whatever colour it is!" Well indeed it does keep the weeds down!

Is this actually made from Cedar?  I don't see any mention of cedar on the product itself.

    Asked by: Addy
I went to my local HD to see if the picture was accurate. Indeed the picture is an accurate representation of the bag, which means that this product is NOT cedar (despite what the website description says). This product is made from "natural forest products and colorant", which is a euphemism in the industry for non-cedar.
