I have always used BIN for priming and stain blocking in spite of its cost. The complaints about the spell is to me over rated; for my last project I purchased Kilz Original oil 5 gallon to save money (Pros swear by Original) but I found it did not cover as well as BIN and the smell lingered for days. BINs smell is usually gone with the time it drys, or within an hour or two, but never last days. BIN can be difficult to work with because of how thin it is, but the results beat every other primer I have used as an experienced DIYer. I'll spend the extra money next time and go with BIN.

Can this used on laminate countertops? Should the countertops also be sanded before applying this primer?
Asked by: CuriousDIYer
Glad you asked. While the Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-based Primer can be used on laminate, we wouldn't recommend it for use on kitchen countertops as it is not a food-grade coating. Instead, we recommend using the Rust-Oleum Specialty Countertop Coating, which does require thorough sanding beforehand. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Specialty-29-oz-Countertop-Coating-Tint-Base-246068/202820906 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

Asked by: Karla Sargent
Happy to help Karla. Zinsser B-I-N Shellac Base Primer cannot be thinned. If the product has thickened, it should not be used. B-I-N Shellac Base Primer has a 3 year shelf life. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

Can I use this product on polystyrene trim? It is the type of narrow trim that goes in corners and around doors

I don’t see the information in the literature specifically. Thank you
Asked by: Deb
Happy to help Deb. While Zinsser B-I-N Shellac Based Primer can be applied to a variety of surfaces, for polystyrene trim we recommend using Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water Based Primer. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-Bulls-Eye-1-2-3-1-qt-White-Water-Based-Interior-Exterior-Primer-and-Sealer-2004/100398398 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

For wall paneling in a 1970 house which primer will be best please? Do you have to sand the paneling or is there a primer that will stick without sanding? Thanks

Asked by: Marietjie
I would ensure the panelling is clean but it should not need a sanding. Bin primer sticks to everything and dries very quickly. It is quite toxic so ensure you wear a proper mask when you are using it on a large area. For a water based version your should try the 123 primer. It is not as toxic and works just as well, although  it does not do as good a job of stain blocking.

Do I need to fully prime my door again? Or just the raw wood spots? I have scraped, sanded and latex-primed my front door and bought this product to help cover up the raw wood spots where other layers of paint were removed during scraping/sanding. The latex primer didn’t cover the raw wood spots. Do I need to re-prime the whole door again with this product?
Asked by: Kim
You can spot prime with this with good results
