Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Primer/Sealer for cat urine & cigarette smoke I've used Zinsser Bin Oil-based primer on 2 separate occassions and both times it has performed beautifully!! The first was a complete remodel of a 2500 sq ft house that had about 9 cats living there. We had to cut out some of the subfloor it was so badly saturated with cat urine. However, we coated the baseboards, walls and pretty much everything else with 2 coats of oil-based zinsser (1 coat probably would have done the trick, but we wanted to make sure the smell was gone). No more cat urine smell - it was amazing. The other occassion was repainting several rooms in a home that was occupied by a heavy smoker (ie. heavy deposits on the walls). We tried to clean the gunk off the walls the best we could with several cleaners because we didn't believe that zinsser would seal it and it would bleed through. However, much to our amazement, 1 coat of zinsser sealed it right up and we painted over it and the smoke smell was gone too. I would use Kilz 2 for basic priming/sealing but if you need a really good sealant - zinsser bin is the way to go!

Tried using water based primer first and the tannins kept bleeding through giving a yellow stain. Tried this oil based primer, it worked beautifully! I did apply with a roller and when dry it was rough, took hand sander and 220 sandpaper and sanded the primer prior to paint. Voila, it sanded great and ended up nice and smooth. Do give it overnight to dry before sanding, made a huge difference. Paint went on well and thanks to this primer cabinets are bright white and beautiful!

I’ve used this product several times and it is like the Swiss Army knife of primers: - Inexpensive compared to other primers. - Low odor when compared to other oil based paints/primers. - No pre-sanding required (Although I do scuff painted surfaces with a ScotchBrite pad.) - Can prime over latex or oil. - Can topcoat with latex or oil. - Dries fast. - Durable. If it doesn’t work for you, you are either using the wrong product for the application or are applying it wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is one strong primer I needed to cover nicotine smell and hazards infused by previous tenants' smoking. It sure seems to cover the hazards, as well as hides concentrated wall colors nicely.... But the smell is overpowering!! It is advisable to prime a dwelling while empty. The smell is similar to the old oil-based paints (lacquer?). Paint thinner should be by your side at all times, as well, to wipe any drops quickly, to wash any smudge off your body, and keep your brushes from drying up. The primer dries up to a nice off-white matte finish. On colored surfaces, a bit of color is showing through after one layer of primer. It definitely needs a latex paint over. Nicely prepares the surface, though!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Stinky! I live in a 60 year old house and needed to cover old, dark paint. I wasn't sure what kind of paint it was (oil, or maybe even lead?). I bought this primer so that I could use latex paint. The primer worked well, but the smell was terrible and very strong! It almost made me sick. If you don't need a heavy-duty primer, I'd buy the odorless kind!

Can this be used as a drywall primer?
Asked by: Painter
Yes, our Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer is an excellent choice for priming drywall prior to painting. We recommend allowing the primer to dry for at least one hour prior to painting.

Will this cover OSB plywood that will hold an outside shed? It will be exposed to the elements.

Asked by: Clm
This is a primer, not a final coat of paint. That said, it is a good product that I have used often under a final coat of paint. It works well as a primer, for example for keeping bare wood oils or a previous paint/stain from bleeding through to the new paint.

Do I have to paint over it or can I use it as a topcoat?
Asked by: BoatMan
Definitely not meant to be a top-coat. First, it's a flat sheen. Second, the coverage is not what you would expect from a top-coat, unless you apply multiple coats.

I am painting panelling. Is it better to use oil based primer or regular latex primer?
Asked by: Max
if I'm applying primer to anything other than existing latex wall paint, I always prefer an oil-base. In my experience, oil-base primers adhere much better than water-based primers, especially to slicker/smoother surfaces, even tho they can be a little tougher to work with. Keep in mind that you may need 2 coats of primer to make sure that you'll have good coverage when you apply your finish layer/s. Also, it's VERY important to make sure that you thoroughly prep whatever surface that you're priming. It needs to be cleaned well and in the case of paneling, a de-glosser (after the paneling is cleaned and before the primer) will also help to ensure that you have good coverage and adherence.

i am refinishing a floor that has been patched with plywood so i am planning on using oil-based floor paint. Is this cover stain a good primer to use first?
Asked by: holly
Happy to help Holly. Zinsser Cover Stain Oil Based Primer is not suitable for application to floors, it is not designed for floor application. An excellent choice for painting flooring is Rust-Oleum Home Floor Coating System. Home is an extremely durable, easy to use, revolutionary technology that allows you to coat over a wide variety of substrates inside the home without stripping, sanding or priming. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Home-1-qt-Black-Interior-Floor-Base-Matte-Clear-Coating-Kit-363722/313143274 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

Will this work on vinyl shutters?
Asked by: Angela
Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain works great on vinyl surfaces, Angela. We recommend making sure the surface is cleaned, dry, and sound before applying the product. You can allow it to dry for 45 minutes and then apply a water or oil based top coat to finish the application. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1
