I had to retire my old Brinkmann off set smoker, so I thought I would try a vertical smoker. After researching many units, I purchased this one after it went on sale for $166. Assembly was fairly easy, but did take longer than the fifteen minutes stated in the owner's manual. The first test run was not so good, as I could not get the temperature under 350 degrees, not at all good for slow smoking. So I installed insulating gaskets around the doors. The second test was much more successful. I was easily able to maintain the temperature at 200 degrees. I have now used it several times, and I am quite satisfied with the unit. Cleanup is incredibly easy with the slide out ash tray. Teamed up with my 5 burner Dyna Glo grill, which I also purchased at Home Depot, I now have what I have dubbed my "Dynamic Dyna Glo Duo" for outdoor cooking.

This is a good smoker for the $$, but the only issue with this model is the exhaust vent, before you assemble it to the smoker just take a look at it when the vent is closed all the way. The gaps in the exhaust vent are a issue, all the way closed is like 1/4 to 1/3 open. Also there is no water pan, only a wood chip smoker box that rests above the fire. If that exhaust truly closed all the way this smoker would be 5 stars all day long.

I have had this smoker for about two years and I am still in love with it! it is just the right size and I like that I can arrange the racks to accommodate large roasts or slabs of ribs. Adding charcoal during the smoking process is not a breeze, but it is doable with a good grade of BBQ gloves and a place to set the charcoal holder. I did purchase a cover - but i couldn't find an actual Dyna-Glo cover. I would by this item again.

Rated 4 de 5 de par Easy to Assemble, Works great - Would be perfect with a few updates [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This smoker was easy to assemble and does the job just fine. It has plenty of shelf space on the adjustable racks to fit pretty much whatever you want to smoke (within certain limits of course as this is for home use). I think its a good value at $199. The firebox sits on a heavy duty rack that is above an ash tray. both slide out for access but the firebox will fall down if you slide it out far enough to add more charcoal. They should have used a rolling system or included top and bottom rack holders to avoid this. You CAN get it out far enough to pour coals in without it falling but you really have to be careful not to miss. The wood chip tray is large enough to hold a decent amount of wood but the cover is not uniform and does not sit properly on top of the tray. The tray itself is held up by two rack holders (one on each side) that are pegged into the side wall of the unit (like the meat racks) but you have to manipulate the tray into position which isn't fun when the unit is hot. The tray never seems to want to connect with both sides, it's either one or the other. Of course, with practice, you'll have better luck over time. The meat racks are good, they're not heavy duty but they'll each hold up to 25 pounds of food. They're also adjustable so you can space them out however you need to each time. Mine came with a defective thermometer but one call into Customer Service and a new on is on the way. For this test I installed an old gauge that was attached to another grill and it worked fine. Overall this smoker looks good and has good size. It works well and does the job just fine. My biggest concern is that the wood tray's coating peeled off after the initial seasoning (the first heating of the unit without any food in it). I posted a picture of that, its a little disturbing to think that this stuff could have been attached to my food. Always season your grills and smokers!!

Rated 5 de 5 de par Really excited [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This being my first smoker, I am incredibly excited to set it up and put it to use. I already have set aside a slab of beef brisket, turkey legs, salmon, beef ribs, you name it! The craftsmanship seems to be top notch and the instructions are pretty straight forward. I am currently doing research to what charcoal briquettes are popular for smoking meats, as well as which wood chips are ideal for the meats I intend to smoke. I will be updating this review with photos of my finished meats!

Rated 5 de 5 de par Love it, great smoker! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] So the smoker arrives in a series of boxes with the doors attached, but all the handles, legs, air inlet slides and topper off and requiring assembly. Assembly is easy and goes quickly. Fully assembled, the smoker weighs about 50lbs and can be easily carried around by its handles. My daughter said it reminded her of Thomas the Train and we had fun assembling it together. Cooking on this smoker is more art than science, but that's really the very nature of a charcoal smoker. I used hardwood, natural charcoal, but I may move to briquettes to help maintain a consistent temp over a longer period of time. Temp adjustment is best done in the fire box. The side, air inlet vents provide the most dramatic changes in temp. The first time you use the smoker, have a Phillips handy to re-adjust the slide screws as their tensions will change after they heat up. You'll have to loosen them up a bit to make easy adjustments as you cook. Additionally, you can adjust the latch tension on the door. The majority of the adjustment range leaves the door slightly cracked open, providing an additional air entry point at the fire box. I found this worked well for the fine temperature adjustments (1-2deg). Once I got my coals set and chalky, I mostly used the door latch adjustment to maintain temp. The coal basket is wire, so your grill tongs will work great for pulling it out of the fire box to add more coals. Don't add too much, or you'll overheat your smoke box and burn up your soaked wood chips in the chip box. The chip box mount can be a bit tricky. It's a wire rack where the chip box has wings that wrap around the sides of the wire rack. It's a tight fit, so you've got to get your hand in there a bit. Wear a GOOD potholder or glove. It's HOT! The good thing is that you can refill both the coals and wood chips without opening the top door. Here's a trick I learned. Put a cookie sheet or flat pan on the bottommost rack. Not only will it help catch the drippings and keep them out of your fire or wood chips, but it will also help to better separate your food from the fire box, and insulate a bit keeping the heat in and ashes somewhat out. If you find that you stoked the fire too much, close down all the vents and tighten down the door on the fire box to cool it down. You can also adjust the door latches up top to open the smoke box up a bit and exit some heat. Start your fire early and get your temp set up and steady before you add your chips and food. It takes some practice to get the temperature regulation just right. The thermometer has an indicator as to the ideal range you want. Get it steady in this range (takes an hour or so), then add your food. Most things will take 4-6 hours to cook, so start early. And get a good, digital meat thermometer that you can leave in to monitor your progress. Remember to prepare your rub the night before and chill your meat overnight. You want it going on cold so it comes up to cooking temp slowly. Also, don't overdo it on the chips. It'll make PLENTY of smoke. Just take it easy and be patient. I recommend this smoker because it really teaches you HOW to smoke. It's easy once you get the basics down and has the adjustments necessary to get it just right. It's well made, but not over-complicated. Great value, great smoker.

Rated 3 de 5 de par Looks Nice, Too Hot [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It took me about an hour to assemble this. The entire body is made of thin sheet metal, including the legs. Fasteners are mostly phillips screws. There was a fair amount of misalignment in many of the pieces, and the quality is average. There are gaps in the doors and the hinges do not line up very well. The wood chip box did not fit the rack - it was spaced too wide. I had to 'modify' it with a hammer. I followed the instructions to season the smoker, making sure I used "at least 4lbs" of charcoal as recommended. I used standard Royal Oak briquettes. The temperature climbed to 350 degrees, and nothing I did would make it decrease. Typically this happens when there is too much oxygen, and I suspect the gaps in the door were the cause. I was eventually able to get the temps down to a reasonable level by using a lot less charcoal, but then it wouldn't burn long enough. I eventually gave up. I think the doors need to be fixed or sealed, or the unit needs a water box. While I was checking the manual for help, I saw that it says that the smoker has parts that have lead in them and other chemicals too. I'm not sure why this product would have that, if it is intended for food.

Rated 5 de 5 de par very good for the price Easy to put together, and does a good job, on the few things I have found the time to smoke so far. I have done Salmon 2 or 3 times , and it has came out great. The only thing I done like is that the charcoal basket sits on a raise bracket and does not lock into a slot. (you have to be careful when you pull it out to add charcoal or it could fall on your feet)
