Rated 4 de 5 de par Great product but don't order it online here I've been using this model for almost 6 years by now and I had to purchase one again due to a cross country move. The product is still as good as the old one but homedepot shipping did a pretty bad job packaging it, i.e. not at all. It arrived in its original box and the box was torn on one side. The UPS guy had to tape it to make sure parts don't fall out (Thanks!). Still the angle connector pieces received significant damage but luckily was "fixable" due to metallic malleability. If you want to use this product, buy it/pick it up in store! also it could be a pain to assemble the first time due to machining imprecision so go get a friend!

Rated 2 de 5 de par Do not hold 4,000 lbs as advertised - not even close The assembly of this product was easy. Only needed a hammer to assist in locking the pieces together. The frame is solid and well made. However, the shelves are the worst I've ever seen. The are made of glued saw dust. I put about 250 lbs or less of ammunition on each shelf. After two weeks, they are all failing - I foolishly purchased 5 at one time. They are all bowed down and the shape has set permanently. One slid off the edge and broke already. I can tell that they are all going to snap eventually. So if you are planning on buying it, make sure to only put 100 lbs or less on each shelf. I'll see what the company is going to do about this.

Rated 4 de 5 de par Good Value...sturdy and easy to assemble I dont know about 4000 lbs but it does hold all the paint cans and other assorted containers that I had stacked in the garage. It took maybe 30-40 minutes to assemble completely, just make sure you have a mallet or a hammer to tap connections in place. The frame feels solid, so do the boards but not as solid. They're made of mdf with some kind of coating. At some point I'll probably make some new ones out of plywood. Other that that its a good value for the price. WAY nicer than alot of the plastic shelf units out there. One last thing, stack the heavy stuff towards the bottom and the lighter stuff towards the top just as a safety precaution.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Solid Performance Perfect for the garage. These shelves are sized perfectly and the 18" depth stands out of the way, while loading all that it has to to clean up the garage. Strength is simply NOT an issue. The particle-board bases are held in a ledge along the entire edge of each shelf. Even with multiple one-gallon paint cans it has held up well. Watch yourself during installation however. The problem is that the assembly is SO SIMPLE that you stop paying attention. Be careful to keep the rails in the correct orientation as you assemble. Beating them back apart might be time consuming and annoyingly embarrassing... had I done that (blush).

Rated 3 de 5 de par Practical, But Be Gentle I bought two of these units for an entertainment system. It looks great in my family room. I have my 60" flat screen tv and nearly 250lbs of books on these sturdy units. What I don't like about them is that when I took the boxes out of the car, I accidentally dropped one. I later found that two of the cork board shelves cracked. When I placed one in the shelf frame, it completely broke in three parts. Thus, be very, very, very gentle when moving the boxes, removing the shelves and placing them in the frame. Otherwise this unit is practical, looks great, is customizable, and very easy to put together (once you read the instructions)!

Rated 1 de 5 de par So sad and bad A few years ago the Edsal product you found in Home Depot was much better: Heavier steel, much better painted steel parts, accurate dimensions, thicker shelves. Now the Hispanic fellow I hired to help me put several sets of the current product together said, "Why did you buy this cheap stuff?" Today's product is made of thinner steel (so some of the ends of the cross beams come out of the package bent, requiring to be straighten before installation) and are poorly painted. But here is what made me gag the most: In one package, 4 of the 20 cross beams were about 1/2" shorter than the rest! Can you imagine how long it took us to find out why things were not square and the shelves couldn't fit?

Rated 1 de 5 de par I bought the 72" and 60" shelving units. After putting the larger one 3/4 of the way together, I ... I bought the 72" and 60" shelving units. After putting the larger one 3/4 of the way together, I saw that one shorter bar had 2 grommets/pins falling out of their metal mooring as per manufacturing defect. It would not support the board on that side and fell on the floor. When I examined the 60" shelving out of the box, there was 1 grommet/pin defective. One of the particle boards had a corner broken off as well. The units are re-packed [a pain to do!] and headed back to the point of purchase. Both boxes are heavy and bulky, so their movement is not easy. I'm disappointed in the quality of this shelving.

Rated 3 de 5 de par Heavy-Duty Shelving Unit The steel framework itself is very impressive, the individual shelves themselves are clearly the weak point of this system. Total system support is listed at 4,000 lbs, suggesting that each shelf would need to hold about 800 lbs of material. However, if I as a 200 lb man attempt to put my weight on any individual shelf, it buckles severely and I had a crack form in one corner of the shelf. System assembles rapidly, and securely. As mentioned, the steel frame itself is of excellent quality, but I would be astonished if I ever manage to get anywhere near 4,000 lbs onto this system without the shelves all collapsing. I wish I could rate the Quality of the shelves and the Quality of the frame separate. The frame would get a 5-star rating. The shelves a 2-star rating.

are the shelves steel or wood composite

Posée par: none
The inlays for the shelving unit are wood composite so if you have moisture issues like we do, I would suggest spraying them with some sort of coating to resist moisture. The shelves sit up off the floor so they would not come into direct contact unless there were flooding. The rest of the unit is metal.

What is the height each shelf?

Posée par: Paminflorida
The metal horizontal supports are each just over 2" tall. (2 1/16" tall to be exact.) The vertical keyhole slots are each 1.5" apart. Each shelf uses 2 vertically adjacent keyholes for support. You can adjust pretty much anywhere within those constraints. (Note, even though this is admittedly unusual, you shouldn't do assemblies that are inherently unstable. For example, don't put all the shelves near the top leaving long, gangly "legs" for support. The shelf works best when there is a (close to) top shelf, a (close to) bottom shelf, and several (close to) evenly spaced shelves in the middle.)

If I buy two of these, is it possible to build them horizontal (bench style) and have them stacked?

Posée par: Ky78
Each unit is 36" high pieces and so, in the package you have 8 uprights at 36" tall. To get the full 72" height you have to attach one 36" to the top of another 36" upright with a special bracket they have included. Keep in mind, I had to pound it pretty significantly with a hammer to get the uprights into that bracket. Their instructions are a bit lacking on clarity. Now for me, I actually put together a full 72" high rack and then on top of that, I added a 36" section to go higher. And to make sure it was secure, I screwed it to the wall. This worked out great, especially if the items your putting on them are not too heavy. If your going to fill the rack to its 800 pound per shelf capacity, then I would not advise doing the setup like I did. One more thing to know about these units, the boards (in my opinion) are very susceptible to being damaged easy and I feel rather brittle. They should have put 3/4" particle boards on each shelf. I would gladly have paid more to have that done. If these break, I will be replacing them with 3/4" particle boards. Or, even better, use Plywood. The picture is actually a 48w x 24d x 72h storage rack. I then bought a second package and used half of it to add to the top of this to utilize high up the wall in the garage. Now I just need a 36w shelf to go next to it.

does anyone else have a problem with the shelf bowing in middle. There is no where near 800 pounds on the shelf and almost popping out of the rail edging?
Posée par: me
I store "Plastic Storage" containers on the shelves with no problems. if one has a problem with deflection, try a small, thin metal 3/4" or 1" angle or two under the shelf material or glue or fasten a couple of 3/4" thk. x 1" hardwood reinforcers to the underside of the shelf material (holding it in from the edge of the "particle board" so as not to interfere with the rail edge support or replace the shelf material with "stronger" material like plywood or a second layer of "particle board" or ???? slightly smaller than the size of manufacturer's shelf material, to allow the bearing on the rail edge support.

Can these really hold 4000lbs?

I am considering storing metal objects that weight a lot on these, think they will hold up? (The metal framing and the wooden shelving)?
Posée par: FSCT
I do not think so. They are very flimsy units.

If I try to lift this unit to move it, will it fall apart? When I was putting it together, I had to push the heads down into the slots. But they don't lock in place. Even if you tap it with a rubber mallet. Many times when I tried to add another part while assembling, it would throw another part out of alignment and it would pop up and fall off. I am afraid if I lift or pull on the unit to drag it, it will collapse like a house of cards. Thank you.
Posée par: Matthew
To lift it without possibility of anything coming apart, hold and lift by the lower section of shelving unit?s LEGS, not by the upper section of the legs and not by the shelf support bars. It is easy to assemble and is easy to disassemble.

Will 6 fit in a car trunk?

Posée par: MPB1
Depends on the car. The packaging is a little bigger than the dimensions of the footprint of the shelf. So if you buy the 72x48x18, it will be approx 48 x 18 inches rectangle and 6 or 7 inches high if i remember correctly. The poles are actually in two pieces that fit together. If you can put the seats down you could probably stack them three and three for a total of six. I'd also recommend stacking the horizontally across the back <-------> so if you hit the breaks they don't fly out your back window. They are pretty heavy.

Can I add more shelves by buying an additional unit?

Posée par: FixIt
Yes, but be very careful NOT to EXCEED the overall capacity of the single shelving unit.
