Rated 5 de 5 de par Flawless Transfer of Power We had a 17K unit installed in the spring of 2011, and were extremely satisfied with the automatic back-up power this unit provided the first time we lost power in June, 2011. There is a few second delay between loosing power and the unit switching on, but after the delay it performed flawlessly. We were just sitting down to dinner when we lost power, and we were able to continue our evening without any interruption. The secret to complete satisfaction is to prepare a detailed diagrams of your circuits before installation, so the installers will activate those circuits that are most important to you. When we lost power, the generator maintained power to all the areas we rely on, including lights, central AC, water heater, refrigerators, microwave etc. Do your homework before installation, and you will achieve a level of comfort & peace-of-mind worth far more than the cost of this unit.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Fighting fires I installed one of the generac 17K natural gas generators for one of our mountain customers and recently we had wildfires , this customers well pump was one of the items on the switch box. They were forced to evacuate but before they left they put out sprinklers on their house and everywhere on the lawn, three days later they went back after the evacuation order was lifted not knowing if they still had a house, the house was still there and the generator was happily running along , their house was saved , they lost no food in the freezer,I see that as a very successful product that did what is was supposed to do even under very extreme conditions , I would recommend this product to anyone.

Rated 1 de 5 de par We purchased this home generator in April 2012. The first time it needed to bemused was this week and the motor is bad We purchased this product in April 2012 since we lose power often and for long periods of time and we have elderly parents to care for. Hurricane sandy just hit us three days ago generator came on ran for 6 hrs and broke. It owners a new motor this is a piece of junk that is extremely expensive. It was total with installation $10000 and it is of unreasonable to want it to work ! They want to repair it which is totally unreasonable! For that money and inconvenience a new one better be installed! We were totally unprepared for our power outage because of generac. We had yo go back to the$400 portable one which worked fine! BEWARE!

Rated 5 de 5 de par Smart Purchase Just received and had installed weeks ago. Great value for the peace of mind of not having to worry about losing power. Wish I had done it years ago. We have lost power and nearly froze. Our basement has flooded with no power for the sump pump. We have had standing generators that are hard to start and don't always start when you need them. Now I don't have to worry even if I am away from home. I highly recommend it.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Excellent product - See Below The Generac 17kw is fabulous. It will power 16 circuits in my house (200 amp panel). I have ran the A/C, stove, microwave, outdoor lighting, 2 tv's, a computer, refrigerator and all downstairs lighting, upstairs lighting and a hair drier all at once with no noticable effect on the ability to run anything. All 16 circuits powered beautifully at once. Unit also has an external plug (15 amp) that may be of use and may be used by neighbor to help them out. Noise level is great. It is located about 15 feet from my living room and you can hardly hear it with the tv on. I was expecting it to turn on this past saturday and had to mute the tv to verify it was running. It sounds about as loud as a mower 3 to 4 doors down. THat's not bad at all. Neighbors can hardly hear it. SUper product. Beware...Track your usage as my installer said that Generac is very picky when it comes to warranty claims. Be sure to keep all receipts for servicing etc. and a run log. Installation of the transfer switch is definitely NOT a DIY project. My locality requires electrical and gas inspections after installation and before unit is fired up. A good install company will include all permits in installation costs. Depending on your circumstances and property (how far lines have to be ran etc.) it would not be beyond expectation to expect install costs for this generator to run from $7000 to $8400 (including generator costs) depending on your circumstances. If more, get a second quote (I'd advise that anyway). This range is for NG. propane tanks to be sure will add additional costs. Expect the 20KW generator to run around $1-$1.2K more (including the generator). Ask about any additional extension on the manf warranty from your install company. Mine offered an additional year parts and labor (from 2 to 3 years). Do your research for your area. But this is a super great product!!! It is costing about $3-$4 per month to exercise each week. My house is about 2100 sq ft. It cost about $20-$30 per day to operate during an outage. This is certainly cheaper than a portable. If you are in an earth quake zone you should consider propane backup if generator will be powered with NG. If gas lines are damaged you will have a backup fuel source). Hope this helps. These are answers to questions I had going in. Kaos

Rated 5 de 5 de par Generac We have had these generators installed at multiple tower sites for years. All of ours are powered by propane - not natural gas. The breaker box that comes with these units are first class and the generator kicks in at every power loss as well as brown outs (where power level is low) when they occur - which in the boonies of Louisiana are very often. Power (or lack thereof) has not been a problem since the installation if these Generac generators. They do all that is stated and have never failed to come through with power when needed. They are quiet running, not ugly and DEPENDABLE. I would highly suggest hiring a professional to install these generators since you want this to work when the power goes out :-) Not only are you going to have to decide what needs to be powered when your power goes out, but you are going to have to tie this in to your current electrical. If everything is not right - - you will be sending power generated by your generator back down the line where the power company will be working. It is very possible to electrocute those guys working on what they thought was a "dead" line. Hire professional help!

Rated 5 de 5 de par Product Excellence! This product was a hit from day one. It was easy to install and extremely easy to program. Hooking it up to the house gas, with a port for Propane as redundancy worked well.

What is energy source that the generator uses? Gasoline? Diesel? Gaz? And what quantity/ hour?

Posée par: Cheick
The 17kW automatic standby generator is designed to be run off of natural gas supplied by a utility line, or propane supplied by tank. The unit will come from factory set for natural gas, but can be easily converted to propane during installation. The volume and pressure required for the 20kW unit utilizing natural gas is 294,000 BTU/hr with 5-7” of water column, and if utilizing propane is 267,120 BTU/hr with 10-12” of water column.

what size gas generator do i need

Posée par: markoutman
The real question is,"what do you want to keep powered when the electricity goes out?" I wanted to keep the furnace, air conditioning, lights, refrigerators and freezers running and a tv and I went with the 17 KW generator. I left out my whirlpool and some lights for a few rooms in my house. If you want everything protected I would advise using generac's sizing guide to estimate the wattage of all your home devices and work from there.

Does the unit have a block heater or how does it start in real cold weather

Posée par: Frank
Generac focuses more on keeping your battery warm and has a battery warmer kit for areas that have frequent below 32 degree weather. It comes with a warmer and an automatic thermostat

Is it alright to put plants in pots on top of our Generac 17,000 watt standby generator (Model 5873)?

Posée par: Nadine
I would personally refrain from putting plants on top of the generator. If you were gone and the generator needed to run it would definitely kill your plants. The mixture of dirt and water around an expensive unit just isn't recommended. This could become a maintenance headache for your unit and result in costly repairs. I wouldn't do it.

How big is the composite pad that comes with it?

Posée par: Fredbob
The composite mounting pad on the 17kW has a length of approximately 48 inches, a width of approximately 25 inches, and a height of approximately 2 inches. The composite mounting pad is part of the enclosure and can be placed directly onto a bed of pea gravel or a concrete slab for proper installation of the unit.

I would like to have a 17,000 Watt Standby Generator installed how far from my house does it need to be

Posée par: rekcc
If you use the Home Depot website and have the time to return there; bring up the 17 KW Generator WITH the 100 Amp "EZ Switch" transfer switch. (Model 5873) Just by clicking on the ad for the same. To the right of the picture of the generator you should see "Read All Q&A". If you click on that it will bring up all of the questions & answers on this particular unit BUT more importantly is the picture in the margin at the very top. If you click on that it will enlarge and you will see the "Installation Guidelines" provided by Generac for ALL of their Air Cooled Residential Stand By Generators rated 8 KW - 20 KW. So, you could change your mind on which generator - within this lineup - and the installation guidelines will "currently" remain the same. NOW, if you live in an area which enforces stricter installation guidelines, then those guidelines will override those provided by Generac. The stricter of the two would be your guidelines. In case you need the basic guidelines here and now; this generator - with its backside toward your structure - needs to be a minimum of 18" from that structure. (The air intake is in the back and needs to be kept clear, so keep this in mind as well.) There should be no windows or openings in the wall within 5' of any point on the generator. Off the left and right ends of the generator there should be 3' of clearance with 3' clearance in front as well. (The exhaust exits the left end of the cabinet, the battery is located in the right end of the cabinet and the front panel comes off for you to provide service to your generator. So heated exhaust, vented battery charging and work space.) There is a 5' minimum clearance to any overhang as well. These guidelines have been updated in the past and may be updated in the future. Your local building code enforcement may have stricter guidelines. They were created as proactive measures to protect owners from any engine fire or exhaust hazards. Hope this helps.
