Rated 5 de 5 de par Good for me I am a 25 year old elementary school teacher whose husband is currently deployed. I'm mildly handy, in that I can use a drill and mow the lawn, but as soon as you start asking me to mix concrete and dig even holes we are going to have problems. I came home one afternoon to find our mailbox on its side and, being that I couldn't let it wait until hubs gets home, I set out to Home Depot to figure out my options. I was able to put this post up, with ease, on my own. It was not in the 10 minutes that everyone else described - but we can chalk that up to my "mild handiness". It is strong, sturdy, maybe a little tall, but will be sufficient as a mail box.

I would recommend it with the caveat that you do NOT follow the installation instructions....unless your ground is harder than a rock (or a cedar pole). I had to take the entire thing apart because the metal stake just got pushed farther into the ground rather than going into the cedar pole. I placed the cedar pole against the side of my house, whacked the stake into the cedar pole and THEN whacked the pole+stake combo into the ground...worked great. Now, if it doesn't get eaten by ants or weed-whacked to death in under 5 yrs, I'll be thrilled. Way cheaper than the alternatives, which still required a pressure-treated 4x4, and I like the look.

Rated 3 de 5 de par wobbly It was easy to install, but I found the post wobbly and had to drive stakes in the ground along the sides of the post to secure it to my liking. The spike was definitely not loose in the ground, so I think the spike's fit with the cedar post is the issue. There should be a screw or two which secures the post to the spike. Maybe this is in the deluxe model which I wasn't aware of. If so spend the extra money. I also had to plane the joint of the cross member to get it as straight as I wanted. This is a nit since I'm a perfectionist and probably nobody would have noticed it. On the positive side, it looks and smells great. Someone walking by confirmed this Better than a pressure treated post.

Rated 4 de 5 de par Better then expected I read some reviews before buying this and expected it to be kind of flimsy. It's not really. It is difficult to get it level and straight. Because the metal post that you beat into the ground first doesn't give you much length to work with when leveling. We pounded it in with a rubber mallet and even though it seemed level it was hard because there was only about 6 or 8 inches sticking up out of the ground once it was in. When we put the cedar post over the metal spike it turned out to be leaning a little. Otherwise looks good. Really fast to install. About 10 minutes.

Rated 3 de 5 de par We'll see It went into the ground fairly easily, but as stated in other reviews, it does wobble. Don't think this is an issue as our mailbox is not set at the curb. The steel v shaped post is pounded about 18" into the ground with a rubber mallet. Then, the cedar post which is pre-drilled, is pounded down on the v shaped until this is flush with the ground. One of the comments suggested digging it out, and resetting it into concrete. I guess that might work o.k. to make the metal pole firm into the ground. It is not possible to set the wood post into the ground as the post is not long enough to sink into the ground.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Ugly rough cut unfinished cedar The posts are made of ugly, rough cut, saw blade marked non sanded, non planed cedar posts. No wonder the product wan not on display at the store. I live too far away to hassle with a return so I tried to sand the posts smooth. Forgetaboutit! Sanding would take forever. My planer made the post real nice and smooth like I expected it to be out of the box. Now, it looks like a finished board of wood and it will not attract moisture and mold anymore. They should plane the posts at the factory, especially for the price. If you really want cedar and you have a planer and you are not afraid to use it, you can buy it. otherwise, STAY AWAY!

Rated 2 de 5 de par Terrible quality My current mailbox post is falling apart and shaking during high wind, so decided to replace it with something similar. After googling and researching found this post and decided to order. When it arrived in half-damaged box, I wasn't happy already. But this is Home Depot fault for bad packaging. Now to the post -- I don't know why, but when I took it out of the box, there was a lot of dust (see picture). Two out of four sides of the post weren't sanded properly and look just ugly. WHY? Was it hard? I can sand it myself, I can even paint it to hide ugliness of red/white wood. But what's the point of paying triple price of standard 4x4 post if I need to do it myself? I would say avoid.

Rated 4 de 5 de par Good materials which allowed us to contruct a decent stand for 3 mailboxes. Decent quality raw materials. I used two with a heavy deck board spanning them. I painted everthing white. Natural wood left alone just turns grey. The big selling point is that you don't need concrete. The metal spikes work reasonable well. I am subtracting points for the ridiculously small included mailbox mounting board. Our 3 boxes have inside dimensions of 21"x8". The little board that comes with the package is only 12" by 5 & 3/4. Also the included screws were just regular philips screws. I used brass Power Pro Star drive screws which are significantly superior for driving screws into heavy wood.

I am having trouble securing the cross arm to the post using the 2 screws provided. After attaching the mailbox, I realized the screws are pulling out of the post. Any suggestions?
Posée par: jatmie
Remove the mailbox. Fill each of the screw holes with multiple softwood toothpicks (These are the flat-sided toothpicks.). Stuff the toothpicks in place very tightly. Break off each toothpick as close the cross arm top surface as possible. When each hole is stuffed tight, use a medium sized hammer to tap the top stubs of the toothpicks very tightly and evenly into place. Then, reinstall the the cross arm by slowly and carefully inserting the installation screws. Tighten the screws to be hand-tight. Do not over tighten. The screws will increase the pressure in the in the screw hole thereby securing the mailbox. This is a cabinet makers trick I used on many projects to tighten wood parts to each other. Good luck.

Can I use a ground anchor post in conjunction with the drive in post that is supplied for more stability!
Posée par: JM
The drive in post that is supplied is not very stable in my opinion. I even added some quick cement and it still is not as stable as I had hoped for. I would try that ground anchor post by itself. When I have to redo mine, I would get a longer post, make a bigger hole and add cement like they do for fence posts.

A small sledge hammer to put stake in ground and post on stake. Then a screw driver or drill to install wood together and put mail box on.

Is this a universal post? Can I use it with a Architectural Mailbox brand size large (also sold at Home Depot) and if so do I use the Gibraltar or Architectural universal mounting bracket?
Posée par: Zak
This unit is compatible with many Gibraltar post-mount mailboxes like the GMB505B01 or GMB515B01.
