Rated 5 de 5 de par Very Happy with the lights I removed the old 4'X8' light box with fluorescent tube lights in our kitchen and replaced it with 6 Halo 4" recessed lights. The installation of the lights was not difficult. I would recommend practicing connections and clips one time before installation while it's still on the ground. Things seem order of magnitude harder when you are working on the ceiling with your neck bent backwards. The trick with clips is; push firmly flat from inside towards the housing and then push up with a flat head screw driver; very easy once you get the hang of it.

Rated 4 de 5 de par Perfect Fit I used this to replace old can in bathroom shower stall. I was surprised 4 inch water tight housings weren't available at local HD store so I ordered on-line and had it delivered to store. That was very convenient. The unit itself installed very easily. The clips were somewhat difficult yo set in place with my finger so I used a screwdriver to set in place by pushing up on the clip and once I got the first one the others were a breeze. Used a Halo LED light/trim kit which went in very easily as well and put in dimmer. Very happy with results. Great DIY'er project.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Happy customer I put 6 of these in my home office ceiling, along with Commercial Electric LED lights (3 fixed, 3 movable). Installation was pretty straightforward, once I got the technique for pushing the clips into place. Following the directions, pushing the clip flat against the can wall first, then using a screw driver, all it took was a modest tap from my other palm to push the clip up and locked into place. I could see that if you pushed too hard you might tear the aluminum. The quick-connect clips on the box was also quite handy, time-saver, for attaching wires. I did have access above, so for some of the cans it was easier to complete the wiring in the attic. A couple were too tight for above access, and was pretty easy from below.

Rated 2 de 5 de par Not the best design As others have pointed out, installation of this product is not as easy as it should be. After installing three of them, I found that the aluminum above the clips tends to bend outward and prevents you from pushing up (from the inside) the clip (which pushes the clip down on the outside). I had to pull one unit out and then bend the aluminum housing inward so the clip would slide up and go outside the housing. One clip ended up ripping the aluminum weakening the grip on the drywall. Luckily, I was putting these in a soffit in our kitchen which had access (of sorts) from our attic. I ended up using foam to seal the holes that were not really closed off by the foam rubber that just seems to get in the way of installation and does little to seal the holes.

Works with a number of 4" trims, but I recommend getting one of each to test before committing to a bunch. I like the built-in NM cable retainers and the easy to use connectors. Primary issues were 1) sealing tape was not applied very accurately (but was relatively easy to reposition) and 2) they were jammed in the box carelessly, so there were a couple dents. However, it's aluminum, so it's easy to coax back into shape, and they were easy to modify for thick ceilings (shorten the retaining clips) with tight clearances (remove the strap). Seen other people whine about them being 'flimsy' -- if you have to beat on them you're doing it wrong.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Recessed lighting Installed these with no problems. I would recommend you understand how the installation is suppose to work. After having a clear understanding, the installation is easy. My biggest problem was having to order the IC rated housings. It seems to me it would make more sense for Home Depot to carry in stock, the IC rated housings rather than the non-IC for remodel or old work installation. Most remodel homes have insulation already installed in them so the IC rated is needed.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Terrible unit by Halo. Great delivery service and pricing from Home Depot I'm going to return the majority of my order. I should have listened to one of the 2 reviews . The flange on the canister is the thinnest aluminum you will find. These are extremely difficult to install when you have preexisting insulation in place. It should be easy since this model is a remodeling model. The problem is the canister is attached to the connection box with a thin flexible piece of metal which will bend when trying to get the unit into the ceiling. Almost impossible to get the housing clips to attach to the drywall. I had to place plywood blocking above the drywall and screw the canister into the block (only way to get it to sit neatly against the ceiling. Amazing what is put out in the market.

Rated 3 de 5 de par Very difficult to install the first time in 5/8" drywall. The cans are well built and the electrical connections really good, but the clips are a real pain. Ended up finally finding a tip on the internet, and basically pushed the can up to the drywall, flattened the clip to the side on the can as much as possible and then used a screwdriver and a hammer to pound the clips into place. Worked like a charm.

The Halo H995RICAT remodel housing is IC (insulation contact) rated for direct contact with insulation and it is AT (Air-Tite) rated to meet restricted airflow building code requirements.

What thickness ceiling do these work with?

We have an older house with wood slats above the drywall, adding additional thickness. Will these cans work with a thicker ceiling?

I have a 3/4" wood T&G with 3/4" drywall above that. While the manufacturer may frown at this, I cut about 3/4" off the ends of the retaining clips with an angle grinder -- then they fit perfectly and locked into place.
