Rated 5 de 5 de par A little pricey, but great quality! The JD aerator is manufactured under contract by another brand available at HD. This one is significantly higher quality than the other. For example, the spoons are broken into 3 independently spinning sections, and (by necessity) there are two more supports from the weight tray to the spoon axle. This transmit the weight to the spoons in the center of the aerator better than the other brands. The aerator is very easy to assemble considering the JD assembly instructions are not always straightforward. The only issue I had was identifying which side was the "back" at the very beginning of the first step. Hint, the picture in the manual is misleading.

Rated 4 de 5 de par Great Product, not so great service from John Deere I poured through the reviews here and the other sites before purchasing this product. They were all really accurate: high quality steel, torn packaging, inaccurate and challenging (not impossible) assembly instructions. However, it works well, especially if you are working on a half acre plus piece of yard. My only complaint was that one of the transport bolts snapped during assembly with very little torque. I called John Deere, and rather than just shipping me the one bolt, they referred me to a dealer that is in another state over an hour away. For a product that costs over $400, I would think that they could ship me the one dollar part. Otherwise, it worked like a charm with just the fertilizer I was going to put on the lawn as a weight (about 150lbs).

Rated 4 de 5 de par Sturdy Quality; Poor Packaging & Poor Trouble Shooting Assistance Upon full assembly, the wheels were in the opposite direction. Tried to call John Deere affiliates for assistance. Unfortunately, some of the affiliates were far from amicable, and a formal complaint had to be filed with John Deere on one of them. Finally instructed by John Deere to call the manufacturer of the unit (Brinkly-Hardy). Their rep. (Brinkly-Hardy) was very helpful. E-mailed them photos of the problem and they were able to assist in the remediation of the problem. Overall great quality unit, but the shipped unit's packaging and the service from John Deere affiliates were far from stellar.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Quality piece This unit will last as long as you take care of it. It is heavy guage steel built to last a lifetime and worthy of the older Deere name. I have a 15,000 Sq ft lawn of clay soil. Was very impressed with the 3 to 2 1/2 inch plugs using 3 bags of quick cement for weight. I made 2 passes and had no problems turning, as the end tines are independent. You definetly get what you pay for on this one.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Aerator John Deere My yard is in terrible condition. Already this fine peice of equipment has gotten the grass to start to grow. It leaves nice big holes for seeds and water to sit in. This is the first peice like this that I have purchased from Home Depot and would highly recommend this to anyone in need of bettering their yard. It works like a charm. Thanks

Rated 5 de 5 de par Good Value Simple, well-instructed assembly; high quality materials. With basic care this aerator should easily last my lifetime and then some. Does a very good job of aerating even a somewhat lumpy lawn.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Worked as Advertised I bought this to aerate my lawn because the top soil is primarily clay based. The aerator had no problems punching through the grass into the soil. I placed about 100 pounds of weight on the tray and it penetrated about 2 inches deep. Using the instructions provided I was able to assemble the aerator in about an hour. The instructions were straight forward. I choose the John Deere brand because I wanted a top quality aerator. This aerator was more expensive than others but in the long run, over many years I think it will last.

Received this unit one month ago and I have now used it twice (right after receiving it and again today). Normally one would not need to use an aerator at this frequency but with the soil being so hard it seemed appropriate to do so this time around. The unit is very well made, nicely finished and easy to put together. This is my second tow-behind aerator. My first one pales in comparison to this John Deere unit. The metal for the JD is much thicker. The unit raises and lowers very easy, even when loaded with lots of weight, and pulls very easy. It does not bump around like my last unit and is hardly noticeable when towing in aerator mode or just towing to and from storage. Things to note: the large air filled tires, two extra gussets to help keep the axle rigid, easy lift for raising and lowering and heavy duty metal construction. Yes, it does cost more but it's worth every penny of the addition cost.

Can you back up with the tines engaged? I have read reviews of other brand aerators in which the single draw arm will bend when backing up.

Posée par: Bill J
I would not back up the aerator with the tines engaged.

Do the tines clog?

Seems that without some way to clear the tines as they rotate they would clog and not dig out plugs. Has this been a problem for anyone?
Posée par: Jim
They clog with dirt, which gets forced up and out and thrown on your lawn, right where you'd want little dirt clogs to be thrown. Those clogs will later dissolve with some rain and re-vitalize your lawn along with the newly spread fertilizers/seeds, whatever you've spread... I had a few rocks in a couple of tines, but it didn't prevent those tines from stabbing into the soil and doing their jobs. No issue. Just keep them clean for storage and they'll be ready for the next use.

What HP tractor is recomended to pull the 40 John Deere aerator?

Posée par: crabman
I own a John Deere 18.5HP LA100 Tractor and it pulls this Aerator without no problems at all. I don't know what a smaller, less powerful tractor would do because this is my first but the way the JD Aerator works I would think there would be no problems at all with something smaller.

Can I just buy a Brinly and paint it green to have the same exact aerator?

Can I just buy a Brinly and paint it green to have the same exact aerator?
Posée par: Kattmandu
Thank you for your question. Although the Brinly and John Deere aerators look similar, they are not the same. The John Deere aerator is made of a heavier gauge steel and has larger turf tires however, both are great, quality products. If there are any questions you need answered to help you with your decision between the two, please give us a call at 877-728-8224, we are happy to help!

What size of a garden tractor do you need to pull this aerator when it has the weight on it ?

I have a john deere La 118 is it big enough?
Posée par: Anonyme
An LA 118 should pull it no problem. I have a 15hp Husq that pulls it without any issues. I'd check transmission temp if your in a hot climatic zone. 1/2 acre yard is no problem.

Can the separate tine assemblies rotate freely on the shaft?

Can the separate tine assemblies rotate freely on the shaft or must they all rotate together in unison at the same speed? (To go around a tight corner smoothly, the inner tines should be able to rotate at a slower speed than the outer tines, which need to cover a greater distance.) Thanks for your help!
Posée par: DenScan
Thank you for contacting the Home Depot website. The 16-Gauge steel tines with three welded tine sections rotate independently, achieving maximum coverage.

Does the D125 have enough power to pull this thing when weighted?

Does the D125 have enough power to pull this thing when weighted?
Posée par: QQforD125
Yes, A John Deere D125 has ample power to pull this aerator. 100 to 200 lbs. of weight is sufficient to aerate a well hydrated lawn. Thank you for asking, -Travis
