Rated 2 de 5 de par 21 HP Intek Engine Failure I replaced my seven year old MTD with this tractor and was very pleased with its operation. The John Deere was simply better laid out and has better quality working components compared to the cheaper tractors. My issues arose after just three years of use. I perform oil changes every spring on all my small engines. This weekend after starting the tractor it stalled. I restarted it right away and then there was a huge bang and a cloud of smoke and I felt oil all over my right foot. I knew what had happened but was in denial that my 3 year old John Deere had just blown its engine with only 100 hours on it. After popping the hood I found chunks of engine block on the ground. I pulled the dipstick and it still showed about half its oil in the crankcase. There was a huge hole in the side of the block right beside the starter. After researching this I have found the 21HP Briggs and Stratton Intek engines have a flaw in the block right behind the starter and are prone to oil leaks and/or piston connecting rod breakage. This is exactly what has happened to my tractor. John Deere's engine warranty is two years. My engine blew at three years. Do yourself a favour and purchase a different JD model with a better engine. Now I am left selling a nearly new tractor as is for parts. I may buy another JD but it will NOT be a 21HP Intek.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Exceptional Value Replaced my 24 year old John Deere 160 which had the Kawasakie 12hp engine, with the 5 gear manual transmission for this new 2011 John Deere D120, which comes with a 21hp Briggs & Stratton engine and hydrostatic tranny. The D120 is cuts 4 inches wider (42") than my old Deere, but that's nothing to really brag about....however, the way this new D120 rides, is. Turning and steering is a charm and very tight. Motor is very powerful, and starts the moment the key is turned, in fact, it barely has time to turn over, and it's running smoothly. The strangest thing is, although it is almost twice the hp as my old 12 hp, it takes about a quarter of the gas....I mean, this 21 hp literally "sips" gas in comparison. It use to take one full tank to cut my property twice. Now, with "half" a tank, I can cut my property four times....yup "4" times on half the gas....go figure. At todays gas prices, that was a unexpected pleasant surprise. I did have to adjust the cutting deck, but in the manual it explains easily how to do that, which takes about 10 minutes to do. Just make sure the front of the deck is slightly lower than the rear. Make sure the 2 main spindles on the underside of the deck are always greased, using the provided zerks to do so. Zerks are also in front on each side to grease the steering mechanicism. The D120 even has cruise control, which isn't something I use because I only have a 1/2 acre of lawn, and I don't feel the need for such an option, but hey, it came with it. The lights in front are surprisingly strong and bright, which would allow me to even cut my grass at night if I wanted to, although I don't think my neighbors would appreciate that too much, still, it's nice to be able to have them for night driving or to be seen crossing a road etc. The D120 comes with a digital hour meter, so no more guess work on oil changes etc. The Briggs and Stratton engine has an oil filter, which surprisingly my old JD Kawasaki engine didn't. I realize that the D120 is not the higest end John Deere, and shouldn't really be compared to the higher ends like the X serie John Deeres, but still, for the average home owner who just bascially wants to cut a couple of acres of grass, and do some average chores around the house like pulling a trailer full of dirt etc, this guy does the trick easily, and with afforadability, without taking a second mortgage on the house. So far I am extremely pleased of the peformance and looks of the D120, and I expect to keep it for many years to come, which shouldn't be a problem, with the proper preventive maintenance that 'any' machine requires. I have read a few negative reviews on the D series, and realized that they were all from people who owned the much more expensive X and above series of JD lawn tractors, paying 5k or more. The only reason I believe they critisize the L and D series, is because they are trying to justify having paid thousands of dollars for their tractors to cut grass, realizing that the D120 would have done the same job, for a third of the price. Those that say the low end JD's don't have the longevity of the more expensive units, don't have a clue what they're talking about. If you maintain it, it will last a long long time. I highly recommend the D series John Deere. We're talking cutting grass here folks, not moving mountains and building freeways in the country. Sometimes, less is just.....more !

Rated 5 de 5 de par Great Tractor, Great Looking Lawn The john deere D 120 is a exellent lawn tractor. Works great, makes tight turns and is very manuverable. This tractor has lots of power on hills. The unit also has alot of power while bagging and towing a utility cart ( soil, plants, flowers etc). This tractor also cuts great as well. Leaves your lawn looking great after every pass. Overall this is a great machine.

Can I install a blower on a 120 series tractor

Which is the smallest rider that you can install a blower to help the side discharge work more efficient
Posée par: Anonyme
John Deere only offers the powerflow option for our 54" decks. While each cutting situation is unique, we recommend utilizing the 1/3 rule...setting the machine cut height so only 1/3 the length of the grass is cut at a time. This will result in better mulching and bagging performance.

Bad reviews

why are the john deere lawn tractors getting so many bad review lights falling out bad tires eg.
Posée par: Anonyme
The fact that there are so many John Deere lawn tractors sold, it only stands to reason that due the owne ratio, there would be more of them out there, therefore the perccntage rate of broken ones be higher. Taking that into consideration, there are probably less of these units that break down, compared to another brand that sells less units. For example, if Toyota cars is the biggest car retailer in North Ameica, wouldn't it seem normal to have more of them in the repair shop for whatever reason ? I have the John Deere D120, and couldn't be happier. Great little machine if you ask me.

What is the difference between the LA series of 2010 and the D series of 2011? Has John Deere significantly changed the designs?

Home Depot sold the LA series last year, and is now selling the D series. I'd like to know what changes John Deere has made to its lawn tractor product line.
Posée par: Anonyme
There are a number of differences between the LA and new D models. The hood has been redesigned along with the operators console and seating area (a bit more room between steering wheel and seat). The fuel tank has moved rearward and angled slightly to allow for easier fueling and less spilling and it features low-tone mufflers.
