Rated 5 de 5 de par Good compass for the money [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This isn't as robust as many compasses I have used, but almost as nice as any I have used. It is easy to set an exact radius with the thumb screw. This isn't the compass to have knocking around your tool box for scribing cuts on a board. It is much more useful as a marking compass for actually drawing circles and arcs. The storage case would hold up fine is a toolbox drawer, but would break quickly in the bottom of a large compartment with tools on it. See the pictures for maximum (just over 3") and minimum (just under 3/16") radius allowed.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Garbage--a waste of $9 I didn't expect much, but I did expect it to at least work. How do you screw up making something as simple as this? This is how: the channel that holds the point in place is too big and the point too polished to stay locked in even if you really bear down on the thumbscrew. It constantly slides back up into the leg when even the slightest pressure is put on it. Also, it wobbles in the slot, so even if it stayed put, it's useless for drawing unless you don't mind your arcs drifting and the perimeter points being off by as much as a sixteenth. I would have gotten more enjoyment and the same amount of use by lighting nine dollars on fire.

Rated 1 de 5 de par The Worst scriber. Do not buy this if you want a compass that will reliably hold the pencil/lead. Do not buy this if you want a compass that locks. Do not buy this if you want something to scribe with that won't scrape up your wall. The lead kept retreating into the head as I attempted to scribe no matter how tightly I turned the screw. The foot distance kept changing if I accidentally brushed the adjustment wheel. The metal screw head would have scraped my wall to heck if I'd kept it on. I took it off and put some tape on the side. A temporary Solution for what turned out to be the worlds worst scribing compass. I ended up using a piece of wood instead of this thing.

Empire a company that makes a lot a products in the USA but this item was made in China and you can see the lack of quality and precision. After 2 uses I felt it was not going to get better and went out and got a good compass that doesn't fall apart (made in Germany). Can't understand companies that mingle Chinese products into there product line and risk the lose of customers due to lack of quality and version.

This tool is a frustrating combination of good design and failure-prone follow through. The central set screw is easy to use and the compass holds its position quite well. The central handle is well positioned and it was easy to use the tool either as a measuring or a marking device. However, the small screws that hold the point and the pencil lead are finicky to adjust and very easily loosened and then lost. I have had three of these over the years, and none has gone more than 18 months without becoming useless because of the loss of one very small screw. The lack of durability means that I can't recommend this product at this price, even though when it works it is an easy 4-star tool.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Useless Product I bought an empire compass. Unlike the picture mine up is blue but it looks to be the same. This compass is virtually useless. Every time I touch the auger tip on to a surface the tip slips into the frame. Same for the pencil. I’ve tried everything including tightening the thumb screw with pliers and stuffing aluminum foil into the handle to prevent slipping. Nothing works. I suppose I’ll have to epoxy the auger tip into the handle. I would much rather be working on my project than writing this review but this terrible product is preventing me from doing that.

Rated 2 de 5 de par Barely good enough for kid's homework The good is that the micro adjustment to expand the compass works well and both the point and the lead are sharp - that's about it. The bad is that there is no macro adjustment for changing between large and small arcs to be drawn and have to scroll the thumbwheel. Also bad is that if you put enough pressure to darken the line the clamp that holds both the lead and point easily slip into the frame and have to be dug out and reset. For me the lack of macro adjustment and the continuous fidgeting with securing the lead and point makes this not a very good compass.

I do sheetmetal work. Can I get a second metal tip for scribing?

Posée par: Asa
it would be easier if you find a nail, screw, brad, used rivet stud to fit and use that as a scribe

That is just like mine. You might have to buy an elaborate one somewhere. It worked for me. Sorry.

How do I get more pencil lead? What size is it?

Mechanical pencil lead is too small and I'm not sure where to find the right size and I need this compass for work.
Posée par: Jenny
This compass uses 2mm lead available in book/office stores. Buy a leadholder that uses the same size lead and includes a "pointer" (sharpener) and extra leads. HB hardness is similar to a #2 pencil
