Rated 5 de 5 de par Like it! I have to disagree with the previous review. I just bought this the other day and its great. I'm hanging it so no squirrels can get to it. Its been up for a little over a day and I've seen a dozen birds or so go to the feeder and they don't seem to have any problem getting the bird seed at all. This morning there were three birds feeding at once. I think its great for the price. Probably I'd give it 4 1/2 stars just because there were others that I found to be more attractive, but those were more expensive.

Rated 2 de 5 de par Great idea BUT not quite right After examing all the feeders on the shelf I THOUGHT this was best to keep out the squirrels. It had a heavy guage metal grid around the feeder and on the top and bottom. It only lasted about 1 month before the little bugger's teeth chewed the seed hole at the bottom and the seed just poured out as quick as you put it in the top. It would work great if the metal was a little further away from the plastic feed holes. It can be hard to align in the holder in cold weather with gloves too, but is still workable. It's a good feeder otherwise, but don't expect it to keep out the "fuzzy tails".

Rated 5 de 5 de par sturdy, well-built, effective feeder for small birds We live in the northeast and have several bird feeders, including two of these. Pluses: - attracts small birds, like chickadees, nuthatches, titmice, juncos, finches. - sturdy, well-built, easy to load (from bottom) and easy to disassemble and clean. - design is simple and elegant, not a lot of moving parts to clean or manage - price-point is reasonable compared to similar feeders - Wire cage around hopper allows birds to land on feeder at various points - not just at single perches. Hopper is large enough to last several days - you don't have to refill as often as you do with small-hopper feeders that are narrower in diameter. - Nice (for us) red color. Metal parts are covered with plastic so they don't rust. Minuses: - Isn't squirrel proof (but no feeder is, IMHO). - can attract too many sparrows, who hang out on the wires and discourage other birds from landing. - Perches are too small for larger birds such as cardinals, grosbeaks, and jays. We suggest you fill with sunflower/black oil sunflower to attract the smaller seed-eating birds. And if you use sunflower, avoid hanging this right above a place where you're not trying to grow plants or lawn because the sunflower seeds/shells inhibit plant growth (google alleleopathy if you're curious about how this works). To discourage squirrels and enhance your bird-watching fun, consider hanging one of these from the eaves outside a second-story window, where you can view the birds up close and squirrels are unlikely to be able to get to it. Our cats love watching the birds out the window in the winter, and we don't have to worry about them actually hunting the birds. ;-)

Rated 4 de 5 de par Flawed, but I like it. This purchase replaces the same feeder I bought about 5 years ago. Agree with others that the plastic is not sturdy however, I've not found one with a similar design anywhere. I have it on a tree branch and the ability to remove the container from the bottom makes it possible to refill the feeder w/o a ladder. Also true that it can be difficult to line everything up just so to secure the feed container. All that said, the convenience and price point work for me.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Purchased At Least 6 of These Feeders I have lived in Texas, Michigan, Washington (state) and New York and I have purchased 1 or 2 of these feeders for each place. They aren't a 100% squirrel proof, but it does slow them down and if you hang them away from limbs and on a thin rope it makes it harder for the squirrels. I have Gold Finches, Purple Finches, House Finches, Sparrows, Downey Woodpeckers, Red Bellied Woodpeckers, Red Headed Woodpecher, Chickadees, Nuthatches, Tufted Titmice, House Wrens, Blue Jays and Starlings that come to these feeders. I layer different types of seeds so there is a little something for everyone. If you buy inexpensive seed you limit the variety of birds that will come to your feeder and you will have a lot of wasted seed left on the ground. It pays to purchase seed that is a higher quality. I like seed that has Sunflower Seed, Safflower and Whole or Cracked Corn and even Shelled Peanuts. I had a Mockingbird that came to this feeder, so I put Raisins, Dry Cranberries and Blueberries out for her. If you hang a Suet Feeder next to your seed feeder it will help bring a greater number of birds. Especially when it is cold. I love these feeders because they load from the bottom, so if you hang them in a tree you can reach up and turn the bottom to easily refill them. When I lived in Washington I had three Raccoons that raided my feeders every night. They were so smart they would pull the rope and bring the feeders to them and chew the rope. They couldn't get them open so they would drop them to the ground and roll them to get the seed out. I finally attached a couple of hooks to the eaves of the cabin which were about 15 feet above the ground and tied a thin rope to the feeder so that I could raise and lower the feeder to fill it. I finally out smarted the Raccoons and also the Squirrels. I have to refill my feeders every couple of days. This is a great feeder and is extremely durable and worth every penny. The reason I purchase new ones every time I move, is not because the feeders wear out, but because people can't believe how many different types of birds are at the feeders. It's like leaving a house warming gift for the next owner.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Lots of Birds We tried a few feeders and the squirls got them, so I bought this one.... and now we enjoy watching all the different birds feed. We have had a good time watching the squirls try to get at the seed, but they cant. Very happy with this feeder. We use Wangner seed, one $10 bag of seed fills it up almost twice, and we have about 8 different bird types including, sparrows, purple and golden finches, chickadees doves and Jays.

Rated 3 de 5 de par Good but not great! I like this feeder because it holds alot of seed and does not require filling so often but the wire holders that you use to hang it are not installed very well and readily come out. I am going to have to work on them somewhat to get them to a reliable point.....other than that, I like it.

Is it chipmunk proof?

I purchased another squirrel-be-gone feeder (one that's weighted to not allow squirrels access to the seed), however, a chipmunk was able to get thru the metal squares and totally destroyed the feeder. I'm looking for something that won't allow the chipmunk to carry away all the seed.

I really doubt it as those little buggers can get into anything. It has a red wire cover and the openings are about 1 inch. I would guess it depends on where you hang it. I'm hanging mine from my shepherd's crook (plant hook) and hope they aren't such great jumpers. :)
