Rated 5 de 5 de par Well Built Water Heater I chose this model because it was Energy Star rated. I've not noticed a difference in my gas bill but it's be running alongside two furnaces, so I probably won't notice it until next summer. I like the pilotless ignition and the extra insulation. The package mentioned a wifi setup and wasn't very clear that this was an option, but, from what I saw, it's an option that I'm just as happy not to have. Installation was straightforward, but keep in mind that this water heater needs 110 V power to operate, unlike the old style with pilot light. I had to scramble a bit to free up a plug. The heater has been running so far for about three months. All good so far.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Rheem Water Heater and horrible Customer Service. I own a Heating and Air Conditioning Business and I purchased this for a Customers house. After the installation and tank full of water it would not ignite. The Vapour Sensor was faulty right from the get go. No big deal just run to Home Depot where I bout it and get a new sensor right??? WRONG! Home Depot does not even carry parts for it and were completely useless in helping me. They literally have zero clue about the products they sell. I had to travel an hour outta town to a Distributer that had them in stock and paid $75 out of my pocket to get a new one for the customer cause unlike Home Depot I won't leave my Customers hanging without hot water when they buy a BRAND NEW unit from me. Get you act together HD not impressed.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Terrible job of the install. Used Home Depot’s installers. They refused to adjust the gas line to fit the new tank, instead bent it over to fit the new connection location, stressing the gas line at its threaded joint above in a way that looks like may eventually split! they refuse to correct it and refuse to have a different installer come to inspect it. Do not use their installers! In response to my concerns and request for it’s correction, they simply say they stand by their installers. This was after paying approximate $700 just for the install portion of the purchase.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Steer clear of this water heater Bought this water heater yesterday and it doesn't work. Called the 800 # and it was diagnosed as having a bad transformer. Unfortunately,Rheem doesn't have a new transformer in stock to send us, but may have some in stock in about 2 weeks. Our options are to find and buy a new transformer or to uninstall and return the unit. Rheem will reimburse us for FMV of the transformer, excluding shipping and handling. I've seen the parts online for between $25 and $85. Rheem sells the part (when it's available) for $28, so most likely, they won't reimburse any more than that. Seems ridiculous since we'd be happy to have them ship us the part, but they don't have it. So very disappointed. We don't recommend this product or Rheem.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Terrible product!! We purchased this with same day pick up only to have it fully installed and find out hours later that it would not turn on, like many other reviewers said. We called Rheem and told them about the faulty part. We also mentioned that we have an infant son and it's still winter in New England so there is a sense of urgency- THEY DID NOT CARE. We were going to have to wait four days. We then called Home Depot and like usual, their customer service was amazing and they let us return the product for a full refund. Rheem should take a lesson. Thank you Home Depot for being reasonable and to all those looking to buy this product... take a serious look at other brands and spare yourself the hassle.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Warranty parts not covered in Canada ... Installed this tank 3 years ago ... tank shuts down a couple of weeks ago ... with help of YouTube I diagnosed as a faulty "flammable vapor sensor", part number SP20172 ... I call Rheem tech services since the tank has a 12 year warranty ... only to be told that this part is not warrantied in Canada ... I asked if it was in the US and apparently yes it is ... but because the tank was sold and resides in Canada it is not a covered part. How can that be ... really? I asked to speak with the supervisor who confirmed ... not covered in Canada ... so what good is the 12 year warranty? So beware, they do not stand behind their product, I will never buy Rheem again My resolution ... I was able to by one off Amazon for <$50 ... and the gas valve reset procedure is on YouTube.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Warranty- but wait 3 weeks My tank that I paid $970.00 for 15 months ago, failed- called for warranty(note labor is only included for 12 months. Was told be Rheem 3 weeks for the part, called around the city-only one company stocks parts-Emco - no stock at least 3 weeks called home depot asked if I could take a part off a tank that they had in stock-No End result went and purchased a John wood tank and was up and running the same day So what good it the warranty if you have to wait 3 weeks

Rated 1 de 5 de par Bad product and absolutely terrible customer suppo Bought this unit in February 2021 and Home Depot contractors installed it. Started having issues in Oct 2021. Rheem warranty requires the customer (not the contractor) to contact their support. Regardless, I have now switched out the pilot assembly and gas valve (2X TIMES in a MONTH!!). Issue is still there. Rheem wants to continue to send another gas valve to replace the existing gas valve that they had sent in less than 1.5 weeks! It is interesting that I had a GE hot water tank for 11 years and never had a single problem.

My new Rheem Performance Platnium 40 gal gas water heater make very loud rumbling noise each time it starts to fire up the gas to heat the water. Is this normal? It has done this since day one. Is something wrong with the burner?

Posée par: Felix
Hi Felix. Thanks for reaching out. Sorry for the long winded answer below. Here are some possible reasons/solutions. A service provider can also help in trouble shooting the problem. Rumbling, pounding and other noises when the heater is in operation are usually caused by formation of scale and sediment. Minerals will form a scale on the bottom of the inner tank that traps minute amounts of moisture. Heat from the gas burner changes these tiny trapped amounts of moisture to steam and the pressures developed cause the rumbling and pounding noises. In addition to being very annoying to the homeowner, accumulation of sediment and mineral deposits in the bottom of the tank can appreciably shorten the tank life.Diagnosed early, these sediments may be flushed out simply by periodically draining the tank. Banging Baffles. The baffle is an engineer designed component of the heater and is essential to the heater’s efficiency rating. On occasion, the baffle will make a noise like banging metal to metal. This is exactly what is happening. The baffle is ‘wiggling’ around in the hanger bracket and making noise by banging against the side of the flue tube. This is a normal noise and can be removed by bending the metal tabs on the hanger bracket to tighten the baffle. Another method is to remove the baffle and bend it slightly; then reinstall the baffle. The idea is to make a snug fit back into the flue tube.

Does this model XG40S12DM40U0 use the electronic ignition or does it have a standing pilot light? I seeing conflicting info. The User Manual uses the word 'pilot' somewhat ambiguously but the Home Depot description indicates electronic ignition. Which is it?
Posée par: Tim
Rheem's answer doesn't seem to make sense. I thought the whole point of electronic ignition was to *eliminate* the standing, ever-present pilot light. So, which is it?

can I hard wire this?

can I hard wire this?
Posée par: oli
Not sure what you want to hardware as this is a gas appliance. However the flu damper and electronic ignition does have a plug in transformer requiring a 120v outlet. Would not recommend trying to hardwire it.

I have two questions. The first is fairly simple, I am presuming that this unit can simply replace an atmospheric unit so long as there is a 120v outlet available for the damper/ignition?

Posée par: Paul
Yes it requires a 120 volt outlet to plug in the plug in transformer. which powers the damper and ignition. I've used the unit now for more than a Year, and it has performed without any problems. the only con is; as the gas turns on it makes a bit of a rumble, which does not bother me, as it indicates that the unit is operating properly.

With regards to the water fittings, will the female threaded end of a Sharkbite SS3088FLEX18LF Corrugated Stainless Steel Water Heater Connector, 3/4- Inch SB x 3/4-Inch FIP attach to the threaded male water intake and outlet?

I don't see why the (Sharkbite SS3088FLEX18LF ) shouldn't work.

We are looking to purchase this model but would like know if there have been any problems we should be aware or thoughts on this water heater because it's for an older family member.
Posée par: MW
This heater has been PROBLEM FREE for some time now, after the rebate from the gas company it made the price close to the cheaper models. be smart and factor that into your decision to purchase it. My older unit had a blanket on it to reduce heat loss this model it is not needed. I cant feel any heat loss by touching the sides of it when in use. I also recommend the use of a water recirculation kit because it reduces wasting water at the shower waiting for the hot water to start. It also warms the floor were the pipes run. depends where your pipes are roughed. The recirculation can be turned off in the summer and is controlled by a timer to match your hot water needs. This heater is electronically monitored and controlled flashing led indicates its status, the burners are a lot louder than older model but it heats faster and has lowered my gas bill.

WHAT HAPPEN IF THE POWER GOES OFF, DOES THE HOT WATER HEATER STILL WORK?

Posée par: MILO
You will be able to draw the water already heated from the tank, but without power to open the air flue or ignite the gas it will not heat any additional water. The system works off of 24v so you may be able to make a backup system with 2x 12v batterys but that is alot of effort.
