Rated 1 de 5 de par Removed layer of paint I used this and the aged grey chalk paint to re paint a dresser, this dresser was particularly tricky to paint because it was previously a stained red wooden dresser and the red stain was leaking through the paint despite being chalk paint. The paint still worked wonders as it only took 3 coats to cover the stain. Although when I put the 'protective' top coat ontop of the aged grey chalk paint suddenly all the red stain spots were showing through and another coat of aged grey had to be put ontop to repair recover the stains. Not worth the money at all.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Waste of money I purchased this to protect my projects from stains. It does NOTHING except remove the matte finish from the pieces. It adds a gloss which defeats the purpose of chalk paint. My dressing table still shows each drop of liquid that falls on it so there is no protection. This is even after THREE coats, which caused ugly brush strokes. This is a terrible product. Stick to polycrylic satin finish. Easy, cheaper, and smooth finish. You learn as you grow.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Excellent Results! I used this product to protect the chalk paint faux finish I had created on my accent wall. Worked beautifully! Enhanced the colours while still having a matte finish. Smooth wipeable finish. Some tips for use: DO NOT SHAKE. Gently stir the product throughly. I used a foam roller to apply the product, then brushed it to smooth it out. Do Not over work it while applying it. It will bubble and get rough streaks if you roll ir brush to much. I practiced on a practice board first to get familiar with handling the product before applying to my project.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Terrible over light colours Came out nice over charcoal chalk paint, though it did slightly remove the paint in a few places. Over the linen white it was awful. Turned the paint an orangey yellow despite being very careful and putting on a thin coat. It is only good over dark colours. Considering it is the same brand and recommended to use along with these paints, this is unacceptable. Do NOT buy.

Rated 2 de 5 de par Top Coat creates more work! I have used other top coats and this is by far the worst. If you leave any white marks especially in crevices and corners) it doesnt dry clear. Also, it never drys evenly. I had to sand it off and repaint and use a different topcoat. Waste of time and money. IMO.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Excellent, If Used Properly! I see some people have experienced yellowing of their project, but this is not the product at fault. The problem stems from "not needing to prime" before using chalk paint. Yes, you can apply chalk paint without primer, but in some cases primer must be used first. Some woods, if old or worn - or high tannin woods must be primed with a stain-blocking primer prior to painting. High tannin woods most susceptible to pulling up yellowing are: Cedar, Pine, Oak, Mahogany, and Redwood. In order to seal certain woods and prevent the tannins from rising to the top/and colors from bleeding, when topcoats are applied, you can first seal the project with something like Zinsser Bulls Eye Primer or Rustoleum Zinsser, or any proper stain-blocking primer. You don't need primer to apply chalk paint, but you DO need it if you are painting a wood where colors might bleed or a high tannin wood. ALL BRANDS of top coats, whether they be Rustoleum, Annie's, or whatever, are strong penetrating lacquers that will pull up underlying tannins and cause a yellowing effect over light colors if they are not properly sealed first. As well, thin coats must be applied. Apply a very thin coat first, then wait for it to dry thoroughly before a second thin coat. Thick coats will cause clouding. When applied properly with the correct brush ( high quality synthetic brush), not a roller, this topcoat prevents future yellowing and scuffs, etc. I also see some people complaining about a glossy sheen afterwards. Again, this is due to inexperience. Be patient when mixing! Turn your container upside down and let it sit for a couple hours, if possible. Carefully turn over (don't shake it) and use a paint stick to scrape all the way to the bottom to mix in the agents. Stir before and during use. If topcoat is not thoroughly stirred, the finish will be shinier because the agents weren’t mixed in well enough. If the topcoat is shaken up, bubbles will form in the finished project - which you sure don't want to have. ALL brands of topcoat for chalk paint work the same, so follow these instructions for every brand. Just my 2 cents.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Waste of money (and time, and base chalk paint) Painted a bedroom set with chalk paint, looked great, bought the clear coat to protect it. Thankfully I tested on one small nightstand instead of clear coating all at once, because now I’ll need to sand and repaint what the clear coat ruined. I waited a full 24 hours for final coat of paint to dry, the surface was clean, I did not shake the can, I used the synthetic brush as specified on the can, and avoided applying too much product. And still the nightstand is streaky, the clear coat brush came away with my base color in it, and the spots where it dripped slightly did not dry clear, but rather are a white glue-y looking disaster. Thankfully I only bought the small 236ml jar because I’ll never use this junk again.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Poor product I echo the other reviews of this product. Rustoleum recommends that this product be applied over their chalk paint. Don't do it. Don't even start with the chalk paint. Leaves brush strokes. Does not level. Removes the paint it's supposed to protect.

I painted a stool with rustoleum chalk paint. I let it dry thoroughly for two days. When I started to apply the rustoleum chalked matte clear protective topcoat, the chalk paint started to come off. Why would this happen? The stool was thoroughly cleaned

Posée par: Diane
That is odd to hear, Diane! If the Rust-Oleum Chalked Paint had not dried properly, the water in the clear topcoat could potentially cause it to lose adhesion from the surface. This could be caused by poor drying conditions if the temperatures are too low, or if the Chalked paint was applied especially heavy. There is also a possibility that the stool had a waxed finish on it, which would prevent the Chalked Paint from adhering properly. We need to know a bit more about the application to get to the bottom of this. Please give us a call at 800-901-0411 and we will be happy to help. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

Hi I have painted a table with Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Multi-Purpose Paint in Flat Black and was wondering if I using the Chalked Protective Topcoat is a good option to protect my furniture. If not, what would you suggest me as a solution?

Posée par: Rob Amado
Hi Rob, We recommend either the Chalked Protective Top Coat or our Varathane Diamond Wood Finish Interior Soft Touch Matte Finish. Allow our Rustoleum Painter's Touch Multi-Purpose Paint in Flat Black to dry for at least a week or more to guarantee it has dried thoroughly. Test the finish on a small area first to check for any adhesion issues.

I purchased this paint and upon opening, it is very chunky-looking. They did not mix it at the store for me. Should I have it mixed or is that normal? Again, it is already opened.

Can I add this on an existing wall with glossy paint to degloss it?

Posée par: Paint
Interesting question! Rust-Oleum Chalked Clear Ultra Matte Paint is designed for application to enhance our Chalked Ultra Matte Paint finish and it adds protection to the surface. We would not recommend this be applied over glossy wall paint. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

While painting with the matte clear top coat over the charcoal chalked paint, some of the charcoal paint came off, exposing the wood underneath. Is it ok to re-paint these exposed areas with the chalk paint after the matte clear topcoat has been applied? Or, what would be a better way to deal with this problem? The charcoal chalk paint was allowed to dry for several days before the top coat was applied.
Posée par: Carlene
Thanks for reaching out Bella! Applying Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte Clear over Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte Charcoal should not cause the Charcoal to lift from the surface, this is an indication of an adhesion problem with the surface. Please give us a call at 800-481-4785 so we can hear more about your application, we can then provide a resolution. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

So I painted my chairs the linen white and aged grey. After applying the top coat to the aged grey, the painted started to bubble. I followed all instructions. What can be done to fix this? Can I get a refund of all my money spent on this paint?

can I apply a dark wax after applying the Clear Ultra Matte Interior Chalked Paint? If so, do I apply right away or after it has had time to dry. I want to apply dark wax and immediately wipe it off only leaving a tad behind.

Posée par: Paula
Hi Paula, you can apply a wax as soon as our Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte Paint has dried for a minimum of 2 hours. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2
