Cordless String Trimmers are kinda' new, and they all seem to be pretty similar (the same can be said for probably all of the 'big' voltage cordless tools). The deciding factor for a lot of people looking to buy them, usually boils down to which System they've already bought into, or which System they 'want' to buy into (it's the research for getting started that's the hard part). I initially went with Ryobi because they have a wide variety of tools; that all seem to perform well, or at least good enough; and the price is usually in line with my wallet (easy availability doesn't hurt either). So anyway, here's the sitch from my point of view. First the Good, 01); Ryobi isn't the only company making String Trimmers with interchangeable Attachment-Heads, but since I was already into their stuff, I was happy to see that I could slowly expand my cordless tool collection, while saving space and using my current Batteries and Chargers. 02); I haven't used this particular Trimmer a ton, but so far it looks like it's rugged enough to hold up (time will tell). 03); I like the fact that it has a little Belt-Clip (like the professionals use), so I can transfer some of the weight from my arms and shoulders. By the way, a lot of companies sell Shoulder-Straps and/or Harnesses -- don't go that route: sure, they're better than nothing, but nowhere near as good as a Belt (transfer that weight directly onto the hips, where it belongs). And 04); The price is reasonable. Now the Bad, so far, there's only 01); The 'Reel-Easy' Trimmer Head was a good idea, just poorly executed (and it only held 10-feet of String). So I bought a professional Speed-Feed Head (Echo 400), and some bigger, badder professional String (Gatorline Magnum .105"), and swapped them out. Now it holds twice the string, and works like it should -- although winding fresh line is still kind of a pain -- and it still takes a few seconds for the motor to get up to speed, but I think that's due to the low-torque motors used in all of Ryobi's 40-Volt tools (that I've tried) -- I'm guessing it's the same with all 'big' voltage cordless tools. And finally my Suggestions, 01); First and formost, fix that 'Reel-Easy' Trimmer Head. For starters make it bigger (increase the string capacity) -- but more importantly, make that Crank-Handle a 'built-in' feature. Design it to swing out for winding, like on a Fishing Reel (instead of the current wobbly, sloppy flailing around and falling off -- my God, it's like trying to brush your teeth left-handed), then have it fold back down into the Trimmer Head Housing for trimming, completely out of the way (like you see on certain Casement Window Crank-Handles). 02); Give the Power Unit the ability to hold 'two' Batteries (connected in Parallel), for extended run-time -- in fact, forget that and provide a 'Belt' with each unit (that the Trimmer clips onto), and have the Batteries plug into the Belt, making the Trimmer itself smaller, lighter, and simpler, and transfering most of the weight directly to the hips, where it belongs. And 03); Give it (and all of your 40-Volt tools) higher torque Motors. Even if that lowers the top-speed -- as long as they have enough RPM to do the job, a stronger (quicker) bottom-end would be better all around. If some tools don't have enough RPM, then gear-up their Final Drive, the extra torque should let it to push that taller gear (don't take my word for it, talk to your Engineers). Do these things and you'll have the biggest, baddest, bestest String Trimmer, Edger, Brush Hog, Hedge Trimmer, Pole Saw, Leaf Blower, etc -- ever made (at least for Cordless, and at least for the money). As it is, it certainly feels better than average (again, time will tell), and it fits into my chosen System (Ryobi). I give it 4 stars.

We have had this for one Minnesota season and it has performed flawlessly on my acre yard in town. It has gas like power and most of all doesnt need gas or require ear plugs. I especially love the bump head design for feeding more line. I definitly push the battery to the end, but it always just makes it. This summer we also had a slope we were going to lay some sod, but we were fighting to get the ground prepped, so I went and bought the tiller attachment and it worked great on very hard ground. I'm sure this would be the biggest amp load on this tool and we had no issues. The tiller will get used again for the same tasks next year, hoping for many years of use to come.

Works only well enough but eats battery FAST because you have to redo areas due to it being underpowered. Convenient that you don't have to mess with gas or exhaust and it isn't spinning if you aren't on the trigger. Would be better with a shoulder strap too. The adjustable grab handle is nice.

How long does the battery last ?

Posée par: Janette
Hi Janette, Our 40V batteries have different amp hour ratings which affect the run time. if you have a larger yard that requires more trimming we recommend a higher amp hour battery. Our 40V batteries are available in 2.6, 4 and 5 amp hour ratings on homedepot.ca. Thank you, Ryobi Canada Team
