We accidentally punctured a water line in the wall while installing a cabinet, and of course it was late on a Saturday night, so calling a plumber would have cost a fortune. We looked online for the best DIY fixes and up came the Sharkbite coupling. Thankfully HD had it in stock and though the employee was clueless about the product, we bought it, watch the SharkBite how to video and installed it, fixing our leak and saving the day!…as well as lots of $$. The only reason it’s getting a 4 star is the difficulty of getting it on the pipe was pretty rough and if I wasn’t persistent and strong enough, we’d have spent the rest of the weekend with the water off! But, I would recommend it highly for those crazy emergency moments!

Yes it can, and it can be used to splice a pipe you had to cut to remove a leaky section

My copper pipe has a 1" outer diameter; is this the right size and product to repair 1 1/2 inch tear? If so, would I also need to purchase a deburring tool and that little orange collar-thing? I assume it's OK to cut pipe with a hacksaw, no?
Posée par: Nate
Copper pipe generally has an outside diameter 1/8 inch bigger than its nominal size. That is, a 3/4 inch pipe has a 7/8 inch outside diameter, and a 1 inch pipe has a 1 1/8 inch outside diameter. You should buy the shark bite fitting according to the nominal size. You don’t necessarily need the deburring tool, but that would make it easier. You can also deburr it using a file or sandpaper, probably about 120 grit. You will definitely need the little orange release tool to slide the fitting back over the cut out section - It usuall comes in the package with this particular fitting. A hacksaw will work fine if you can cut it nice and square. The most important thing is to make sure the end of the pipe is smooth on the inside and outside edges so it doesn’t cut or tear the rubber O-ring inside the fitting. A little water on the pipe acts as a good lubricant for sliding it on. And, yes, it should be able to span a 1 1/2” gap.

How do you take off the fittings if put on wrong

Posée par: Ezee
There is a beige colored plastic ring extending about 1/8" beyond the metal fitting. This needs to be pushed in towards the fitting to release the pipe. There is an orange plastic tool in the shape of the letter 'C' included. Snap it around the pipe then use it to push the ring in to release the pipe.

Posée par: mtf
Yes, you need to purchase PEX tubing to replace the damaged part of the plumbing line but it’s a true do it yourself solution.
