Rated 5 de 5 de par GREAT KIT [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a great kit if you would like to build shelves, workbench or other things. Even know I have not decided what I'm going to build these will make putting it together a lot easier. The kit does provide all the hardware you will need including the screws to fasten it together. The kit also includes a set of plans for building shelves or a workbench. If you're going to make a large set of shelve or a large workbench you will probably need to purchase another kit.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Everything You Need This is a great kit. We recently moved here from another state and I wanted a workbench for the garage. After looking at several prefab units, I came across this kit and after downloading and looking over the assembly instructions from the Home Depot website (PDF file), I ordered it. All of the hardware is included in the box and the instructions include measurements for the lumber. I had the 2x4s cut to size and found the exact size plywood and pegboard pre-cut. I took the kit and the lumber home and got to work. I completed the project a few minutes at a time over two or three days, but could probably have finished it in a couple of hours or so if I'd done it all at once. About the only thing that could be improved is a listing of which screws are to be used for each section, but it wasn't hard to figure out, based on the number of screws received. I think it turned out great. I mounted a power strip to the side, added a vice and stuck an old reading lamp on the top. It's more solid than any prefab I could have bought and it meets all my needs.

As a homeowner and non-construction person, I liked the idea of a kit so that I would have everything I needed to build my shelves. I have built shelves with kits from other companies and they are not nearly as sturdy as these shelves. Basically, the unit took me two days to build. One day to cut all the boards and another day to assemble the shelf. I wish the instructions were a little more detailed, but the videos they have on the website were a big help.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Easy to build, strong and stable I needed a workbench for the garage so I picked up this kit. It came with easy to follow directions that you can follow or you can do as I did and build your workbench in custom dimensions. Everything went together easily and in no time I had a custom workbench. I will be buying more for sure!

All you need to do is cut your lumber to the proper lengths and assemble it using the brackets and screws provided in the kit. It makes a very sturdy and attractive bench.

After reviewing a few YouTube videos and taking a few notes I built my first workbench. It was so awesome and the parts went together smoothly. Here is the base of the worktable before the top and shelf went on it.

You could build a bench or shelving unit without it, but this makes things so much easier. The screws go in easily. You have options on the length of the bench or shelves, but the instructions provide a basic outline. Built the bench in an hour maybe. Cake walk. Now it's covered in "stuff" as I reorganize my garage. The picture at least displays it's durability.

screws

what kind of screws would you use my sides are a 2x4 and legs are 4x4 while using the kit
Posée par: jaabwash
The screws are included. Not sure what you're asking regarding 4x4 legs but they would have to be freestanding inside the corners of the brackets. It's plenty sturdy with the 2x4

Will this work with 2x3 as well?

Posée par: PATRICK
Yes, the brackets are now shorter than previous versions of this kit. This is both good and bad. When I used the old bracket to build shelving, I used 2x3s for my horizontal supports which had more than enough strength and saved me an inch vertical space per shelf. This required a lot of notching the shelf deck because the old brackets were taller than 2.5”. These new brackets do not rise above a 2x3 so no notching required. However, when assembling a workbench with 2x4s where I want a solid structure, the new brackets come up short. The horiz piece that butts up to the long side of the vertical 2x4 only has 2 screws in it vs 4 with the older bracket. This caused noticeable wiggling/racking in that direction. I ended up drilling extra holes in the brackets to get an extra 2 screws on the horiz piece and it seems to have tightened up the structure. I like these new brackets but they should have kept the old ones, too, for when you need heavy duty 2x4 structure.

Where is the "deal"?

This is not a deal at all, unless you consider the overpriced screws a big advantage, then you save maybe $5. What you lose is the flexibility to design what you really want. I don't get it. Is this supposed to actually be $25?
Posée par: gjp
You can buy all these parts separately. If you dont like what the kit makes, dont buy it. It works well for what it claims.

What is new and improved in this version versus the previous?

I have three work benches and four shelf unit made with the older version. I am looking to buy more. What is different about these? It looks like they use a lot less screws? :(
Posée par: Jockey
As the Simpson rep says, this uses a new version of the corner bracket. This is both good and bad. It is roughly 2/3 the size of the previous bracket with fewer screw holes. This allows it to be easily used with 2x3 lumber on the horizontal structure which was not the case with the old bracket. I would always use 2x4 on the verticals. The bad news is fewer screw holes gives a somewhat less solid structure. The horizontal piece that butts up against the short end of the 2x4 now only has 2 screws in it vs the 4 previously. This resulted in some wiggling/racking in that direction while the perpendicular direction has 4 screws and feels very solid. I ended up drilling 2 extra holes on the side with the wiggle and installed extra screws which have tightened up the structure. Bottom line, this is a great system which I have used to build 2 workbenches, lots of shelving and a TV stand. You have almost unlimited creativity in using it and the brackets remove most of the problem of racking (see above). The new brackets in this kit would be great for light duty shelving but not as much for heavy duty applications where you really want a solid structure. Simpson should have kept the old brackets and these new brackets would be a welcome compliment to them.

Can I add casters to the kit?

I'm replacing a smaller workbench that came in with casters and I wonder if I can attach casters to this kit.

Yes, you should be able to add casters to the 2x4 legs.

size limitations

Can I use this kit to build a 4x8 workbench?
Posée par: Newfields2000
I don't have the directions any longer but I am sure it specifies that you can make it 4, 6, or 8 feet long. I made mine 8 feet long and used a sheet of 4 by 8 plywood cut (at store) to two 2 by 8 pieces. I recommend using either 1/2 or 3/4 inch plywood to make the 8 foot span sturdy. It will handle any type of work or any weight I put on it.

Made mine 5 feet wide with 5' x 3' pegboard back. Put a shelf on the top rail with an LED light strip below it. Added a power strip on back corner post. Great looking bench and functional.
