[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is an easy to use, premixed water based stain that ages wood quickly and without nasty fumes. I tested this on pine, basswood, balsa and bamboo, the most common woods I use. It works well on all of them but really makes pine look aged and weathered. I plan on using this to age model kits and dioramas and being water based I can apply it inside the house and not gas everyone out with dangerous fumes. A quart covers over 250 sq ft. Application is easy, just brush on and let it dry for 30 minutes to an hour. You do not need to wipe the excess off. If you want a light coat of weathering you can wipe some of it off of course. If you want to protect the wood you can cover this with a lacquer based clear. They do not recommend a poly clear coat directly over the stain. It works well, it doesn't stink up the house and a quart will last me years. I recommend it.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was looking for an aged wood effect on a project that I was doing. I used rough sanded pine for this. I was well pleased with the effect that it produced. I also tried it out on some fine sanded pine. But the rough sanded seemed to work better as it really gave it that aged look that I was after. Just for kicks and giggles, I tried it on other species of wood. I was surprised at the mixed effects that it produced. Some I liked. Some I did not. So I suggest that you test it out before you start a large project. All in all I really liked this product, and recommend it

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I'm always looking for new effects for wood finishing, so I thought I'd give the Aged Wood Accelerator a try. The application is simple enough - brush on, wait an hour for the most part. The question is, what's it do? Well, I tried test patches on scraps of white pine, swamp ash and red oak. On the very porous white pine, the effect was pretty much like a weak stain coat - to me it said "brown" instead of "aged." I had higher hopes for the swamp ash, but in truth it was a pretty boring piece of swamp ash. It came out OK. Where it really excelled though, was the red oak - the grain really "popped" and I could really envision it as aged. Probably will take some experimenting to get a great effect (e.g., randomly wiping parts after application).

Work fast because it will leave spots if you don't apply it evenly. You can fix any issues pretty easily if that happens (trust me :-)) If you are looking for a rustic look (mimicking reclaimed wood) this may not work like you thought. I thought this would be a good alternative to make my own reclaimed wood look. I followed the instructions but the results were not what I expected. That being said I am very satisfied with the way it turned out. The table top was new red oak. I would definitely try out the product on a scrap piece of wood, sanded or distressed or whatever you intend to do to see how it will work. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Nice water based stain but I fail to see how it looks like aged wood when done. The container is plastic with a lid that snaps closed easily and completely - no hammer needed. The product results in a transparent brown finish which looks to me like a transparent brown stain. I fail to see that the result looks "aged". The product is more striking on a wood with a lot of grain. I would definitely use this as a medium brown stain stain but not as an aging product. I love the convenience of soap and water cleanup.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Aged Wood Accelerator made by Varathane products is an quick way to get that rustic look on any raw wood piece. The can has a plastic top for easy opening and sealing. It is water based and can be applied with a brush, then wiped off or simply use a cloth. The rustic brown color dries in a couple of hours but looks best after 24 hours. Protection can be applied using a varathane lacquer spray.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Completely wrong color I was very excited to try this out. Prepped the board before hand with the necessary sanding steps, wiped it clean. I put pre stain conditioner waited and brushed some of this stuff I knew instantly it wasn’t work. I figured I’m already in deep might as well continue. Waited two hrs to put a second heavy coat. 8hrs later I got a light purple-ish color which my wood filler didn’t seem to pick up the color so that stands out even more because of the lack of color it absorbs. Not happy very disappointed with this purchase. My expectations where to high.

Can I use Danish Oil over this?

Can I use Danish Oil over this?
Posée par: EH
You can but you might want to wait a few days for it to dry completely. Depending on the wood, you might want to light sand the wood for better penetration.

I can’t speak for poplar, but I used it on pine and was not at all impressed. To me, it was a waste of money

Happy to help! We recommend first sealing Rust-Oleum Varathane Aged Wood Accelerator with the recommended lacquer spray to prevent it from further reacting on the surface or with the other topcoat. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Can Varathane White wash Stain be applied over the Aged Wood Accelerator? If so, would lacquer still be needed or can I use water based polyurethane??
Posée par: Dana
Happy to try to help, Dana! As you likely are aware, wood can only absorb so much product before you run into difficultly with the drying on the surface. If you apply both the Varathane Aged Accelerator and the Varathane White Wash, you will probably have some issues with the absorption of the products into the wood, which would mean it could remain tacky. We would suggest sticking to one only for best results! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

Can epoxy be applied over this? If so, what is the dry time for the accelerator?

Posée par: Stephanie
Thank you for reaching out, Stephanie! Our Varathane Aged Wood Accelerator dries in 2 hours, and we recommend applying our Watco Clear Lacquer Spray to seal the surface before applying any other type of clear coating, such as a polyurethane or epoxy. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Watco-11-25-oz-Clear-Satin-Lacquer-Wood-Finish-Spray-6-Pack-63281/204787358 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2
