It actually made soft, spongy wood quite solid. I was skeptical, because the instructions said to remove all the "decayed and soft wood." And if you do that, what's the point? If the wood were not "decayed and soft," I wouldn't need a wood hardener. Still, I thought it was worth a try, since the alternative would have involved replacing a section of flooring. I removed the parts that were rotten to the point of really disintegrating and hoped that somehow it would work on the remaining semi-rotten wood. It did. The wood soaked it up and, after it dried, I applied a second coat and it got even harder. Then I filled a few large gaps in the wood with Bondo for Wood and, at least so far, it seems to be a very solid surface. If your area is hidden, or if you're willing to paint afterwards, this might work.

I purchased this product to treat a spalted maple hollow form bowl that I turned on a lathe. Spalted wood has very interesting color and pattern but since spalting is the beginning of rot, it is much softer than wood not spalted. This product allowed me to sand and finish to a nice shine. It definitely met my expectations.

I followed the instructions and used it on some wooden window sills and surrounding areas which were having some problems with rot. I applied the hardener and was surprised how thin the liquid was. I let it set and then did it several more times, but it barely hardened the wood. I will now need to find a more substantial product and will likely return what is left. Maybe it would work better in other applications, but it didn't do the trick for what I was trying to do.

Excellent sets up quickly, but you must were gloves and don't let it spill on you, it's very fast drying and very hard to remove. But it does the job well.Don't pour into a plastic cup, it ate right through in two minutes. I couldn't get it off my shoes.

I transfer this to a small squeeze bottle with a long snout, and I can squirt this stuff into compromised wood very easily. It hardens the wood in an hour or so then I paint right over it. I use it mostly on old sheds where strong wood is more necessary than looks, so I never follow up with the wood filler putty. Its expensive, though. I wish I could by it in a gallon, or larger size.

I used this product to harden some dry rot in the bottoms and ends of my 12 foot long clear cedar decking, which has been in place for 26 years. Rather than replace the deck boards for a small amount of dry rot at the ends and bottoms. Note that you should not use this product to try to reinforce any structural/load bearing areas. It's strictly for appearance issues, and also it hardes the compromised dry rotted wood, allowing for surface filling, for appearance and water shedding surface, The Wood Hardener dries quickly, and within 2 - 4 hours you can apply bondo, shape for appearance and bearing surface it on the underside next to support joists. I've also used this product in the past to treat minor appearance dry rot on my roof rafter ends, where gutter overflows caused some minor dry rot. Clean out the loose dry rot, treat with hardener, fill with wood filler/bondo, shape, prime and paint. Matches the rest of the painted house. So far after 5 years, no degradation of those treated ends.

I am restoring window sills, after removing all the rot I applied the wood hardener. came back the next day and it was ready for the epoxy everything held awesome. I even put it where there was no right just to protect the wood.

Easy to apply so long as the work area is flat or vertical, overhead application is difficult as it doesn't stay in the brush well - use a small foam pad/brush. Had to use channel locks to open the cap due to the child proof design. It's hard to know now how the waterproof aspect will hold up over time but it did seem to harden the more firm wood in prep for filler. You must remove all dry rot that is loose or crumbled.

can this product be sprayed on to the wood ?

can this product be sprayed on to the wood ?
Posée par: Lonewolf
then this Product will not work for my Application.. the SDS Only says it contains Acetone which I spray all the time using a cheap Airbrush. the wood I need to get to is in a Camper ceiling and it is not possible to brush it on in an inverted position, the Idea here was to use low air pressure and high volume liquid to get it on top of the Paneling that is de laminated with hopes that it soak down as I doubt it will Soak Up. I need to get the Liquid between layers also, IF I laid the Camper on it's side or Upside Down it would not be an issue, unfortunately this is not Practical .... the Camper is a 1976 15 foot Slide in Truck Camper. the only other thought would be to use a Syringe, and I'm also told you cannot do that either. Since I already bought a can, I really have nothing to loose.

Is this for interior use only?

Posée par: John
Wood hardener is for both interior and exterior use. I've used it for both bowls I've turned on the lathe that had some partially rotted wood and on trim on the outside of my house that I then filled with wood putty. Since wood rot is most common on exterior trim or furniture, I expect most is used in exterior applications.

We like how you think! Rust-Oleum Varathane Wood Hardener can be painted or stained after application. So, you can use tung oil on top but we recommend applying to a small test area first to ensure the desired results. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

I have painted exterior trim that is soft from water damage. Is this effective if applied to painted wood, or does the paint need to be sanded or stripped? BTW, the Use and Care Manual download just shows a picture of part of the container. It would be nice to have a users guide or instructions.
Posée par: ER
We applied it over painted/stained wood and it worked just fine.

I could not open with my hand either.....so I cheated and used a pair of slip joint pliers. I did not grip hard enough to bend the cap; did not need to. The teeth grip the cap easily and I had no problem opening the can.

can it be used went the wood is still a little wet
Posée par: Charles
Charles, I always let the wood dry as much as possible. I have not tried it on soaking wet wood, but when I used it on the tops of my fence posts, I can only assume they were not totally dry. Hope that helps!

I want to pour it into a container to dip my paintbrush into. what materials are safe to use as a bowl?
Posée par: Rebecca
I have used a clean plastic container, or a clean glass container. Once done with your project, pour remaining hardener back into can, and make sure you twist the cover to close.
