This product is amazing - so much easier than various "recipes" I've tried to get this look and more natural looking than gray stains. For those having issues with the color, I'm guessing you're using it on pine. Since the product is designed to react with tannins and, as a lighter color wood, pine doesn't have as much tannin concentration, I suggest using a darker wood like oak. If you must use pine try lightly sanding the boards a little bit. Hardware store lumber always seems to have some type of waxy residue on it that may be keeping it from getting into the wood - I've had good luck with the color on both pine and oak projects.

Rated 5 de 5 de par This stuff is great!! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I do a lot of crafts and old furniture projects. This Weathered Wood Accelerator is fantastic! In one hour you can see how the wood will turn out, and apply more if needed. The best turn out for me is to apply with a brush and wipe it off. You get a very lightly weathered look and if you want more just wait an hour and repeat until you get the look you want. I tried a heavy coat on my first piece and it got a little to dark for the look I was going for.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Great on raw cedar! This product is ridiculous!! I dreamed of a weathered barn door to slide and cover an opening into master bath sink area ala Chip & Joanna. Got derailed when I saw how expensive "fake wood" doors are at stores...then figure out how to stain, hang, made it too overwhelming. Then I found this brand new door on fb marketplace made by a local carpenter as side work whoop! 1 coat of this crazy black water and it is perfect after waiting! It was so much fun seeing result change from initial application to 30 mins then an hour and kept changing/improving for a few hours! We will tackle hanging now but videos look pretty easy wish us luck! I have a pic but can't find how to add it)-'

I went to Home Depot with the intent to purchase a variety of gray stains to try to recreate a weathered look on new pine barn doors. I stumbled upon Varathane Weathered Wood Accelerator and put everything else back. The product goes on easily (like painting with water) and then, right before your eyes, the wood starts to change. The color ranges from light to dark grays with some tan/sand colored areas and some tinges of blue. The knots and beauty of the natural wood are enhanced. I waited an hour and added a second coat which further enhanced the look I was striving for. I used a little more than 1/2 quart for the entire project (both sides of the door). Everyone who sees my doors exclaim about how great they look and are surprised I did it myself.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Awful stain. Cost me a furniture sell. I built a custom table for a customer and they wanted a weathered grey look which is exactly what this stain promised. As the other reviews state, the result was an ugly, very patchy bluish purple color. Absolutely horrible. I had to sand it all off and couldn’t remove all of it. After explaining this to my customer they ended up requesting another table be made. So now I’m stuck with a table ($100 in materials) that I’m going to have to try to salvage and sell. This stuff sucks. Don’t ruin your woodworking project. I suggest using Minwax classic grey or make your own stain using vinegar and steel wool.

Rated 2 de 5 de par misleading This stuff does not give the gray color everyone wants, especially with pine. And realistically, most people would want to use this on pine because why stain nicer more expensive boards? I too got the intense blue/lavender hue every review mentioned, however, I corrected it by adding a stain over that I liked. Just a bit of dark walnut or briarsmoke over boards treated with this corrects the weird color and does give it a weathered look. I wiped the stain off immediately for full effect. I think that's how I will use this product to justify the cost- as a basecoat.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Came out great on my maple cabinets!! I'm honestly not sure why all the other peoples' stuff came out so purple. I used a plain paint brush and slapped it on our unfinished maple cabinets. Waited an hour for it to show the full color from one application then added coats until I had the color I wanted. The liquid itself sometimes goes on purple after I've let an unopened can sit for a while but it always ended up being a beautiful gray color in the end. It has MAYBE a hint of a purple undertone but I prefer that over a brown undertoned gray. Very happy with the results. Takes a lot of patience to do a large project and it is VERY messy if you aren't careful. MUST be sealed because it easily streaks and comes off if any water or anything gets on it. I used Varathane soft touch Matte to seal it and it kept it looking velvety with limited sheen.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Purple-ish Color I was very excited to try this out. Prepped the board before hand with the necessary sanding steps, wiped it clean. I put pre stain conditioner waited and brushed some of this stuff I knew instantly it wasn’t work. I figured I’m already in deep might as well continue. Waited two hrs to put a second heavy coat. 8hrs later I got a light purple-ish color which my wood filler didn’t seem to pick up the color so that stands out even more because of the lack of color it absorbs. Not happy very disappointed with this purchase. My expectations where to high.

You can apply as many coats as you want. With each coat, the wood will be darker.

Yes although I would not use this on pressure treated wood. Before putting this on the project I made out of Cypress, I tested it on 3 pieces of wood; 1. 1/2 interior grade plywood 2. 3/4 yellow pine board 3. 2x4 yellow pine After 2 hours, the finish was almost identical to that of the Cypress project.

Do we just apply the weathered wood accelerator and nothing else? I have no clue if we should apply a sealer to it

Posée par: Jt
If you want a rustic, weathered look, then the best look is to use nothing else. But it depends on what you will be using the project for. This product offers NO protection--it merely colors the wood chemically, unlike a stain which colors by absorption and layering of the stain's contents. Results vary GREATLY depending on the type of wood used. ALWAYS, ALWAYS test this product first on a piece of scrap or in an unseen piece of the project! If you need protection, then you'll need a topcoat. I've used a matte luster polyurethane (water based) successfully, however even with the matte finish, you'll still get some degree of reflection off the topcoat once dry, which takes a little bit away from the rustic, weathered, aged look. Good luck! From, IMHO, a woodworker.

Can this be used with a sprayer instead of brushing it on by hand?
Posée par: cp
I have not sprayed this product myself. However, it is so thin I think it would be fine to spray. You may need two coats, though, as the product works well when it seeps into the wood grain. The reaction offer a some variation in coloring depending on the wood and grain, but I wanted more dramatic effects, so I prestained and pre-paintwashed some areas PRIOR to weathering product application. Good luck

I don't represent the company, but I would certainly try if you want to change the color. But you should test it if you want to assure good results.
