This tool can sharpen anything you have, Its heavy and stable. I have tried it on scissors, loppers, hatchets, ax, lawn mower blades, pocket knives, fixed blade knives and kitchen knives. I haven’t found anything yet, it won’t sharpen. The big 22 grit stone is heavy duty and I love the wide surface. Having the wet vat and wet sharpening works great. It runs at the correct speed. I used the guide to sharpen a couple of dull chisels. The leather wheel and compound worked great on a couple of old pocket knives my grandpa had, polished and cleaned them nicely. I have ordered the accessory kit to be able to sharpen more items

Rated 5 de 5 de par [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The WEN grinder comes well-packaged. Be advised that the grinding wheel itself is not attached to the spindle IN THE BOX. So be careful when you remove it from the box to make sure you don't accidentally drop it. I did find the wheel slightly difficult to install on to the spindle. It was a very tight fit and I needed a rubber mallet to gently coach the wheel back to its properly seated position. Read all the directions thoroughly especially regarding the use of water and first time use of the product. There are a lot of good tips included in the owner's manual so be sure to read those also. The only recommendation I would make would be to label the tube containing the honing paste.

Gears made a little noise when I first turned it on, but they quickly worked themselves into shape, and the noise stopped. The guide bar does not sit perfectly square to the stone when left to its own devices. I had to tighten only the left clamp, then press down lightly on the bar until it sighted square to the stone's face, then tighten the right clamp. At some point, I'll just bend the uprights until the bar is square on its own. Machine does a GREAT job of sharpening. Did all of my knives, then moved on to scissors. Next is plane blades and chisels. Should have purchased one of these years ago!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] today I received the WEN 10 in. 2-Direction Water Cooled Wet/Dry Sharpening System. I'm very happy to have a good sharpener. All the years I have had my shop, I don't know why I have not had one. I just took it out of the box set it up and already sharpen my first chisel on it. Works great, the wet stone keeps the tool cool and gives it a great edge. I well be able to dress up all my tools with this. The two direction motor make it mush more useful.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This wet/dry sharpening system works well except for one significant problem. But, first the good: 1) The 220 grit grinding wheel turns at 115 RPM's to eliminate burning of the steel blades and losing the temper of the steel; 2) The water bath keeps the stone and the steel cool as you sharpen and the water carries away the bits of steel removed through the grinding process: 3) This sharpening system comes with tool rest and blade holder that accommodates plane and chisel blades; 4) An angle guide is included to establish the precise angle of the blade; 5) A leather stropping wheel is included in the system; 6) A tube of honing paste is provided; 7) The switch allows reversal of wheel rotation for grinding and honing; 8) Has a carrying handle to allow movement and storage when not using. The problem is that as you are grinding or honing blades on the grinding wheel, it allows water to flow, not drip, but flow, as can be seen in the photo, from the wheel onto your bench which could present a problem as this tool is powered by electricity. This flow of water occurs in both directions of wheel rotation. The source of the problem is the water reservoir that is too small to capture the water coming off of the wheel.

Rated 1 de 5 de par sorry excuse for a whetstone I wasn’t expecting much from a $100 machine, but somehow this machine fell far below even my most minimal expectations. The motor makes a terrible noise that only gets worse when any pressure is applied to the stone during sharpening. The motor is so weak that even the slightest pressure on the blade during sharpening slows the wheel to a halt. The water catchment is a joke and the wheels sends water all over the place as it interacts with the blade. And finally, it took me over an hour to sharpen one chisel. Save your money for your local sharpening wizard and don’t buy this thing!

Rated 1 de 5 de par It seems to me to work properly I have sharpened... It seems to me to work properly I have sharpened a 1/2 a dozen knives ,but the stone came with a very large nick, Luckily I got the stone true up tool, but there seems to be some sort of chemical on the Stone that prevents water from soaking in in some spots and it makes for an inconsistent grind, The machine operates and works very well, my issue is with the stone itself , I am going to try to have them send me a new stone because this one is useless

Rated 1 de 5 de par I regret this purchase First time I used it it was a little out of square, but I expected that. After squaring it worked as intended but here we are 2 months later and it won't even spin up. You can hear an electric hum but that's it. Save up and invest in something better. I regret this purchase.

Well, they “work”, but they won’t do any good because this thing has so many other issues that can’t be solved by better accessories.

This tool looks like a great way to sharpen chisels. But I don't have any use for chisels. I do however own, and use most other cutting instruments. They all need a better, more precise way of sharpening. Is this machine the end all, be all for sharpening axes, hatchets, machetes, kitchen knives, pocket knives, scissors, loppers, hedge scissors etc.? Or is it a mostly chisels kind of tool, yet other things can also be sharpened, with mixed results?
Posée par: Buckwheat
I can sharpen all those. Get the adapter kit for sharpening knives, scissors, and even axes.

Can this be used to sharpen swords and long blades?

Can this be used to sharpen swords and long blades?
Posée par: Guy
Dear Guy, Slow-speed grinding can be effective in reducing blade thickness by small amounts at a time, when done very carefully, as part of an effort to achieve extreme sharpness. Also, judicious grinding is often indicated to repair and recondition worn and damaged cutting edges. We are talking here about knives in general, which mostly apply to long blades also, except that with extreme length, extra care and judgment become increasingly important, commensurate with blade length. I would suggest careful planning and baby steps, at least in the beginning. Moreover, a throwaway blade of similar length and thickness might provide a useful training tool. I should mention that I use grinding to change the shape and character of the cutting edge, to allow more refined sharpening afterward, but I don't use a grinder to actually sharpen the blade, except as a first pass. I generally wear gloves while sharpening knives, especially sharp knives, preferably impregnated with kevlar for added protection, and this goes doubly for swords and such.

How much run out is normal on the grinding wheel? When the grinder is running, if I look straight down at the wheel it wobbles in and out. By this I mean, it travels closer to and then farther away from the side of the grinder, which to me indicates a bent drive shaft. Is it even possible to dress this wheel?
Posée par: MK
Side to side runout may not effect it as much as long as its not coming top to bottom. You could try loosing and removing the wheel check to make sure no degree got caught between the wheel and metal areas it bolts up to. As for dressing the wheel you would need to do it by hand.

Does the water spray around in a messy fashion as the wheel turns?

I have seen many complain about this w wet wheel grinders.
Posée par: Jim2
This depends on the direction of the grinding wheel. With the wheel turning away from you, as recommended for sharpening knives, the water trough is well-behaved, but with the wheel moving in the opposite direction (towards you) some minor splashing will occur. However, the switch is nicely rubberized to keep the electrics dry, so some splashing is tolerable. I, on the other hand, like things nice and dry, so to this end, whenever the wheel is in splash mode (moving towards me), I empty the water trough beforehand, after allowing the wheel to become saturated, and this offers the best of two worlds, with a nice moist wheel that doesn't disseminate unwanted flow, and everything remaining comfortably cool. Please bear in mind that with the wheel turning at 115 RPM, nothing is likely to heat up anyway, even under completely dry conditions. Of course, the water not only cools but helps with cleanliness, too. I want to mention that with the large 10" diameter grinding wheel (x 2" wide) that comes with our Wen Sharpening System, its small motor huffs and puffs to keep the large wheel turning, and any pressure on the wheel, other than very light, will tend to stall the motor, which you don't want to do, so you need to be cognizant of exactly what this machine is designed to do, which is to remove small amounts of metal from a nearly finished cutting surface. Metal removal beyond that should be accomplished with a 2 pole (3600 RPM) or better still, a 4 pole (1800 RPM) grinding machine, in which case I recommend a 10" x 1" diameter white aluminum oxide grinding wheel, nice and soft, offered online for under $25, of excellent quality (I am not allowed to mention the manufacturer of the wheel here). Additionally, such a 1" thick soft wheel might also be suitable (for certain applications) with our Wen Slow-Speed Sharpening System. You will need to fabricate (or buy) an adapter sleeve (good plastic will work) in order to mount such a wheel on the Wen machine. I feel the need to reemphasize that our Wen Slow-Speed Sharpener is an extremely specialized machine, for final stages of blade conditioning, in advance of final sharpening and polishing, hence its slow speed, offered by Home Depot at an extremely competitive price, for craftsmen who employ advanced sharpening techniques, in pursuit of that ultimate edge on tools and knives. I don't expect other workers to operate exactly the way that I do, so use my advice judiciously, with careful consideration of your own specific needs. Good luck. JohnnyBoy
