Aging
Project Overview
Aging is a popular effect that gives walls the illusion of a timeworn, textured finish. Paints are applied using a brush and trowel and then blended with a damp sea sponge. When applying the paint, avoid flattening the trowel but allow it to catch on the surface, depositing the paint. Use small pieces of sea sponge to blend in the corners and along the ceiling and trimwork. This look can range anywhere from subtle aging to a heavily worn finish. Practice right on the wall-the more variation you add to the surface, the more authentic the final result. Choose similar colors for a subtle effect and contrasting colors for more drama. If you end up with more contrasting than you like, simply sponge on a watered-down wash of a dark or light neutral color to help pull the tones together and unify the surface. This effect works well in an entryway, bedroom, dining room or living room.
4 Steps
Step 1
BRUSH ON PAINT
Dip a 4-inch chip brush into the Clove latex paint and brush onto the surface of the wall. Wet the sea sponge and squeeze out any excess water. Blend the Clove point with the damp sponge, using a dubbing motion and feathering the edges. Continue to apply the Clove in selected spots, leaving some areas heavy, and others light. Rinse your sponge occasionally, squeezing out excess water.
Step 2
DIP THE TROWEL INTO THE SECOND PAINT
Dip the edge of a 6-inch plastic trowel into a mini paint tray of Manuscript latex paint. Apply to the wall in long, sweeping motions, reloading your trowel as often as necessary. Vary the direction you apply the paint to give it a random, inconsistent look. Allow the paint on the trowel to catch on the surface of the wall rather than pressing the trowel firmly to the surface. This will give the paint a spotty, weathered appearance. Use the smaller trowels in hard-to-reach areas. Trowel on the Manuscript until you are satisfied with the results.
Step 3
APPLY A THIN WASH OF PAINT OVE THE SURFACE
Mix 4 parts glaze to 1 part Canvasback in a plastic container. Dip a clean, damp sea sponge into the glaze mixture and apply a thin wash of paint over the entire surface. Vary your application by using wiping and dabbing motions. Leave the glaze heavier in some areas and thinner in others. Apply the glaze mixture with the sea sponge until you are satisfied with the results.
Step 4
APPLY PAINT TO SELECT AREAS
Dip a clean 6-inch trowel into the Clove latex paint. Apply it to the wall in the same manner as the Manuscript. Be selective about how much and where you apply it. Emphasize areas that naturally show more aging, such as near the bottom of the walls, next to a window or doorway, or in the corners near the ceiling. Dip the clean, slightly damp sea sponge into the Canvasback and sponge on using a dabbing motion. Apply this coat sparingly. Use this layer to soften the edges of the Clove. Repeat step 4 using Manuscript, apply it only where needed to create more drama or add highlights. Allow to dry and remove any remaining tape. Allow to dry completely.
