Create an Exaggerated Baseboard

Build up your baseboard. It's a decorator trick that's a cinch. With the strategic use of paint and simple moulding, stacked horizontally, you create the illusion of a hefty, high-style trim. Give it a try.

  2. Make a spacer
  3. Cut to size
  4. Attach trim
  5. Fill gaps

Measure

Step 1

Measure

Determine the height above existing baseboard where top of new trim will be placed. Measure the depth of the trim and mark the wall where the bottom edge of the trim will go.

Make a spacer

Cut a block of wood to use as a spacer.

Cut to size

Cut to size

Cut the trim to length and mitre the ends.

Step 4

Attach trim

Using a brad nailer, attach the new trim to the wall.

Fill gaps

Step 5

Fill gaps

Caulk and fill all gaps and cracks along the baseboard and new trim.

Step 6

Mask the wall

Apply painter's tape to the wall along the top edge of the new trim.
