Use a stud finder

Step 1

Use a stud finder

to locate the ceiling joists in the area where you will be installing the canopy.

Using your measurements for the canopy,

Step 2

Using your measurements for the canopy,

map out and chalk the outside dimensions on the ceiling above the bed. Our canopy is designed for a double bed, so the measurements are 65"W x 23-1/2"L - measured out from the wall at the head of the bed.

Measure and cut

Step 3

Measure and cut

2 x 4 SPF (spruce, pine or fir) strapping to fit inside the canopy box and attach the strapping to the ceiling ½" inside the chalk line, using 3" wood screws. The 1/2" spacing will accommodate the thickness of the canopy box. Cut pieces of MDF (medium density fibreboard) for the inside and outside of the canopy box. Our sizes are: 12" x 65" for the outside front shell; two 12 x 23-1/2" for the outside shell sides; 12" x 56" for the inside front shell; two 12" x 19" for the inside shell sides.

Glue and screw the pieces

Step 4

Glue and screw the pieces

together using 1-1/2" wood screws. Countersink holes before screwing to prevent cracking. To strengthen the structure and fit it to the strapping, cut 4" strips of MDF (one upper, one lower) and attach them between the inner and outer shells flush with the bottom and 2" from the top. Use 1- 1/2" wood screws and countersink all holes. Fill all holes and seams and wait to dry, then prime and paint a first coat.

Countersink holes

Step 5

Countersink holes

along the top of the canopy inside and outside the box. Then slide the shell over the strapping and ensuring that it's tight to the ceiling, attach the box using 1-1/2" wood screws.

Use a compound mitre

Step 6

Use a compound mitre

saw to cut upper crown and lower panel moulding to fit, and install with 2" brad nails.

Fill all holes

Step 7

Fill all holes

and seams with latex caulking. When dry, sand lightly and apply two finishing coats of paint.
