The boards were not perfectly straight but for my application, that didn’t matter as they were being cut into small pieces. These boards cut well and did not splinter or split on the table saw. I rounded the edges with a router and then sanded them smooth. I eve pre-drilled holes and countersunk screws in them. They did what I expected them to do and the shoe rack came out looking good.

Lumber that's well formed seems to be rarer and rarer therefore it's nice to see a well shaped board that's true with almost a perfect moisture content. But that's not why I'm writing this. Claymark applies tags to their lumber showing grade, company name and web address. This isn't really unusual because quite a few companies do this. The amazing part of of Claymark's sticker is that it peels off completely and leaves no residue on the board. So in addition to well made lumber they have devised a tag that comes off easily without any of the usual "tag mess". Nice going! I'm a big fan now.

Full of piney goodness. If I was a mama tree I would be proud of this board as my child. They’ve lived up to their full potential.

Remember, almost everybody wants “the best” and pine for whatever your purpose, is no exception. If you can’t find the boards you want, Home Depot is always bringing in new stock (great purchase power) so visit often. Selecting the right pine for the right project is not just luck. You need to understand how the wood is sawn, it’s moisture content and therefore what it is likely to do as it finishes drying... it’s a living thing after all, and it will change as it ages. Consult the web or ask your Home Depot experts for help. I use Home Depot select pine for creating fine heirloom furniture to workbench tops —It’s fairly priced, and the quality is 5-star. And, selection of various dimension stock is most often good to excellent.

I always purchase the "select pine" because of the high quality of the wood. However, until this latest home project I am working on, I never needed to slice each 8 foot length into 12 pieces of 1x2. This time I did and found each of the 8 boards to be 95 inches . This resulted un me getting only 7 pieces of 12 inch material out of each . None of the other "select pine" types I purchased failed to provide me with what I needed. Fortunately, the 8th board was a spare so I was able to complete my project. I had planned to visit with the store manager but I kept getting sidetracked.

So you get to store and see this junk and end up going to pick something different anyways which you were trying not to do. If you are considering buying this product go into the store do not buy online. You have to look at the pieces and really be selective because a lot of them are not straight and have obnoxious curves to them.

I use "select" all the time and it requires no sanding, even where you cut it. But you should use a wood pre-conditioner on it to help the paint or stain to have an even coating.

You probably can use them as stair balusters, they are very good quality with no defects. Bear in mind that there are regulations on stair railings which require a certain spacing of the balusters to prevent a small child from falling through... so you will need to check on that before you design your railing.

It will probably rot eventually. I made planters out of 1x2 furring strips (which are much cheaper) that I ripped into 1x1 which I laced together with light chain and painted them with redwood stain. They lasted longer than the plants.
