Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ridgid R1500 Drill Press Pros & Cons I recently purchased this drill press as an upgrade to my shop. Here's my take: Pros: 1. Ease of assembly 2. Sturdy construction 3. Ease of operation Cons: 1. Packaging was damaged in shipping. However, the drill press was not visibly damaged 2. Missing parts - the switch safety key was missing. Tried to order one from Ridgid but received the wrong part. I had to find the part number from a third party parts vendor and then order it from Ridgid ($1.97 for the part plus $4.00 shipping). Very disappointing customer service. 3. I'm not thrilled with the keyless chuck. It has already tightened itself to the point that I had to use a strap wrench to loosen it. 4. Changing the drill speed is very difficult. There is not enough adjustment to get the first belt off. You have to use a prybar to get the belts off and on. I suppose that the belts will stretch over time. Until then it is struggle.

The speed ratio changes are easy to change. The belt tightener works easy and locks well. The chuck is a bit difficult because it does not center the bit well. I often get a wobble and have to reset it. The crankless chuck is great improvement and does not let the bit slip when drilling in heavy metal. Do not buy the WREN vise that comes up on the Home Depot Webb site as a recommended accessory. It is a complete zero value and a waste of money. I have yet to replace it with a satisfactory product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a lot of Good To Mention Literally the only good thing that you will hear about this drill press is that it was easy to assemble......that’s it. This was my second major Ridgid purchase, the first being the R4512? I believe it was table saw, and don’t even get me started on that hunk of crap straight out of my nightmares. This comes close, but not quite, to topping the cheap skateness of the table saw. Vibration and rattling abounds. Customer Service will not be helpful whatsoever even if the issue is an extremely small one, ESPECIALLY if it’s an issue that causes a total system failure with the machine. Cheap skate tool companies these days know that if they can just get you to bring the tool back to your house the odds of you returning are slim to none because how much of a hassle it was to get it there in the first place. Just look through the reviews on this one tool and see how many people have said, “x was broken but I’m not returning it, just living with it”. This is why over half of the time when you try and call customer service after having freshly bought something and tell them it’s broken, they will refuse to repair or replace anything and instead tell you to haul back over to the store. They know that you most likely won’t want to do it for one, and two even if you do, they think that us peasants are powerless to spread the word of their scum bagginess. Actually they’re kinda right, this is all I can really do to try and stop them from ripping people off left and right, and it really seems like they’re winning. So if you’re reading this, for the love of god don’t buy the drill press. Drill Presses are one of the cheapest “heavy machinery” type tools you can buy for a woodworking shop at least and there are tons of better options on the market. Check out Grizzly they have tons of other options that blow this thing out of the water. It’s up to you though. That’s my two cents.
