The red/maroon parts and the depth stop are the only plastic parts. The unit I received has a bit of wobble, but it's still more accurate than my Harbor Freight drill press. Do not buy this to replace a drill press or for jobs that require precision. This will give you almost 90 degree holes at a decent quality. To get the best quality holes as possible, I had to use clamps to keep the base as steady as possible. Overall, I would recommend this product and would keep it. It's very handy for use in projects where you need to drill 90 degree holes in odd places where a drill press will not work.

I needed to drill holes in a workpiece that was too wide to fit the throat on my drill press. The unit works superbly for the first few holes, then the bearing gave way and the drill cannot be stabilized. These are not built with decent thrust bearings, they are a cheap, standard skate bearing by the looks of it. Beware if you intend to use this for long periods of time. Perhaps drilling only a few holes and then letting the bearing cool will extend its life. That being said, the bearing should be failing within the first 30 holes drilled with the unit.

The concept of the product is great and would have been nice if it had worked properly, but there were a couple things that made me lose confidence and not ultimately use it for what I'd intended, which was to drill bench dog holes in my work top to accomodate cutting sheet goods and assembly of wood projects that require holes to be drilled precisely. Even when lubed, the piece that the drill attaches to wouldn't slide properly on the guides; also with the rubber feet installed the unit was wobbly on a flat surface. I ended up removing them to finish the small amount of work that I did complete. For these reasons, I ended up not using and will look for an alternative solution.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Handy Tool This Milescraft DrillMate Portable Multi-Angle Drill Guide is a pretty handy tool to have around, but there are a few caveats. First, you have to understand up front that this is not a drill press. You can use it as somewhat of a drill press if you're in a pinch but really it's just a guide to keep your holes straight and true. I can't be the only person out there that has a problem with crooked holes, because that leads to your screws and bolts going in crooked and not sitting flush to your workpiece. It's easy enough to insert a bit into this piece and then hook it up to your drill and go. I personally like to use it as a guide when I'm drilling into a wall or a floor and I need to be plumb and level. The caveats are as follows: 1) There is some side to side play when you're pressing down on it, because there's a spring on only one arm. However, if you're slow and careful there's no issue. 2) There is also some ability to twist at the upper end of the arms. Again, be careful and this won't be an issue. 3) The chuck is a 3/8" chuck, so it may not be able to take all of your bits if you're used to using a 1/2" drill. 4) The instructions are not great. During assembly you should install the bottom screws into the position anchors first, then slide them into the frame and screw down the poles onto them. This is not explained well through the provided diagram. 5) When changing angles you have to unscrew both poles and re-tighten them once you achieve your desired angle. This may seem like a lot, but it's really not and the tool is very helpful. I'm glad I purchased it and would do so again. Now, for my cabinet-making, I'll be getting a drill press for the hinge cups.

I was impressed with the idea; maybe it was just my specific unit that didn't work for some reason. The instructions were NOT complete, I had to figure out that you have to twist each rail dozens of times in order to complete the assembly. Once assembled, I could not get the drill mechanism to slide up or down very easily even after lubricating the rails. If I loosened the rails slightly and let them bend to the side, then with effort I could slide the drill assembly down but then it would get stuck and was very difficult to slide back up. Since I couldn't get the mechanism to slide smoothly at all on the rails, I didn't even try to attach my drill. I really wanted this to work, but I'm returning it without being able to even drill one test hole. Sigh...

I purchased the product to drill holes in the 4' x 4' pressure treated posts that I was using for my deck railing. I drilled 2 holes in each of the 16 posts with no problems. I had someone hold the base for added stability while I drilled through the posts as the bolts were offset and the base extended over the edge of the posts. I was able to drill the holes straight. Keep in mind that this will not replace a drill press, so you need to go slowly in larger pieces of wood. It would be nice if a 1/2 inch chuck was available. It is well constructed being mostly comprised of metal parts and it held up fine. I would purchase it again.

I was considering buying this device some time back and ended up buying a drill press instead. However there are still situations where you need to make perfectly vertical hole in something too big or too heavy to be placed on a drill press' table. Accu Drill Mate is what you need in those situations. Solidly and aesthetically made Accu Drill Mate requires some assembly, which takes 3 minutes. It takes drill bits from 1.5 to 10 mm. It is easy to use. Not only it enables you to drill in perfect 90 degree angle but you can also set it for 75, 60 and 45 degrees to the left or right. It also allows you to drill in pipes or cylinders thanks to the cut in the base of it. It is equipped with a stop to prevent you from drilling too deep. Finally it makes lining up the drill with a center of your stock fast and easy. Size of a base, around 4.5 x 6", is a good compromise between stability and ability to fit confined spaces. Overall height is 13.5". Overall very neat device and certainly worth the money. I'm very pleased with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 240 holes in 2 hours! 1/4" Forstner bit with a 1/4" shank. Making a pegboard to hold my wife's sewing spools. My standing drill press doesn't have a throat deep enough, so I went looking - found this delightful tool. For what I asked it to do, it was the perfect tool. Easy assembly. Adjustments to slide stop and angle of drill held throughout the project. The angle adjustment is not infinitely variable - but it is positive. There is slight movement of the assembly (a millimeter or two), but once the bit started there were zero problems. 3/8" chuck makes sense; this is not an industrial tool. I'd probably go 4.5 stars, but a 4 is too low. Thanks!

Can you change the angle anywhere between 90 and 0 or are there only set stops? Say I need 20 degrees, can that be done?
Asked by: Mark
Mark, The Milescraft has presets for 90, 75, 60, and 45 degrees. Beyond 90 degrees you may need to clamp the unit to keep it properly positioned. At 20 degrees you are in the realm of furniture/cabinetry and should be looking at Kreg tools. I needed a shallow-angle jig to connect some 2x lumber on edge at right angles. I was able to make something out of wood that got the job done, but it was a little rough. Spending $20 on the Kreg single-hole unit might have been a better option

What is the maximum travel of this drill stand i.e. how deep can it plunge?
Asked by: kgd
Well, without a bit in it. In the furthest down position, from the Chuck bottom to the ground is 2 1/2" . From the top most position, from the Chuck bottom to the ground is 9". So the stroke length is 6 1/2" . Hope this helps.

How does this attach? I need to drill upside-down into the bottom of a beam. Is this possible?

Asked by: J999b
If you have clamps that will span the depth of the beam, you can clamp the drill guide to it. Or you can also attach the drill guide to the bottom of the beam with screws through the four holes in the base of the guide. The problem is that if you need a precise location for the hole you are going to drill, you will need to carefully locate the screws that hold the drill guide in place, since once you have the base screwed to the bottom of your beam, you can't adjust the location of the hole you will drill. Hope this helps.

Asked by: DocHill
The DrillMate comes with a 3/8" keyed chuck. As long as your bit has 3/8" reduced shank it will fit into the chuck.

How far from the outside edges is the drill center?

I’ll be lining the outside edges up to a 2x12 and would like to know how far in from each side the center will be so I will have an idea of where I’ll be drilling my holes for my 3/4” metal pipes.
Asked by: MetalPipeShelfProject
The base dimension on the short (non-handle) side is 110mm or 4 5/16”. Half of that will be the shortest possible distance from the centerline of the hole to the edge of the 2x12.

Will this accomodate a hammer drill?

Asked by: Orlando
I would never use this way. According to Milescraft it is used to "precision drilling". Hammer drill is a heavy drilling. :o)
