Thank you for your recent inquiry with The Home Depot. Proposition 65, also known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, was enacted by California to address public concern about exposure to toxic chemicals. Under the Act, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (“OEHHA”) publishes a list of chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer or other reproductive harm. Proposition 65 requires that manufacturers and retailers notify Californians of the presence of those listed chemicals in the products they sell in California. OEHHA’s list, numbering almost 1000 substances, contains a wide range of naturally occurring and synthetic chemicals including additives or ingredients used in common household products, food, drugs, dyes, or solvents and chemicals that may also be used in manufacturing and construction, as well as byproducts of chemical processes such as motor vehicle exhaust. Manufacturers, like Hubbell Lighting, are required to provide a clear and reasonable warning of the presence of these chemicals in their products that are sold in California. In order to assure compliance with Proposition 65, Hubbell Lighting has implemented an initiative to mark all Hubbell Lighting products with an appropriate warning label. Electrical products can contain trace amounts of lead or other metals, which are included on the Prop 65 list of substances. Rather than attempting to segregate products destined only for California, many manufacturers such as Hubbell Lighting have chosen to apply the State of California’s required label on all products. For additional information on Proposition 65, visit the State of California’s website at www.oehha.ca.gov. In summary, the addition of this labeling has been implemented to comply with California Proposition 65 and is not due to any Hubbell Lighting change in the materials or manufacturing methods by which our products are produced.
