Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor long-term durability I've owned this product for two years and it's finally kicked the proverbial bucket. It does compost quickly, there are quite a few design flaws. First and foremost is the gear and handle. 1) The plastic clips on the base are not sufficient to hold the handle in place when the composter starts to get heavy, so the handle and gear pops out when trying to rotate the drum. 2) The plastic end cap that holds the drum in place on the gear-side of the unit is not sufficient to hold the weight of the drum, and will eventually break (like mine just did) 3) The base eventually stretches and will not support the drum as it rotates, and the drum will fall out of the base (like mine just did). Eventually it will stretch out so far that the drum will not stay in the base, even when reinstalled. Save your money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great composter! I have the 400 model and have had it for over a year now. This machine makes excellent compost. I put everything in there from kitchen stuff to grass clippings, other yard waste and even dog waste. I noticed for a while that the stuff in the inner drum wasn't necessariy compost for quite a while (seemed dry), but gave it some time, watered it well and before long I had my first batch. Put that stuff right into my garden and my ornamentals are growing like a house on fire. In the beginning I had a few difficulties with getting the right consistency to my compost, but I called Sun-Mar and the staff there were very helpful and gave me a few hints and things have been "rolling" along beautifully since then. Great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Garden composter I have recently purchased the Sun-Mar 400 garden composter. I have never had a composter before and did a a bit of research before selecting this one. I was easy to assemble and appears to be well built (should last for years). I placed it next to our garden and have started filling it with grass clippings and kitchen waste. I'm sure it will likely take a while to figure out how to compost but this unit was definetly a good choice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Composter We just bought it so I don't have a ton of experience with it. The assembly itself is simple but the instructions make it confusing and one of the parts broke when we tried to put it together - they give you a back up though so they must realize that this part is hard to put on. It is easy to use and a basic composting guide is included to help you get started. I used to use a worm composter but seperating the worms from the compost was time consuming esspecially as we started producing more food and garden waste. This seems to be much simplar.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great composter I am glad that Home Depot delivered that big composter to my house as it wouldn't have fitted in my small car. Was very pleased with the speed of the delivery and friendly service. Product is solid and easy to assemble. Can't wait to see the results in a few weeks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Would have gotten 5 stars, but..... The composter itself is well made & so far seems to work well (only have had it about 2 weeks). My only complaint is that the website claims you can assemble it in 5 minutes & it took my husband & I over 2.5 hours. Neither of us are particularly 'handy' but we're both intelligent people (engineer & optician) but the instructions to put it together require a bit of interpretation & were a bit out of order. Now that it is (finally) assembled, we've got it in the backyard & have no complaints. The opening to put your materials in is sufficient & once everything is inside, just close the door & give it a spin. The handle makes it very easy to turn the drum - just be careful - if the load hasn't shifted to the bottom completely the handle tends to spin around until the drum centers itself - I've been whacked by the handle once so learned that from personal experience. Now we're just waiting for some compost. The manual gave a wait time of 6 weeks, but we're just heading into winter now, so I imagine it won't be until 6 weeks after spring arrives that we see the results.

Can we order the Sun-Mar 600 from Home Depot? If not, where can I order one from?

Asked by: Anonymous
Sun-Mar never made the 600 Garden Composter. This was a concept that never made it into production. It is not available at all.

How well does this turn fully loaded?

I worry that this unit will not turn easily once it is actually loaded with compostable materials. Since composting requires humid materials, the weight will be a significant factor.
Asked by: Anonymous
Sun-Mar have taken this into consideration and have designed this product with a handle, shaft and gear assembly. The handle is sturdy and approximately a foot long with an ergonomic grip (built-in swivel) that makes it easy on the hands when turning the drum. A stainless steel shaft connects this to the small gear which gives a gearing ratio of 9 to 1 (e.g. nine turns of the handle rotates the drum one complete revolution). Thus, like peddling a bicycle uphill in a low gear, turning the drum will not be overly difficult even when the drum is heavily loaded with wet compost. Additional consideration should be given to ensure your compost is well balanced with carbon-rich items (i.e. Sun-Mar Compost Magic, peat moss, wood chips, saw dust, dead leaves, chopped straw etc...). Addition of these materials will ensure the right consistency in the drum (not too dense) and make sure the compost can flow through the inner drum correctly. Please see the recommended products for achieving optimal conditions in your Sun-Mar garden composter.

Should this product be placed in the sun or the shade

Sun-Mar 400 Garden composter
Asked by: Anonymous
It does not really matter. In the Sun, however the composter, being a dark colour will warm up rapidly and help to accelerate the composting process. With composting, the hotter it becomes, the faster it works. Of course, in summer months or during times of warmer temperatures exposure to sunlight is not necessary. It is the temperature that is a key factor, not the exposure to light. Other considerations for maximizing your composting speeds are: - H2O or the right moisture content (40-60%) - Carbon content (brown materials like: peat moss, saw dust, wood chips, chopped straw, etc...) - Nitrogen content (green materials like: kitchen scraps, grass clippings, tree trimmings, green leaves, etc...) - Oxygen (turning the drum will aerate the compost) - size of materials (smaller pieces break down faster due to more exposed surface area for the microbes to attack) Please see as well the other recommended Sun-Mar products below that are great for composting.

SUN-MAR 400 or 200 garden composter- how does one empty the compost?

Seems to be from the face and not the bottom of the drum. Isn't this difficult to do?
Asked by: Anonymous
The compost exits the end of the drum. One must unscrew the end-cap (bung) and then rotate the drum. When the inner drum is full of finished compost and the end-cap is removed, some of the material will naturally drop our of the end when the drum is turned. If one wishes to completely empty the inner drum, you may reach in your hand and pull out the soil, or use a garden trowel or hoe to do so. Please view the attached photos. Compost may also be emptied out of the input port (slide opening) if the drum is turned about one third of a revolution from top dead center. This may be done if the composter needs to be emptied in a hurry (if it needs to be moved for instance).

A lot of apples

We have 3 large old Apple trees & plenty of apples that fall on the ground, are wormy ,bruised etc ..Would it be ok to put all of these in along with the other stuff?
Asked by: Anonymous
The apples will compost, but may not feed through the inner drum as per our "autoflow" design unless they are chopped up to some degree. Larger fruit and vegetable pieces must be cut up a bit to expose more surface area (for faster composting) as well as to flow through the system properly. Also, when adding larger amounts of organic material, one should also add something as a "bulking" agent to increase surface area further and up the organic carbon content in the compost pile. A great additive is Sun-Mar Compost Magic bricks see other product recommendations below.

Is there any easy (tidy) way to retrieve the compost "tea"?

Asked by: Anonymous
Generally you won't have excess moisture enough to produce "compost tea" unless you heavily water the composter. The Sun-Mar 400 garden composter has vents/ drains in the bottom of the drum to allow excess liquid to escape (see pictures attached - 3 black circles). Thus, if one wished to harvest compost tea, you would need to place a tray or trough-like container under the unit in line with the drains to catch any potential liquid exiting the drum.

What is difference in model 200 and model 400?

Asked by: Anonymous
The major difference between these two models is capacity: 200 = 200 liters, 400 = 400 liters. The Sun-Mar 200 Garden composter may be rotated manually as it does not get nearly as heavy. The Sun-Mar 400 Garden composter is fitted with a gear-shaft-handle assembly that easily applies more torque to turn the heavier drum. The 200 model is generally recommended for kitchen scraps and small amounts of yard waste. The 400 model is generally recommended for kitchen scraps and larger amounts of yard waste (e.g. someone who has a vegetable garden, or a larger property).
