First time I used it on the wall, I drilled the holes where it said there were studs and it was just drywall. I tried it again. Second time it lit up for 6” across each time and was in completely different spots than the first time (last time I checked, wall studs weren’t 6” wide)...so I did it a 3rd time just to be sure and then it shows studs in a completely different location than the first 2 times. I’ve now used it on the same wall 3 times and still have NO idea where the studs are

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Taking It Back Tomorrow Was intending to buy the "Zircon Stud Sensor HD55 Stud Finder with Bonus Level, Picture Hanging Kit and Carpenters Pencil" for $24 that was on sale but it was sold out. Bought the Zircon HD55 at $34 by itself cuz I felt it was a reliable stud finder from reading the reviews. Brought it home and tried it out a blank wall. First time showed studs to be like 12" thick and on the second pass didn't find any studs at all. I find it too unreliable to use, I'll be taking it back tomorrow.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Stud Sensor to Buy! I bought this stud sensor last week to replace my 30 year old Stanley that was rarely useful. I heard that the technology was supposed to have improved immensely and it sure has! Had no problem going through gyproc with a thick coat of textured plaster over it! Was considering the other models when I bought this one but the cheaper ones didn't have the display, the next one up only added a stud centering option to locate the center instead of the edge, but I'm happier finding the 2 edges of the stud and then calculating the center on my own (then I'm SURE I'm sinking my screw in the center) ... The expensive models add options of tracing live wires and finding pipes in the walls, but this one does all I need it for at 1/3 the price ... and they all use the same technology, so none will sense better then the other.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Inaccurate, unreliable This stud finder is horrible. multiple swipes along my garage wall and i get multiple results. start drilling where this has indicated a stud only to find it's just drywall and no stud behind it. Completely frustrating, time wasting and a joke. I wouldn't recommend this item for anyone, not if you actually want to find studs. I had better luck knocking on the wall with my bare hand then using this thing. This should be taken off the shelves.

Hello. Will this stud finder work on plaster walls put up in the 50s and 60s? They have plaster and metal lath, and are thicker than drywall. thanks.

Hello. Because of the varying density of materials that make up lath and plaster constructed walls, a standard stud sensor tool (such as many of the Zircon StudSensor products) will not work to find studs (this is stated on the packaging).The preferred technique would be to use a Zircon Studsensor that includes a “metal scan” mode such as the HD800. This will allow you to search out and map the nails that hold the horizontal lath pieces to the studs. This way it’s possible to map out the studs accurately. Check out Zircon’s website for detailed instructions on lath and plaster stud finding technique. Thank you.

will it scan through tile & cement board backer

I only used for drywall and to be honest, this machine wasn’t always even finding through drywall. I’d find a better quality one that might specify other surfaces.

Will this work on the ceiling as well?

Hello. Yes. The HD55 will work on the ceiling the same as it does on the walls. Just make sure the tool is parallel to the joist you are scanning for as it would be for studs in the wall. Thank you.

How does it know about wiring behind the wall? Does it make a different sound? How can I tell?

Hello Aliciag. Here is an explanation of the wire warning feature on the HD55. WireWarning® Detection works continuously in StudScan and DeepScan® modes. When live AC voltage is detected, the WireWarning® indicator will appear on the display. If scanning begins over a live AC wire, the WireWarning® indicator will flash continuously. Use extreme caution in these circumstances or whenever live AC is present. If you need more information please contact our tech support through the Zircon website. Thank you.
