I wanted a heavier mulch that would stay in place on a side bed where the chips would seem to drift and disappear so I expect these rubber chips to stay in place much longer. There is a rubber tire smell at first only when opening the bag and once the chips are laid out the smell is gone very quickly. I believe these chips will do the same as the wooden chips and that is to insulate the plants for winter, providing habitat for hibernating insects such as lady bugs, that it will provide good drainage to the soil and also help to retain moisture in the soil in the hot summer months.

After closer inspection there is a bunch of little wires sticking out of some pieces of the mulch! Definitely not safe for kids or pets or anyone for that matter to be walking on! Super disappointed that we have spread about 14 or so of these bags on our property!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best Mulch ever We bought Rubber Mulch in Black from Home Depot begining of last summer. My flower beds were always thick with weeds every year with regular mulch. The gardens were weeded and this Rubber Mulch was put in. This year to my amazement all the mulch was still there not gone like other mulch. Also almost no weed, very few, so worth the money. I would recomment this . The extra price is so worth the money. You save it in one year.

Because of the weight of it, it has good staying power meaning that you only have to replenish it every couple of years. The colour stays relatively good for several years, too (not the 12 years it claims though). It is more expensive than other mulches, but, with how long it lasts, it averages out well.

The heavier mulch stays in place nicely and looks really good. The price is very comparable to wood chips which don't last so long and I find they shift and move to easily. There is a new tire smell at first when opening the packages but once distributed the smell disappears very quickly.
